Sanders says beating Biden will be 'a very steep road'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Friday that defeating former Vice President Joe Biden in the Democratic presidential primary is going to be “a very steep road.”

The Vermont senator added that the coronavirus pandemic has thrown a curveball at a campaign that was already struggling to catch up after a series of devastating primary losses this month left Sanders more than 300 pledged delegates behind Biden.

"Where do we go from here with the elections that are being delayed, where we can't go out and hold rallies or knock on doors? That's what we're looking at right now," Sanders said in an interview on NPR’s "Morning Edition."

Sanders conceded that "it's going to be a very steep road" to beating Biden, but didn’t appear to show signs of letting up any time soon. Though he has begun adding staff in New York, he hasn’t run adds in any upcoming states since losing the March 17 round of primaries.

Nice to know he has his priorities right.

Geez. Get over yourself Bernie! Time to beat Trump, not Biden. Trump is rallying around this COVID19 pandemic, getting hours of free TV time every day, and is setting himself up to be "the guy that TRIED to get your job back.*" Keeping a zombie campaign animated is not helping. Continuing to convince his base that Joe is the enemy, and not Trump is not helping.

Focus needs to be on keeping Americans alive, and keeping Americans alive means beating Trump, not Joe.

*I firmly believe in the shittiness of the average Trump supporter, and firmly believe that they absolutely would put people in graves if it meant not missing a paycheck. They'll vote for the guy who they think kept their job, even that's the same guy that killed their neighbor's grandma. Their neighbor's grandma is abstract, their bills are tangible. Their bills will beat the neighbors grandma every single time. This is the GOP of "F- you, I got mine!"

"From Bernie’s perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they don’t want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."

"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

for his wing of the party. I had a most unpleasant discussion with a civically-challenged Bernie supporter who did not quite grasp that Democratic primary voters rejected Bernie's platform and style of doing politics. He has moved onto the Naderite position of "Biden better earn my vote" and "greedy rich suburbanites" (his exact characterization, a dogwhistle for kill-the-Boomers) would "rather let Trump win than adopt Bernie's policies." In vain did I try to explain that regardless of his feelings, ballot counter go brrr and the time for holding the party hostage is past. It is much better to join the big tent and bargain to get some of your agenda passed.

Bernie has a large and terrible responsibility in selling out his supporters and stranding them politically on a desert island. He cannot make the votes of his wing of the party not worth the cost. God, we had this discussion 20 years ago with the Ralph Nader people.
