Joe Biden campaign says 'Massachusetts sent message' to country after Super Tuesday win

While he visited the state several times since announcing his presidential bid, former Vice President Joe Biden’s decisive Super Tuesday victory in the Bay State came against a popular Massachusetts senator with many boots on the ground, back-to-back rallies held across the commonwealth by the presumed Democratic frontrunner and a billionaire with a sizable operation running a host of canvassing events the last several weekends.

“Our campaign is one for anyone who has been knocked down, counted out or left behind,” Biden spokesperson Emma Riley told MassLive following the win Tuesday night. “Massachusetts sent a message to the rest of the country: this is the campaign that will send Donald Trump packing.”

Biden had touted about 100 endorsements from Massachusetts lawmakers and labor groups, but just days before the primary, many pollsters were expecting a two-way race between Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Multiple polls showed Sanders, coming off wins in Nevada and New Hampshire and a strong showing in Iowa, leading Warren in her home state, potentially delivering a damaging loss to the race’s other progressive candidate. Sanders held rallies in Springfield and Boston over the weekend, drawing thousands of supporters and underscoring his strength in the state.

That Biden won by 7 points against two presumed favorites was a knock-you-off-your-chair unexpected result.
