"SNIP......
Domenico Montanaro: Before Tuesday, voters younger than 30 were not keeping pace with the overall increase in voter turnout. In fact, young voters share of the electorate went down in three of the first four states compared with 2016.
On Tuesday night, not a single state saw an increase in young voters share of the electorate, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research and sponsored by several of the television networks.
Vox: Its really hard to overstate how bad this is for Sanders. Its not just that his campaign relies on these voters, although it does. Its that a core driving philosophy of his campaign is that he will inspire a political revolution, one led, in particular, by a surge in young voters. Thats how he has envisioned defeating Trump in November. If thats not happening, then how is the Sanders campaign a movement at all?

(40,161 posts)they shuffle off to the next block party. Sanders thought they'd stick around.
That's just the way it is.

(146,189 posts)than voting. Many who show up at Bernie rallies aren't even registered. More don't bother to vote. But, they love to go to rallies, where they meet new people and are able to express their enthusiasm.
Getting that age demographic to do things like register to vote and show up at the polls has always been difficult, throughout the past 50 years and more. I remember trying to get people fired up to vote back in the 1960s. They'd come to a demonstration or protest, but wouldn't fill out their voter registration card. They'd wave a sign, but couldn't be convinced to take the time to vote.
Nothing has changed. It's the existential ennui of being young or something. But, hold a rally, and they'll come. Have a loud raucous protest or demonstration and they'll show up. Hire a band and they'll flock to hear it. Those are parties, see. Social gatherings. Or, today, send them dozens of texts and ask them to like your Instagram page. They'll do that, but they won't stand in line to vote.
Many young people will, but they're not the ones at the political rallies. They're a different group of 18-29 year olds. It was the same when I was an 18-29 year old. I voted. I volunteered in campaigns. The people around me, though, mostly couldn't be bothered, but they'd come to the rallies.

(3,691 posts)The 2020 contests so far has shown that crowd size is not a predictor of success at the ballot box.

(146,189 posts)No matter how large your crowd is, it only represents a small fraction of the people you need to vote for you. Even if you pack 50,000 people into a stadium, the 4 or 5 million people in the metro area around that stadium weren't there.
And, if a lot of the people who come to your rally don't vote, it matters even less. And that's the home truth about political rallies.

(3,131 posts)I agree with the point that building a campaign around young peoples enthusiasm without getting them to vote is problematic.
Its a problem for our party because young people favor progressive policies. I wish I had useful suggestions for motivating young people to vote.
Would some kind of game centered around winning elections and getting policies enacted help? Something like civilization but with a political slant. Maybe you could pick between giving money to rich in return for pac support vs workers for populist support. Revolution if you arent progressive enough.

(118,006 posts)get a ticket and a winner gets picked every 1/2 hour? I know that is not proper as lotteries are a tax on the poor.

(3,131 posts)Hand out a receipt with a scratch off prize.
That was how receipts in china worked some years ago. Taxes were based on a restaurants receipts. If they didnt print one no taxes. So they had a scratch off prize to encourage people to ask for their receipts.
At least thats how it was explained to me when I was there in the mid 00s.
That could encourage people to vote. Good idea.

(118,006 posts)much organization and people often have $1 loonies on them. You get a double roll of numbered tickets. That way you know have many you have sold in each lotto and you just tear off those 'stubbs' from the second roll up to where the first roll has been sold off to make the blind pick of winner. Unfortunately republicans would be attracted too.

(945 posts)Young people don't vote period. There was a thread a few days ago on DU with video of Sanders leading a crowd of his supporters to a polling place after a rally. At that time, I joked that the only way Sanders can get people to vote for him is to take them by hand and lead them to a polling station. Unfortunately, this seems to be true based on the results last night.
I do not know what the solution is. Even with the daily devastation that Trump and his cronies are causing, it seems that the 18-29 age group in particular could care less. If this is not getting them to the polling station I don't know what will

(1,276 posts)since I first started voting in 1975.
My family was always political so was instilled in me from a very young age.
My son, now 26, has been voting in every election since he turned 18. We taught him, from a very young age, as a citizen, the importance of voting.
Way back in 2004, my niece was one of the students who stood on line for over 8+ hours at her tiny college town polling station in Ohio. They made national news the following day. I remember my sister calling her daughter and telling her whatever you do, do not get out of line.
Heres a great story about that day/night.

They understand the stupidity. There are long term foundational realities in this racket. That's why I don't mind ridiculing Rachel Bitecofer and anyone else who thinks they found the new secret weapon.
