Who have you ruled out?

Last edited Tue Feb 26, 2019, 02:25 PM - Edit history (1)

I know many of us are undecided. With such a stellar field, we are spoilt for choices.

It might be easier to say who we've ruled out for the primaries.

So far, I've ruled out Sanders, Biden, Gabbard and Gillibrand for various reasons.

Who is on your strike out list?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Gilibrand because of Franken and backstabbing the Clinton's. I supported Sanders in 16' but not for 20' because I'm not "Feelin' the Burn" this time around. And Gabbard because her past anti-gay bigotry I can't overlook. I don't buy that's she's put it behind her. Her sucking up to Trump after he "won" doesn't help either.

Biden/Harris

Just saying....

Harris will win California and some other primaries and Biden can take the rest.....Sanders will eventually go away....

But the winning ticket to take on Trump needs to win those states that are still over 50% for Trump and states like Texas and some of the East Coast working class....that's Biden....

Biden has the foreign policy experience and goverment experience that will comfort many that are unsure of Harris but love her....

Anything else is gravy. And his approval is well underwater in all three of those states.

I love Harris, but I have no problem saying Biden might have the easiest path. He's not going to lose any Clinton 2016 states, he's extremely popular in the Midwest and would likely net those three states listed above.

I care more about making sure Trump loses than having my choice of a perfect person. In other words, giving up my dream for a true progressive, because if he gets it again, I don't think we will survive.

Not sure how the most progressive candidates can add much to the ticket at all. We already have all those States that would vote for them. We need to look at maybe 10 states and find two people that could win them.

I know I am not preaching to the choir here, but I'll keep saying it.

That said, in the primary, even if it took a write in, I would most likely cast a protest vote against Gabbard. At the moment she's the only one who stands out, and I doubt she'll be there anyway by the time my state gets to vote. I have some concerns about Kamala Harris and if those pan out to be accurate, I won't vote for her in the primary even if she's the only one still standing; I'll do a write in there too. But still investigating those issues. Right now Sherrod Brown is the only one I feel confident I can vote for in the primary, actually.

But in November, I would vote for a can of roach spray over the GOP.

So she could have 65,000 unique donors to qualify for the debates. As a veteran of a foreign war (Iraq) I really like her foreign policy views and definitely need them in the discussion. If that dissapointed you, fine.

She is exactly right when it comes to regime change wars.

Nope - you do you, and I'll do me.

I DID give money to Kamala because like me - she's a black woman. And - I want her in the Super Tuesday race.

You ID as you do - and ID as I do.

And I hope that doesn't disappoint. That, my donation to Pete (love him! Another Veteran!!!!) , Cory, and Castro. Waiting on Sherrod and Joe to donate to them.

I would be happy if she got the nomination rather than Biden or stop and frisk Bloomberg.

Castro is also moving up my list.

I didn't donate to Tulsi because she is a veteran I donated to her because of her foreign policy views which I'm a bit more passionate about regime change wars because I am a veteran of one. Plus this recent Venezuela push by Trump is reminding me a lot like Iraq. Needing a war to save a bad presidency.

And if he's our nominee, that's something progressives will have to sort out. We've (as a bloc) probably been more protectionist than not, WRT free trade agreements. However, I've howled louder than anyone about Trump's stupid trade policies with our allies, not to mention competitors. If supporting Sherrod, we'll need to learn to distinguish his ideas from trump's scattershot approach.

The people I will definitely not vote for in the CA primary: Sanders, Gabbard, Biden, Gillibrand, Yang

The people I will consider: Harris, Klobucher, Booker, Brown, Hickenlooper (if he runs), Inslee (ditto)

The people I like but don't quite make the upper cut, mostly because IMHO they need more experience on a national level: Castro, O'Rourke, Buttegieg, De Blasio, Bloomberg (he may be a billionaire, but he was elected thrice to run a major city)

Warren moves back and forth between the last two groups: there's nothing I particularly dislike about her, I admire her work for consumer protection, and she seems to be one of the people Trump&Co fear the most, but I'd like someone younger, and she tends to have a Bidenesque ability to stick her foot in her mouth.

