Welcome to DU, Lamonte!

Glad you're here. "Does anyone think there is protection from this in the new law?" NOPE. Well, not reasonable, reality-based thinkers anyway. But these folks in their lovely little bubble just think they're getting the government off their own backs. And that's a goooooood thing. Especially when it forces the government into the lives and hearts of everybody else.

BELIEVE IT. This law would give ANYBODY who doesn't like something to use their religion to justify anti-social, cruel, exclusionary, or hurtful behavior. DISCRIMINATORY behavior. Look at Hobby Lobby - and women's access to health care! That's not a gay thing. That's a misogynist thing. And you better believe that some out there might try to apply it to blacks, to the poor, to ANYBODY. They WILL try to use this to impose their narrow views on everybody else. "MY religion trumps YOUR rights." This has become an epidemic. I hope the whole "Indiana experiment" here starts to turn the tide on that one. Because this shit needs to stop!!!!

THIS ^^^^^^^

AMAZING point made by Barney Frank - the republi-CONS vote. The Democrats march.

INDEED: "Get out of the street into the voting booth!" They smirk and sneer, and laugh at us and roll their eyeballs when we march. When we VOTE, we wipe that smirk off their smug faces. Sometimes we even sand-blast it off.

These ALL hit the mark!

As cartoonists usually do! It delights me that this lame-brained idea has turned into such a shit storm for them. Rude awakening, 'eh? Their comfy little private insular world just smacked them in the face like a big cream pie. Or in this case, maybe, more like a cow pie.

Thanks, n2doc!

That last sentence is KEY. And it's what you see playing out in Indiana now.

"Every once in a while, they need to be confronted with the concept that not everyone agrees with them."

They live in a bubble. They really do. Indiana is proof. Trying to shut out the "cold cruel world" and live in their own safe little insular world where only what THEY WANT TO BE TRUE is true. Pox Noise has helped build and reinforce this. Hate radio does nothing BUT reinforce this AROUND THE CLOCK, 24/7/365. kkkarl rove kicked it into high gear early in bush/cheney by rhapsodizing about how "we create OUR OWN REALITY. And you will study it, judiciously, as you will (his imperiousness said, dismissively). The denial is AMAZING to me!

Here's the quote of the century, if you'll recall:

The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. "That's not the way the world really works anymore." He continued "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

"...Judiciously, as you will..." That smug put-down has stung me and pissed me off from the first time I heard it.

Saving this for later savoring.

His political leanings are what keep him in a bubble.

His myopic, close-minded agenda is what keeps him in a bubble.

His pinched world-view of religion imposed on everyone whether they want it or not is what keeps him in a bubble.

His CONservative outlook and everything that feeds it is what keeps him in a bubble.

I suspect the OP nailed - probably ALL he watches is Pox Noise and ALL he listens to is hate-radio and people of like mind. I'd guess he doesn't spend much time talking to or getting to know or trying to understand any other points of view than those he considers "right" or what his version of God tells him to do. So it's no surprise he would be bewildered by the reaction this damn-fool move of his has earned him. "But... but... but... I thought everybody agreed this was a great (noble, God-sanctioned, loyal American) idea! HOW could this POSSIBLY happen???????"

It happens, pal, when you completely disavow, disregard, dismiss, and demonize the other side - which, numerically, substantially out-numbers you and yours from coast to coast.

She's Done It AGAIN!

Great work, as usual, my friend! GREAT work.

I can't help but be struck by that first one, which I've seen before, here. The one with "We've Already Had This Conversation."

DAYUM but we have! This is and already was settled law. Just like Roe v Wade. But you'd never know it from the objectors out there, and the strange, distorted, myopic, greedy, sociopathic, dictatorial, and entirely discriminatory path they're on.

March 29, 2015

Exactly. That's because they've been so successful at it up until recently.

That's because, FOR YEARS, they've been able to reframe things and focus-test terminology and memes and slogans and bumper-stickers, tailored to capturing something subliminal within the short-attention-span electorate. These are cheap-ass tactics that more often than not actually spell out the OPPOSITE meaning of what the actual words suggest.

"Pro-life." (Oh yeah? You're the ones who shoot doctors, harass and threaten women, and try to cut the social safety net that's often the ONLY life support available to the struggling - and maybe she was raped - mother of another unwanted child.)
"Right to work." (Oh yeah? You really mean "right to work FOR LESS," screw the workers, no rights, no restrictions on how much of a living wage the boss can take away from you.)
"Sanctity of marriage." (Oh yeah? I guess only if you're a heterosexual male with a heterosexual fiancee. Marriage isn't permitted for all you perverts out there.)
"Religious freedom." (Oh yeah? WHAT freedom? You want to dictate. You want to shove one specific kind of cultish "Christianist" belief system on the rest of us - to whom you need to DENY true religious freedom.)
"Free market." (Oh yeah? FREE market? You sing about capitalism and the joy of competition, which to you means run the rest of the competition outta business, or buy them out, or take them over, so you can corner the market, and screw anybody you want so YOU can grab a little more money for your own bottom line, the rest of us - we taxpayers who helped fund all aspects of the physical and social infrastructure on which YOU operate ad profit - be damned.)
"Big tent." (Oh yeah? WHERE? You mean the one where only older wealthy white men are allowed to preside, while gays, blacks, Latinos, the poor, the struggling middle class, and other religious belief systems are not welcome, really not allowed inside even though we pay them lip-service, and women and younger voters are told to stand in the back of the room and be quiet - because it's the rich white geezers who KNOW what you need.)

There's a slew of 'em. These are just the ones off the top of my head.

About calimary

Female. Retired. Wife-Mom-Grandma. Approx. 30 years in broadcasting, at least 20 of those in news biz. Taurus. Loves chocolate - preferably without nuts or cocoanut. Animal lover. Rock-hound from pre-school age. Proud Democrat for life. Ardent environmentalist and pro-choicer. Hoping to use my skills set for the greater good. Still married to the same guy for 40+ years. Probably because he's a proud Democrat, too. Penmanship absolutely stinks, so I'm glad I'm a fast typist! I will always love Hillary and she will always be my President.
