Housing and Immigration are related.

Americans view housing not as a commodity, but as an investment. Given that, housing crises will naturally occur since the best way to protect the value of an asset is through scarcity.

This creates a problem. Given that the majority of jobs do not (and will not ever) allow younger generations to save up and buy houses, they will delay family creation (or eschew family creation altogether) until they're qualified for better paying jobs in order to afford housing.

This creates an additional problem. Stalling family formation means less young people who could take on lower paying jobs. The people who work at Starbucks, take your tickets at the movie theaters, clean the bathrooms at your gym, take care of your kids while you work, take care of your elderly parents while you work, stock the shelves in your grocery store, work as cashiers at your grocery store, etc., all of these people need a place to live. They do not manifest out of the ether. They all need shelter. Shelter, as stated earlier, is deliberately made scarce over time in order to inflate their investment value.

(Quick side note: No. AI and Robots are still decades away from replacing service workers at scale.)

What's needed is a population of people willing to live in sub-standard housing and work these service sector jobs. Enter undocumented workers and migrants. They're willing to clean the toilets at your favorite restaurant bc our level of poverty here in the U.S. offers a higher standard of living than their level of poverty.

So, if you want the only way to prevent this would be to give dignity to service work by building more quality housing for them. We have to get rid of this notion that housing needs to always be scarce and build more housing so that all workers can live in dignity.

Otherwise, shut up about migrants and undocumented workers.

Trump understands and uses his class privileges.

Trump is not smart, cunning, nor intelligent. He learned as a child that rich people have privileges that most people are not aware of. For example, our legal systems, both criminal and civil, can easily be manipulated by the wealthy. Judges are appointed by the rich. Trials are delayed bc the rich can afford to keep paying legal fees to stall and delay. And when every avenue is exhausted, they simply plea out to a lesser charge or a stiff fine which is a small percentage of their net worth.

The Republican party, including the establishment, supports Trump largely bc he protects their class privileges from those pesky Democrats. He protects their wealth from taxes. He protects their businesses from regulations. He puts corporate friendly judges in the federal judiciary. Sure, he's uncouth, an idiot, unstable, in the tank for Putin, and totally unfit for office, but they do not care. Their taxes will go down and the government won't generate enough tax revenue to keep up with the crushing deficit. And, a growing deficit gives them the perfect argument to gut SS, Medicare, and Educational programs.

Trump is the ultimate class warrior. He projects himself to be a "man of the people" while all along he's doing the bidding of the elite.

Lord, grant me the confidence and faith of my fellow NYers who walk out into intersections looking at their phones

instead of the traffic in both directions. Yes, they may have the light, but still relying on NYC drivers to obey traffic laws requires a faith that I simply do not have.

President Biden's SOTU speech tonight put the power of incumbency on full display.

For all of the nervous nelly, worry wart pundits, tonight showed why it's politically dumb to give up the huge advantage of the incumbency. Biden is now, and has always been, the Democrats' best chance of winning the White House. No other Democratic candidate can deliver a speech in primetime for an hour and have it covered by all of the news networks.