Now, if could annex Taiwan we could run Ted Lieu....

I’ve ruled out a few for the primary though, on multiple criteria, but here I will just speak to practical problems they haves a potential Presidential candidates:

Bernie - gaffe machine. Literally cannot stop saying tone deaf things, cannot keep his foot out of his mouth. I supported him in 2016, but he has said too much stupid stuff since the election.

Gillibrand - bland, boring, could put an insomniac to sleep

Gabbard - there is no there there, her record is a contradictory mess. The homophobia too. One can’t just explain away the virulent things she said. She will get torn apart.

We can't afford to damage the gender perception based on back to back defeats. That's why I don't want to nominate a female unless it is a special female who can win. Others are vastly overrated in terms of how they would hold up against Donald Trump.

This is an incredibly unfavorable cycle from a situational standpoint. Incumbents whose party has been in power only one term basically don't lose. That's why I don't want to risk the stigma against females. We already ran a female in a somewhat negative scenario in 2016. The out party generally wins a race like that, after one party has held power for two terms. Now if we follow that up and nominate another female who loses, that will become the theme and the stigma. Nobody will know or care that we tried the Mitt Romney approach of running twice consecutively in the worst situations imaginable. This is back to back exactly what Romney faced in 2008 and 2012 -- trying to hold onto power after 8 years, and then attempting to recapture from that incumbent.

I'll vote for the Democrat in November. This is merely primary talk.

We need Beto to enter. None of our other males has the ideal blueprint.

but 2016 was 2 years ago. In that time I've learned many things. 1. Hillary Clinton supporters want the same exact world I want to live in. 2. I have the same moral values that Hillary Clinton supporters have. And 3. I share the same exact beliefs about Republicans and Donald Trump (vile excrement).

There is only one thing we all need to agree on and demand and I guarantee you we could all agree on one candidate. Policy substance.

This does go back to 2016 but it's a realization I had because of it. Every person, including Donald Trump deplorables want a couple of the same things:

(Percentage of Americans overall)

Get money out of politics and end citizens united. (75%)

We overwhelmingly want to tax the rich. Ask any average person if they think the rich are being taxed too heavily and they will 100% say they don't pay enough.

We overwhelmingly want universal background checks on gun sales (97%!)

We overwhelmingly want some form of universal healthcare (70%)

We overwhelmingly want to raise the minimum wage to a living wage (a smaller percentage, yet still the majority, wants it to rise with inflation)

We overwhelmingly want immigration reform (not the Trump kind, the humane kind that fixes the problems)

And we want to revitalize our education system including more funding for students, smaller student to teacher ratios, and tuition free college.

I'm not harping on any single candidate because literally any of them could pick up the mantle with these policies and win so hard our faces would melt. So my long winded answer to your short question, is I'm not ruling anyone out if they do this ^^^

Gabbard because she's got the support of the Russians.

Sanders because he's too old, other people like Elizabeth Warren are saying the same things that he did, and I'm still pissed at his fanboys (and girls) going to vote for Jill Stein.

By far my number one choice will probably never run (or at least not this time), Michelle Obama. I think she would crush Trump and be a superb POTUS.

Still waiting to see all who get in the race. The first debates are in only 4 months or so, so they better hop in fast.

I really like Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Sherrod Brown (big problem as we will lose a Senate seat though). I love Elizabeth Warren but we would again lose a Senate seat, and she has damaged herself with this this Native American shite. Also I like Julian Castro and need to see more of Beto's actual policy stances if he runs.

Stacey Abrams would make a great VP depending on who was a the top of the ticket.

I looked at Sanders seriously before he caused me to rule him out for life. Gabbard's candidacy is a silly joke, of course, never in consideration for a moment. But imo both are untrustworthy, erratically unreliable, and appallingly incompetent for high office.

Gillebrand's conservatism meant she never had a chance for consideration. She pretends to have been reborn as a liberal, but she let her mask slip badly when she introduced a bill that would imprison people (for decades!) for boycotting Israel for political reasons. She doesn't get liberal principles, and I'd never want to find out what she'd be willing to do to the rest of the Bill of Rights.
