Oh man! Thanks!

I may just make a note about that and keep it!

I am SO DAMN TIRED of the religionistas of America trying to jam their cultism down our throats!

Love these cartoons. Sometimes the cartoonists can make a sharper, clearer point with a pen than the baddest bad guy can with a gun.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I am TOO!!!! EVERYBODY's getting a smack down in Indiana.

Frankly, boston bean, I think this is EXACTLY what we pro-choicers need to do, too. I haven't heard ANYONE connect the dots as far as should be done.

CONSIDER (And this has already happened):

With a law like this in place, it's not just gay couples who'd get turned away from a restaurant or a flower shop when they're planning a wedding.

It's women trying to get a prescription filled for the Pill. We've already seen the stories and the foolishness of the pharmacists who say their consciences can't fill such a prescription. It's against their religion. Can't bring themselves to just do their jobs and leave their politics OUT OF IT. They have to meddle in our personal lives, all the way into our bedrooms!

THIS is a golden opportunity to help others connect those dots, and demonstrate that this involves LOTS of different rights that the religionistas don't like and want to take away. Some of these, they've ALWAYS wanted to take away, and many of those involve women. I have actually heard a few people on the radio who state flat-out that the problems really began in our society when women gained the right to vote. More recently, astoundingly enough, there was even a female legislator somewhere in the South, I forget where, who stated rather oddly that she thought women shouldn't have the right to vote! That would include her, too, presumably - IF what she said she wanted ever turns out to BE what she wanted. I would not be surprised to hear some rhapsodizing about how soon they might be able to legislate their right to order us to wear chastity belts. Women would be next. In many cases before the Medievalists among us target that other voting block they want to keep controlled: Blacks and Latinos. Mainly because the air seems to have been let out of the balloon for women's rights. Certainly women's reproductive rights. We have to reinflate that balloon. OR bring in our own Goodyear blimp!!!!!

Where else do you imagine that side of the aisle will try to get away with applying this law next? How far do you think they'll be tempted to stretch it? Especially empowered and undoubtedly emboldened by what mike pence did, and how their darling ted cruz just stepped up to voice support? Think of all the people they don't like. Religiously and otherwise - but you can find ways to stretch religion over all these excuses too, if you're really clever and manipulative. And I wouldn't put it past this particular opposition.

We need to understand something. Our gay friends and brothers and sisters need to understand this. We women need to understand this. Our friends and brothers and sisters in other targeted skin-color groups need to understand this. We need to understand the opposition and take it VERY seriously. They're fired up for their idea of God. They think they have God on their side. So they're NOT going to let up OR accept retreat.

As though we were dealing with our own domestic ISIS.

It's ALL ABOUT "MY religion trumps YOUR rights."

That seems to be IT. The crux of it.

I personally would love to see the right to choose being factored in here, and added to the list of reasons why this is such a horribly bad and intolerable law.

The same legalized discrimination that would allow a granny in a flower shop to deny a gay couple her services to create flower arrangements for their wedding could, and I strongly believe WOULD, be used to deny a woman going to a fundie pharmacist the right to have her contraception prescription filled, if the pharmacist whined that it was against his religion.

And knowing the opposition we face on this - I wouldn't put it past ANY of 'em to try to figure out a way to weasel out of having to serve ANYBODY they thought was against their religion. Remember - these folks paint with an extraordinarily broad brush. Because it's their religion and they seem to be given over to paranoia about always being persecuted, I would EXPECT them to use ANYTHING they thought might work for their cause to get their way, and further ghettoize and victimize people they didn't agree with. Muslims? Hey, it's against MY religion to serve those who serve "that false god..." What about a Jewish person doing that to a Christian - OR a Christian doing that to a Jewish person? So far, that's exactly what they're entitled to do.

WE as women and as progressives/liberals/left-of-centers NEED to start lumping the perils facing the right to choose in with this, because it WILL be affected. And we need to start chipping away at that ongoing attack on Roe v Wade. Otherwise we're gonna lose it. Roe v Wade is ON THE ROPES - NOW.

Got a passive-aggressive one: give 'em a fake phone number.

I got stuck next to one on a plane once. SHEEEEEEEEEE-IT!!!! I hope THAT never happens to you!!!!!

This was a LONG time ago. He got into a conversation with me. No matter what I said - including - HEY, I'm ALREADY saved! We believe in the SAME Guy! I was baptized Catholic at the ripe old age of two-WEEKS!" That wasn't enough. It was HIS particular "Christian" cult that he insisted I embrace. He would not stop. Finally, I decided that he wouldn't be able to tell if I was lying, so I lied to him. I "gave in." I realized nothing else was gonna shut him up. That actually did work. We held hands and said a prayer - his. I went along with it. I tried to stay pleasant. I thought it would be better to let him think he'd scored another win - and it did seem to work out that way. And he left me alone after that. Except at the end of the flight, he asked for my phone number so we could "continue the conversation." I lied again. "Yeah, sure. This was great." And I gave him a number I made up. I made up a last name, too. Smiled and thanked him, and got the hell off the plane, disappeared into a crowd, and outta that terminal as soon as I could.

Sometimes you have to be a stealth fighter.

DUer closeupready just came up with an observation that's FUCKING BRILLIANT:

"...smaller, medieval societies."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=6437334

That's EXACTLY what they are. MEDIEVAL in their thinking. MEDIEVAL in where they really want to take this country. BACK in time to THOSE MEDIEVAL times - when only wealthy white male landowners had any say, and were the only ones who counted.

