Just heard Bernie suggest to Rachel that the magical surge in voters will happen in the GE.

It obviously hasn't happened yet in the primary, especially the surge in voting by young voters that Sanders keeps promising.

He got more than a little testy, raising his voice as Rachel brought up the turnout data.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

The surge of young voters has been predicted and counted on for decades and it still hasn't happened. Historically they've voted at approximately half the rate of older voters and this does not seem to be changing. In my state it's so easy to register and vote that they practically drive you to the polls and buy you dinner afterwards but even here it's not happening.

45. Youth turnout doesn't change much except it plummets in midterms
Thu Mar 5, 2020, 03:10 AM
Mar 2020

As you indicated they are half as reliable. Their percentage turnout can shift from cycle to cycle but that is merely proportional to what every other block is doing.

There has been a slight uptick. This is the 18-29 percentage of the presidential vote since 2004:

* 2004...17%
* 2008 ...18%
* 2012---19%
* 2016...19%

In midterms it falls way off. It was 13% in 2018. That's why it was so disastrous and incomparably stupid to nominate Andrew Gillum in Florida under nonsense that the liberal youth vote would carry the day. The 18-29 bracket was 10% in that Florida governors race compared to 39% from 45-64 and 36% at 65 and up.

I follow these numbers, mostly for wagering purposes. I have hundreds of Excel spreadsheets with political numbers. That's why I enjoy laughing at Rachel Bitecofer and anyone who believes they are reinventing the math.

The 2018 mid-terms were a big question mark up until election day, but by most accounts those results exceeded expectations. I sense that 2020 will be an even bigger push, as voters from a wide range of demographics mobilize to end the Trump presidency. Many who opted to sit out 2016 or go third-party will be reconsidering this time around, as it should be clear by now that we no longer have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines every four years until our "perfect" candidate materializes. Bad shit happens in the meantime. If Bernie gets the nod, he will have my full support.
