Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumFor those who keep saying Biden isn't progressive or liberal enough
For those who are saying they won't support Biden if he is the nominee because he is too centrist or not liberal enough, let us remember a few things:
-- 100 years ago women could not vote in our country
-- a few decades ago, African American's had to use a different bathroom and go to different schools
-- just a few short years ago gay marriage wasn't legal in any state. now it is legal nationally
-- just a few short years ago you could go to jail for decades for having a joint, roach, or even a single seed. today most states allow you to use it for medical purposes and more and more are legalizing it completely.
-- just a few short years ago, solar panels cost 10 times the current price, and there was no such thing as an electric vehicle you could actually buy. Today millions of people are saving money with net metering and every car manufacturer has an EV and there are charging stations all over the place.
Personally I am a flaming liberal, aligned with Bernie's ideas more than any other candidate. and heck yeah, if thinking that health care is a right makes me a socialist, then go ahead and put that label on me too.
There are a lot of problems in the country and injustices and some are extremely urgent. But if you step back at the short history of our country, the train is moving slowly but it is moving in the right direction. I know we all want it to move faster. But let's remember all of these things listed above happened, and more, in spite of not having a super liberal socialist in the white house.
Trump did indeed pull the emergency brake on the train and then he pissed in the fuel tank. But if we can just get him out of office and even put a "centrist" in his place, we will be much better off and able to turn the train back in the direction it has been going for the last 100 years.
Bernie? Biden? Liz? I don't care who it is. None are too liberal, too centrist, too anything to come close to getting me to not vote if they are the nominee. We must get rid of trump at all costs.
And remember, it's a slow moving train. if you take a step back, we have pretty much been moving in the right direction, up until 2016.

(42,679 posts)Good ideas he'll get behind. But there's no sense wasting time on things that stand little chance of passing.

(9,932 posts)Trump has been able to push a lot of things through by strong-arming and threatening. If someone like Bernie was in office, he could do the same, depending on the makeup of Congress. We have seen Trump abuse his power to get his legislation passed. that is possible on either side. (i'm not condoning abuse of power. i'm just saying, there is some grey area if you feel you were elected based on an agenda)
yes I do think Biden's pragmatic and I also think that if there was huge support for something he would take that into consideration even if it wasn't his main priority personally.

We need a leader to right the sinking ship, not a revolution to blow the ship up. We need to KNOW who and what the enemy is and how to take back our country from them

(9,932 posts)trump did a lot of damage with the "my way or the highway"
one could say that someone like that on the other side of the aisle is exactly what we need.
one could say that ONLY with someone like that will we get money out of politics and a national health care system.
so again. let me repeat. either one is fine. let's get one of them in office and then we can worry about their demeanor or their tactics later.

One thing people often forget - a president can only be as liberal or progressive as Congress allows, because he or she can only sign what ends up on the president's desk. Give any of our major candidates a solid House and Senate and you'll see serious progress.
