A Not-So-Super Tuesday By Connie Schultz

A Not-So-Super Tuesday

Jessica Valenti, a brilliant feminist writer two decades younger than me, wrote this after Super Tuesday, for Medium:

"Even just supporting Warren has come with an unbearable amount of misogynist condescension. I'm tired of being told that I'm a single-issue voter because I care about a candidate's gender, even if it's not the only thing I care about. I'm over being made to feel as if representation for half the population isn't a necessary and radical political position. I don't appreciate being told that I'm either anti-revolution because I didn't support Bernie Sanders or unrealistic because I won't vote for Joe Biden. I especially resent the theory being bandied about that Warren somehow 'stole' votes from Sanders; it's nonsense."

If you had told me 20 years ago that we'd still be having this conversation about the limitations of women, the only thing I would have allowed you was a running start to get out of my way. Our daughters aren't much younger than Valenti, which might be why these words of hers took my breath away:

"Whoever the nominee is, their campaign is going to have to come to terms with the intense misogyny so many female voters have dealt with — and understand that it's an issue we care deeply about. And their supporters are going to have to let us be sad — depressed, even — that once again we're going to watch a race to leadership between old white men."

We've learned in this election that some progressives aren't quite as progressive as they might claim. The glass ceiling is a least as strong in that lane. Why else would they choose to hire a man with a significantly inferior resume over a more capable and better credentialed woman? Frustrating.

of the Democratic party. While I take issue with that label - I think all of our candidates are progressive - Warren has done a stellar job of presenting her proposals and backing them up. The way she presents herself is positive and compassionate. I can't for the life of me figure out why she hasn't been able to mop the floor with Sanders while at the same time managing a coalition with other candidates (something Sanders wouldn't even want to try to do). Sexism is the only explanation. And in the Sanders campaign there has been a steady, ongoing undercurrent of misogyny. It's discouraging. I'd old and I'll probably never see a woman president.

And I'm getting up there too. Very frustrating and sad to say the least.

She did however, make the mistake of not really taking Sanders on. By backing him up, she gave him the position of power over progressives with a passive hope of getting them to come over to her. She feared the Sanders people would come unhinged, which they did, and Sanders acted as if he appalled by it on Maddow. She basically handed him the playing field because he is so aggressive. That's kinda the fundamental problem with institutional *-isms.

She is so so so smart, so prepared, so energetic she honestly looks 30 years younger than her age.

Her work on behalf of regular consumers was stellar years before she ever thought of running for office.

Yet here we are. One of three old white men will be elected president. Quelle surprise.

I supported Klobuchar until she told us to stand behind Biden. And, of course, we had Gilibrand and Harris, and Gabbard is still on.

Yes, I think that there is some misogyny about Warren and I posted about this earlier.

But Warren at first was going to be the Democratic Sanders. Then she could not out Sanders him. Lately, she no longer was talking about Medicare for all.

No, what turned me off was her determination on who “belonged” in the race. Mulvaney who claimed that Medicare for all may bankrupt hospitals, or who just disagreed with her “revolution” ideas. Later - “wondering” in which primary Biden was.
