The Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason or "ASSLaw" or "ASSoL"

(This is an old story, but it's still funny as hell.)

Last week, officials at George Mason announced they were changing the name of the law school to “Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason.” The internet, as a collective whole, immediately seized upon the new acronym and called the school “ASSLaw” or “ASSoL,” depending on your view about the use of the word “of” in acronyms.

Neoliberalism - the ideology at the root of all our problems

The ideology that dominates our lives has, for most of us, no name. Mention it in conversation and you’ll be rewarded with a shrug. Even if your listeners have heard the term before, they will struggle to define it. Neoliberalism: do you know what it is?

Its anonymity is both a symptom and cause of its power. It has played a major role in a remarkable variety of crises: the financial meltdown of 2007‑8, the offshoring of wealth and power, of which the Panama Papers offer us merely a glimpse, the slow collapse of public health and education, resurgent child poverty, the epidemic of loneliness, the collapse of ecosystems, the rise of Donald Trump. But we respond to these crises as if they emerge in isolation, apparently unaware that they have all been either catalysed or exacerbated by the same coherent philosophy; a philosophy that has – or had – a name. What greater power can there be than to operate namelessly?

Neoliberalism is anti-human and anti-civilization. It's at the heart of everything that's wrong in our country. The Biden administration and the Democratic party are moving away from it which is one of the reasons why the Fed is jacking up interest rates. They want economic pain in order to get Democrats voted out.

Coincidentally, there's another thread about the CBO report on income inequality. This is the end result of neo-liberalism:

The Demographic Drought - Baby Boomers are Retiring in record numbers

The Baby Boomer retirement wave is what's driving the labor shortages. This was happening before Covid. My theory is that the Fed is deliberately trying to destroy asset values (401Ks, housing, etc.) in order to push boomers back into the labor force.

Just watched, "RRR", an Indian movie.

It's a wild, crazy, long experience, but it was a great watch. Truly enjoyed it.

Please check it out if you have Netflix.

The Club for Growth? More like The Club for Billionaires. The capitalist class is fine with Fascism.

Most sane people see the current Republican as a major threat to our democracy. Republicans are willing to throw out the constitution for their Cheetos-hued god.

Yet, the capitalist class seems entirely comfortable with American fascism so long as they can get their tax cuts.

The Club for Growth has spent $47 million this campaign season on MAGA Republicans with most of that money coming from just 7 billionaires.

The Fed's rate hike strategy gives the Republicans a huge advantage for 2024.

The Fed is looking to raise interest rates up to 5% next year. The last time it was that high was in 2008 which triggered the housing collapse and brought about the Great Recession.

If there is a repeat, then that gives the Republicans a huge advantage in 2024. Trump, DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Josh Hawley, etc. will all benefit politically from a moribund economy.

Today's Fed decision is bad news for the future of this country.
