What has happened to this place? When I first started posting here in 2003 I felt like I was to the right of most of the people on here. Jessica Cisneros is the kind of candidate most here would have rooted for. Now people are happy about this DINO staying in office in a blue district where a more progressive candidate could have won?

Hopefully he gets a better, normal centre-left actual Democratic platform-supporting challenger in 2022. Meanwhile, I wager Cuellar will continue to campaign for and fundraise for Rethugs, like he did in 2018 with the detestable Rethug bigot and climate denier John Carter (who unfortunately won against MJ Hegar, who is now running against Cornyn for Senate)

Wed Mar 4, 2020, 01:37 PM
Mar 2020

for starters and who is not anti-LGBTQ and who is not pro-life) can take him out with a smart campaign. Hopefully thsi comes in 2022. If the majority of the federal government somehow was able to implement Cuellar's desires, my marriage (I am lesbian) would never have happened, and if I were to become preggers (via a donor) and found out there were health issues, I could not terminate the pregnancy. Combine that with his his pro gunner, NRA - rated stance, and I can never root for him, as he is in a safe blue district (always Dem since its inception)

I am a very pragmatic young woman, but I do have lines I will not cross. Same goes for Dan Lipinski up in IL-3, who shares most of Cuellars's repugnant views. Marie Newman was hardly some fire-breathing radical democratic socialist.

I think she takes him done this time.

Newman: My family will never forgive Lipinski

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/25/lipinski-newman-illinois-chicago-484736

snip

Newman blamed machine elements in Lipinski’s campaign as the forces behind disparaging text messages — including on St. Patrick’s Day, a major Chicago holiday when early voting was underway — that hurt her campaign among 3rd Congressional District voters.

While Lipinski is known for his mild-mannered demeanor and low-key political style, the 11th-hour texts accused Newman of running an abortion clinic, of wanting to put the Little Sisters of the Poor out of business and of being a Holocaust denier, she said.

“They did do all of those things,” Newman said, pinning the blame on Lipinski’s camp. “Just to be clear, my husband is Jewish, two of my family members are nuns, and my family volunteered for Little Sisters of the Poor, including my mother. My mother was so outraged they made that comment about Little Sisters of the Poor, she literally got sick one night. As far as my family is concerned, they’ll never forgive that comment that Mr. Lipinski put forth on me.”

Challenger Newman sees gain in Lipinski’s pain — third candidate ‘stunned’ by bad blood

https://chicago.suntimes.com/elections/2020/1/22/21077286/challenger-newman-lipinski-pain-third-congressional-district-darwish

snip

Newman told Lipinski “you deserved it,” because of the negative campaign tactics the Chicago Democratic political machine used against her.

“The machine must go,” Newman said. “They torture families. They bully people. And they’re nasty people. The machine must die, and I am a reformer.”

Just three weeks ago, Lipinski joined 206 members of Congress, almost all Republicans, in signing onto a friend of the court brief filed in a Louisiana case seeking to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that ruled that access to abortions is a constitutional right.

Newman said the remark came out of pent-up anger over the nastiness of the campaign, including push-text messages in which she was accused of being anti-Catholic.

“My mom said rosaries for this guy because he was lying so much,” Newman said of Lipinski.

Other text messages accused her of running an abortion clinic and of being a Holocaust denier, Newman said.

“You can see my visible frustration with him. The machine did horrible things on the ground to me and said horrible things to my kids on Election Day. They tortured both of my kids all day long, and I just really had it,” Newman said. “And we will get rid of the machine one way or other.”

He is pro life, anti-LGBTQ, A- rated by the NRA, anti-immigrant, the biggest recipient of private prison cash of all House dems, and close to the top of fossil fuel cash amongst House Dems, he campaigns for and fundraises for Republicans

Cuellar and Lipinski were the only 2 incumbents I wanted to see go, as both are in safe blue seats and they both share repugnant views

Hopefully Marie Newman takes out Lipinski this time, the Lieberman affiliated, partially RW-backed No Labels crowd pumped in 1 million USD at the last moment in 2018, Newman was the only Emily's List backed (she had across the board endorsements for so many organisations and sitting congresspeople) challenger to lose a primary, and Lipinksi's backers sent despicable mailings and texts/emails falsely smearing her as a fucking Holocaust denier and a Catholic basher! Rotten shit.

His views on abortion and guns are also consistent with the values of his constituents. I was raised in south Texas and the culture in that part of the state is definitely conservative. There are no liberal arts universities in the region and Cuellar has an excellent track record on trade issues. When it comes down to it, the constituents of that district feared that they might lose their jobs with Cisneros as their representative.
