In 2016 Sanders stubbornly kept campaigning even after ...

even after Clinton had won enough elected primary delegates to lock up the nomination.

Sanders continued to campaign in California and other remaining states until all of the primaries were done.

At the convention, some of his supporters kept complaining about the process and arguing that Sanders should get the nomination, ignoring the fact that Clinton had received far more total primary votes than he had.

I wonder if something similar could happen this time.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

He lost California by 8 points in 2008. Last night he won it by at least that much, it seems.

He also came significantly closer to victory in Texas than he did in 2016, when he lost by over 30 points. Not sure why everyone thought a win there was a given for him.

But I think the expectations for him were higher than they should have been, especially once other candidates dropped out and endorsed Biden. But Obama didn't do as well as many predicted on Super Tuesday and he still went on to win the nomination. OTOH, Obama had certain things going for him that Bernie didn't.

Biden looked dead in the water before Nevada and even there Bernie pounded the field. A lot of vote in California were cast early, before Biden blew everyone's doors off in SC after looking strong in the debate. The voters who had not voted on Super Tuesday had "Fightin Joe Biden" back and he hammered Sanders and the field with votes cast on Super Tuesday. The remaining states have fewer or no early voting days, only Florida starts this week, but Bernie is going to have a hard time here.

She didn't lock up enough elected delegates until California, the last primary. She claimed victory the day before California due to a combination of elected delegates and superdelegates.

I was not happy that he did not do more to clear up the misperception that he won the elected delegates and the superdelegates gave it to her, but she partially brought that on herself by leaking to the AP the day before the California primary that they had enough delegates to get the nomination due to superdelegates. If she had given it one more day and let the process play out - something she herself fought hard for in 2008 - there would not have been that misperception.

The AP declared her the winner. She did not ask the AP to call up every SD to confirm that they were voting for the person who was already the expected nominee at that point. They did that on their own. And I think they did so in order to create the misperception that the SDs played a role in her victory.

Hillary's team was clearly upset by what happened. It is always better to officially go over the top with a victory. And they immediately downplayed the importance of what was reported.

Here is what Robbie Mook said at the time:

"This is an important milestone, but there are six states that are voting Tuesday, with millions of people heading to the polls, and Hillary Clinton is working to earn every vote," Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said in a written statement. "We look forward to Tuesday night, when Hillary Clinton will clinch not only a win in the popular vote, but also the majority of pledged delegates."

https://www.npr.org/2016/06/06/481020591/why-hillary-clinton-will-be-called-the-presumptive-nominee

Here is another good article from the time:

"The A.P., CNN and other outlets repeatedly included cautionary language in reports on Monday night."

https://money.cnn.com/2016/06/06/media/hillary-clinton-presumptive-nominee/index.html

The Clinton team never touted this decision by the AP to call her the presumptive nominee. And it seemed pretty clear at the time that they were surprised and unsettled by it. It ultimately did nothing to help her. It was simply one more way to belittle her candidacy and portray her as somehow having not earned the nomination like other candidates had, but instead had it handed to her by the so-called establishment.

I doubt that his hardest core supporters plan to vote for any democratic nominee but him in the General, last time they voted for Trump or third party or stayed home. His rational supporters will vote for the Democratic Party nominee regardless of whether Bernie runs third party because they understand what is at stake.

Like someone pointed out, it is doubtful that Sanders would run third party.

He may have stayed in for a couple days, but I don’t remember him staying in very long once she had enough delegates.

Now, it was clear for a very long time that Hillary was going to win the number of delegates and he kept going. But once she actually won them, I don’t think he stuck around for very long.

At least that’s how I recall it.
