Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumShould Cory Booker be ruled out as veep because he is not a woman?
I think the most important attribute that a veep nominee can have is the perception that he/she can be ready to step in on a moment's notice, especially this time where our nominee will be in his late 70s.
Compared to the others I have seen mentioned here, it seems to me that Booker fits that mold more than anyone. Much of the talk centers around Harris or Abrams as veep, but they are both relatively inexperienced compared to Booker and we don't want to lose a Dem Senator in a state with a Repub governor, so I think that rules out Warren.
The only woman/minority that I have seen mentioned that has an argument for superior experience is Susan Rice, though that experience applies to foreign policy only. I also think that her name recognition would be no where near that of many others.
This is not going to be an easy decision.

Biden needs to pick a strong progress Dem woman to be his VP. It's way past time.

(56,827 posts)While I would prefer a woman and Biden said he would most likely choose a woman, I think Booker would be a good VP - he's very smart and a charismatic speaker.

(1,154 posts)Kamala was my first choice then when she dropped out I went to Booker. I am a woman that would love to see a woman president and definitely would love to see a woman VP. But I think Booker would be an excellent choice. However I think there is significant desire for a woman and especially a woman of color, so I am not sure if Booker is under consideration. I would be happy with him myself.

(6,206 posts)More women are Dems. We need a strong progressive Dem woman as VP. We have never had a woman VP. Our country is behind when it comes to women leaders. Having a woman VP will set the stage for a woman President down the road.

(2,657 posts)It should also be a woman of color. By choosing a woman color, we can ensure that Donald Trump goes on his way. How could this be? Two reasons:
1. In the 2018 Midterms, Democrats had a gender gap of 20 points, women over men. The women came out for us by 20 points. We need to give something back to every woman for that, and we need to make sure that they come out for us again by 20 points in 2020. Women are already hurting because no woman will be President this year. We can show them that we care. We can show them that their voice matters. We must choose a woman VP. That doesn't mean she can't make Cory Booker her VP in a few years.
2. I would recommend that we choose a woman of color for VP. Specifically, I would choose a Black Woman like Kamala Harris. Why? One of the things that killed us in 2020 was that too many Black people did not come out and vote as they did in 2008 and 2012. By putting a Black woman on the ticket, we can help to ensure that Black people will show up because we will be showing African Americans that we have not forgotten them. I recommend Kalama Harris because if Joe Biden picks her, not only will he be picking someone great, but he will be showing all the Democrats that he holds absolutely no grudges--that he wants all of the Democrats to unite and let the battles of the 2020 primary fall behind.
Plus, it is largely due to Black Americans that Joe Biden will be the next President. Joe Biden needs to show them that he realizes that if he wants them to show up not just in 2020, but also in 2024.
Cory Booker is awesome, but in 2020, we need a woman of color to be VP. Cory will get another chance to be President. He's just too good for that not to happen.

(9,863 posts)to nominate a woman as veep. The reasons you give are all good ones, but what if the most qualified women simply don't want it?

(14,176 posts)when compared to Sen Booker TBH. She was the AG of the second largest DOJ in the country and has plenty of executive experience from that--arguably more than Sen Booker has from his time as mayor of Newark, and I say this as someone who has admired Sen Booker since his earliest days as mayor when he was helping shovel sidewalks in Newark and taking necessities to the city's elderly in the wake of snowstorms.
That said, I think Ms Abrams would be the best choice for a number of reasons, including her ability to connect and communicate so effectively with not only African American voters, but also with suburban women. She also has an enviable ability to make progressive politics palatable to skeptics and puts GA in play. With either Sen Harris or Sen Booker, we get no electoral advantage at all.

race a woman should be on the ticketpreferably a woman of color. Booker should get a prominent spot in the admin as the Dem gov. of New Jersey will replace him in the Senate with a Democrat.
