Pivotal New Hampshire primary may come down to Sanders versus Warren

James Oliphant
6 MIN READ

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (Reuters) - Bernie Sanders’ entry into the 2020 presidential race has complicated fellow liberal Elizabeth Warren’s bid for the Democratic nomination, a path that runs straight through New Hampshire.

Sanders, a U.S. senator from neighboring Vermont, retains a strong following in the state where he trounced Hillary Clinton by more than 20 percentage points in the 2016 presidential contest.

An Emerson College opinion poll of New Hampshire voters released on Saturday showed Sanders to be the top choice of respondents with 27 percent of the vote. Warren, a senator from neighboring Massachusetts, was far behind at 9 percent - a worrisome number given many New Hampshire voters are familiar with her.

But as Warren, 69, returned to the early voting state over the weekend for the second time this month, there were signs she could be chipping away at Sanders’ support a year before the New Hampshire primary election.

I think it's likely they'll prevent one another from winning what is a crucial state for each. Garrett78 Feb 2019 #1

She's so much better and much more presidential. I like how she respects the opinions of others and doesn't invade their personal space with rude flailing gesticulations and finger wagging. She's not my first choice, but she's certainly better than any candidate who's dismissive (whoever he, or she may be.)

make for a very strong contrast with BS. He doesn't fare well in the comparison, in my estimation.

Warren just entered a race for President that Sanders has been running for years for. He has never stopped and she has only just begun. Way, way to early yet.

Warren is my Senator. Met her and love what she is doing in the Senate. She is not my first choice for President as I think she can get more done as our Senior Senator from MA. Time will tell.

It's ridiculous to call that unrepresentative state pivotal. It's offensive.

I wish IA and NH didn't kick things off. I think the first several states should be ones that reflect our electorate.

But here we are. And both IA and NH will be pivotal for certain candidates in particular. For instance, I think Iowa is pivotal for Klobuchar. New Hampshire is pivotal for Warren. 2016 demographic data suggests that Sanders is essentially done after NH, but how he does in IA and NH could impact the path forward for other candidates.

And anyone who does really poorly in both IA and NH is likely done.