Women, minorities, the poor - and certainly gays then and now - were all second-class and not even "citizens." Didn't matter. Didn't count. And had no voice. Just there to be used by members the ruling class for the betterment of the ruling class. Hmmmm... MAN does THAT sound familiar. 'Eh, 1%?

March 30, 2015

closeupready, YOU have just given us a FABULOUS new framing! A new meme!

And it just happens to be BRUTALLY true: "medieval societies like Indiana's" !!!!!!!!!!!!

"MEDIEVAL SOCIETIES"!!! Good HEAVENS, that's brilliant!!! That's EXACTLY what they are. It just nails it! Just totally sums it up. That IS what they are. And it's a SUPERB way to word it.

They ARE a Medieval society. Their thinking is just that: Medieval. What they want is the kind of thing that the Middle Ages were famous for! "Medieval societies." This is what the extreme "right" wants. THAT value system. And remember something else about it: VERY often, the big money was in the church. The church hierarchy, the bishops and certainly the popes - all had power beyond imagining! The very rich were closely linked to the church and usually one or more of their sons were in the priesthood (or higher ranking). THAT was where most of the power and money and influence was.

The Medieval era was really lovely for the rest of the population...
When women were seen and not heard and were only there to produce heirs, and had no say.
When blacks were slaves, and had no say.
When the poor were ignored, and had no say.
When the serfs worked for the local lord and were grateful for their crumbs - and it wasn't their land anyway, which meant their lord got all the profits AND the edibles that were grown thereon - AND they had no say.

Well, the problem there is that THE REST OF US, factually A MAJORITY IN THIS COUNTRY - realize they/we live in the 21st Century. Women certainly do - at least judging from the women I've read, heard, seen, and talked with. That's one of the first things they say when the right to choose comes up for discussion. It's the same thing we're hearing about this:

"I thought this was already settled!"

"I mean - this is the 21st Century for Pete's sake!!!!!"

"Didn't we already have this discussion/fight this battle/win this battle?"

"Why are we STILL fighting this?"

Oh, and by the way, just to be further annoying, let me just stress again - THIS SHIT is what happens when Democrats stay home on Election Day. INDIANA is what you get. The Indiana legislature, the governor, and nauseating perversions of "law" are what you get. IT'S WHAT YOU GET. For yourself and unfortunately also, for all the rest of us - including those of who did care enough to go vote.

March 30, 2015

Actually, I do marvel at the power of the dollar. It's gonna be the BUSINESS community in Indiana

that puts this bill in its well-deserved grave. Remember when dubya said "Money trumps peace"? Well, take a lesson. Money does trump peace. Money trumps EVERYTHING.

THIS is what happens when Democrats stay home on Election Day.

March 30, 2015

I think we need additional buttons.

Indiana/Hobby Lobby is what happens WHEN DEMOCRATS STAY HOME.

Honesly, people. WE have the numbers. There are MORE Dems than there are GOPers. And judging from the changing demographics, it's gonna increase that way, too. When WE turn out to vote, WE WIN. The numbers are on OUR side. The CONservatives aren't, but the NUMBERS are. Just think DEMographics. Funny, I just realized both DEMocrat and DEMographics start with a D. Take a lesson from that!!!

Imagine, if you will, a President pence. Disgusting thought, isn't it? THAT side of Indiana gone national, officially sanctioned. With the full force of the White House behind it. Want that? Then stay home in November 2016 (if you wanted somebody other than Hillary - or WHATEVER). I guarantee you, you may not have liked the Democratic candidate, BUT YOU'RE GONNA HATE the republi-CON PRESIDENT. GUARANTEED. ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED. Study Indiana if you don't want to hear it from calimary. Look what THEY got. Dems stayed home, Dems stayed silent. Dems presumed it was no use, so they threw the game before the game started. When they could have influenced the election there. Maybe mike pence wouldn't have gotten where he is now.

And okay, you say maybe the Demographics actually aren't there in Indiana? Okay, maybe we lose Indiana for awhile. But there are OTHER states where the margin ISN'T so lopsided. And Dems may stay home then, too. Which gives the minority republi-CON voting block a leg up. I think I'm gonna start writing the word "Demographics" with a capital "D" just to further underscore that point. The NUMBERS are with US!!!!!!

Guys, DU Brothers and Sisters, PLEASE!!!!!! DO NOT STAY HOME AND POUT ON ELECTION DAY!!!!! DO NOT STAY HOME AND GIVE UP BECAUSE YOU THINK IT'S NO USE!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!! Get out there and VOTE!!!!

And think of this, too: If you stay home because you didn't like the choice for President, then you also screw all the down-ticket races too. You won't like who you get for Lt. Governor. You won't like who you're stuck with for State Treasurer. You're not gonna like who you get stuck with for state Attorney General. And You're REALLY gonna hate who you get stuck with for Secretary of State - they're the Katherine Harrises (Florida 2000) and Kenneth Blackwells (Ohio 2004) and others - likes Kris Kobach in Kansas - who's been the instigator of a TON of this shit, especially voter suppression. And you'll throw all the ballot measures to the bad guys and THEIR voters. And believe it - THEIR voters WON'T stay home.

About calimary

Female. Retired. Wife-Mom-Grandma. Approx. 30 years in broadcasting, at least 20 of those in news biz. Taurus. Loves chocolate - preferably without nuts or cocoanut. Animal lover. Rock-hound from pre-school age. Proud Democrat for life. Ardent environmentalist and pro-choicer. Hoping to use my skills set for the greater good. Still married to the same guy for 40+ years. Probably because he's a proud Democrat, too. Penmanship absolutely stinks, so I'm glad I'm a fast typist! I will always love Hillary and she will always be my President.
