In Orlando, Jill Biden tells black congregation: ‘It only takes one person to stand up for what is right’

African American voters helped turn Joe Biden’s campaign around in South Carolina and in the South, and on Sunday his wife, Jill Biden, came to Orlando to build on that support going into the Florida Democratic primary.

Jill Biden spoke to the congregations at two majority African American churches in Orlando, the Experience Christian Center and Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, part of a campaign swing through the state that included appearances in Miami and Tampa.

She was introduced at Experience Christian by U.S. Rep. Val Demings, D-Orlando, who has been mentioned as a potential vice-presidential candidate for Biden alongside other prominent African American woman lawmakers. Demings sat between Biden and husband, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, in the first pew.

“Dr. Biden has dedicated her life to fighting for families, military families, fighting for students and fighting for women and girls around the world. … [And] during the time that she was serving as Second Lady of the United States, she was working full time teaching at Virginia Community College," Demings said. "Do you know any other Second Ladies who kept their day jobs?”
