Democratic Primaries

Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe of Virginia attributed Democratic turnout in the state to deep disgust with the Trump presidency among Democrats and moderate Republicans.
We have to give tremendous credit to Donald Trump, Mr. McAuliffe said. He has been the single biggest driver to the Democratic Party of Virginia. There are a lot of like-minded Republicans who said, I cant vote for Trump but you got to give me somebody who we can vote for. Biden was always at the top of that list.
That was the motivation for Laura Bligh, a 39-year-old personal trainer from Falls Church. She had planned to back Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, but said she changed her mind on Monday and voted for Mr. Biden.
My number one priority is to beat Trump and that seemed like the best chance to do it, Ms. Bligh said while waiting to pick up her daughter outside Shrevewood Elementary in Falls Church on Wednesday afternoon. When there was still a large pool of candidates, minority options still had a chance.
Ms. Bligh said she considered her vote not just a repudiation of Mr. Trump, but an effort to block Mr. Sanders, who she predicted would lose in a bid against the president.

(33,328 posts)I'm going to miss all the fun. My state doesn't hold primaries until May.
That's ok, though. You go ahead and get this thing completely sorted by end of March. I don't want to be getting memos of secret codes and signals during garden planting season.

(2,647 posts)when it comes down to the nut-cuttin', she would probably have lost to trump.
Also knew, in my heart, that Sanders had, or has, no chance against the malignant narcissist, so when the primary came around here in the Red State of Texas, I voted for Biden. And I will vote for him in the General.

(14,565 posts)Hatred doesn't begin to describe it. I saw it among all the guys I've known from Las Vegas since the mid '80s. That sportsbook realm is loaded with guys from around the country who did not attended college. They vote Republican but until Hillary I never saw the level of hatred and animosity and fear they were capable of.
Same dynamic on sports message boards. Those guys would have condemned a socialist but I guarantee they would have gone after Elizabeth Warren with even greater intensity. Without knowing those types personally I don't think it's fully translatable. Hillary and Elizabeth don't grasp it themselves. They did nothing to cause it except seeking positions that so many insecure men don't want them to hold.
Jennifer Strawley is another example. That would be an unknown name here and virtually everywhere. She holds a top position within the University of Miami athletic department and is assigned to oversee the football program. Early last fall Canes fans basically didn't know she existed. Then her name was mentioned by one Canes blogger in negative fashion. All of a sudden the hostility exploded. It was surreal. This middle aged white woman was now hoisted all the root of all evil in Canes athletics, the primary reason for the decline of the football program. I wish I were kidding. The major Canes message boards were holding fundraising drives to fly a banner over the stadium ridiculing her. Strawley's appearance was attacked and everything else.
As that was playing out I kept thinking of politics and the severe uphill climb that women face. There is zero chance it would have played out that way toward Strawley if she were a white male of similar competency level with identical resume and results. I'm reminded of David Brock who emphasized that right wing magazine sales would double in the '90s if a powerful female were mocked on the cover.
