By keeping bernie from a big delegate haul, he runs up the numbers. Sure, a big win would have better optics, but slow and steady wins when he has southern states he can run the board with.

Right now, it's virtually impossible for bernie to pass joe unless there is a huge shakeup. Bernie has a low ceiling, and he isn't growing his base. The states that are left will either be very close or blowouts for joe. There is no path under current status quo.

Shaekups can happen, but can't be foreseen. Something like a first amendment nut, or a health event, can certainly change the field.

But if another candidate comes back in, bernie might still not have a 50% share, and he wouldn't necessarily be the choice of a brokered convention.
