(43,318 posts)Martin Luther King Jr.s scorn for white moderates in his Birmingham jail letter
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2018/01/15/martin-luther-king-jr-s-scathing-critique-of-white-moderates-from-the-birmingham-jail/
snip
In Letter From a Birmingham Jail, King offered a scathing critique of white moderates unwilling to do the right thing that still resonates today:
First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negros great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizens Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another mans freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a more convenient season. Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.
To read the whole letter, which is archived at Stanford Universitys Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute, go here. Or you can listen to a recording of King reading the letter here.

(21,783 posts)The candidates endorsed by their vehicles Justice Democrats and Our Revolution, with one or two exceptions, had their asses handed to them in the 2018 primaries.
The Democrats who defeated them, became the vanguard of the Blue Wave, went on to oust their GOP counterparts, and win seats in Congress and other offices were, for the most part moderates, in red or purple districts.
If they're serious about "taking over the Democratic Party", they should actually join their Democratic committees in their own hometowns and work from there as district leaders/precinct captains, etc. Get enough of them at those levels, work their way upward by winning small offices, then big ones, then maybe the DNC will have a place for them at the table.
As it is, their approach to politics and elections is like dumping a truckload of sugar in the ocean and expecting syrup in return. They'd do a lot better by sweetening the cup in their own communities first.

(52 posts)I never see Nina without a scowl on her face. She's either angry or throwing shade. Someone hurt Miss Nina in a bad way. But she's just like Bernie. She can't take criticism. She hates being corrected, even when she's wrong. Nina does nothing for the "come on in it's comfortable here" atmosphere. I feel like we need to start a hashtag #savenina Because she's obviously an unhappy woman.

(1,660 posts)Talk about your own campaign and save the "back-n-forth." Nina needed only 35 seconds before breaking that rule.
Her first mistake was assuming that because Hillary Rosen is presumably White, she does not know anything about MLK and/or his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." He does NOT warn against "Biden Moderates" as Nin put it. Joe Biden was in college at the time the letter was written and about 10 years away from public life, so what the hell was she talking about?
Also, the letter doesn't warn against moderates at all as much as he was warning inaction and labelling. I listened to Nina's tirade and then read "Letter..." AGAIN, and it left me wondering whether NINA had even read it with any comprehension. If at all.

(2,172 posts)Under-reacting to Hillary. I'm amazed at the analysis provided on this page I did not share the opinion that Nina was loud and out of control. If anything, Hillary was louder and totally incorrect in her rendering of Martin L. King's narrative warning that their previous assessment of many Americans' views toward extending civil rights was handicapped by the "moderate" stance that too many in both parties were adopting. Some might call it cowardly. King's letter was written as the Vietnam war raged on and on. If I recall correctly, King was gradually changing some of his views, particularly concerning non-violence. It takes a remarkable person to accomplish what King did. Unfortunately, we don't seem to know how to recognize true heroes today and appear quite incapable of supporting those who demonstrate leadership.

(1,660 posts)MLK DIDN'T warn against "White moderates" or "Biden moderates" (which is what Turner actually said). He warned against inaction--specifically, waiting for the courts to sort out the whole civil rights issue. He was defending non-violent disobedience as a tactic. Rosen was merely pointing out where Turner blew it with her MLK reference. Is she lying because she's White or because you disagree and is trying to turn it into a race/gender issue?
The hell of it all was Turner was about 95% correct with her historical references. The "Biden moderates" thing was a big boo-boo. She also could have referenced another Roosevelt to make her point RE: corporate elites: TEDDY Roosevelt. In fact he may even be a better example than his cousin...
