I think these reports and assessments like the one by Defense Secretary Carter - that the Iraqis don't have the will to fight - WE NEED TO LOOK AT THAT, folks!!! BIG-TIME!!!!!

WHY is that? WHY do you suppose that is? How long have we been training these idiots? 12 years??? How much money and blood have we squandered over there? And for WHAT??? Are they like the toddler who won't learn how to walk because he knows Mom will carry him around, everywhere? Is Iraq the kid who won't learn to feed himself because he's still used to suckling at the teat - by the time he's turned FOUR, and Mom won't wean him off yet????

I've heard arguments beginning to be advanced such that - "they don't want it that badly." WE are the ones who seem to want it, but if they don't want it for themselves, then WHY are we knocking ourselves out for them? WHY are we STILL knocking ourselves out for them? WHY are we still propping up their lazy chicken asses if all they're gonna do it turn tail and run? WHY are we still talking about, and entertaining the notion, and giving airtime and face time on camera to those who insist we have to send thousands more American boots onto the ground over there?

If THEY don't have the will to fight, WE will be stuck over there, fighting THEIR civil war, FOR THEM, for centuries to come.

And I'm wondering also - does NO ONE remember how long we've already seen this happening? Does anybody remember the end of Operation Desert Storm? The "Stormin' Norman" Schwarzkopf war? Under bush1? Anybody remember the MUCH-vaunted and feared Republican Guard troops of Saddam Hussein - who were feared and dreaded and so fierce and had such a reputation as merciless, murderous, ruthless, damn-near-invincible fighters? Well, that's what we were sold. That's the story we were told and the bullshit we were sold. We went in, as a coalition, and drove Saddam out of Kuwait. And those same ferocious much-feared Republican Guard troops left a huge swath of debris and discarded booty that they'd stolen from the Kuwaitis and trucks and guns and all kinds of crap on the sand in the desert in a visible path leading out of Kuwait back to Iraq. They turned and RAN. They BAILED! They BOOKED! They turned tail and skeedaddled outta there! Couldn't run away fast enough! They RAN AWAY! RAN AWAY! Doesn't anybody remember the astonishing photos that were taken and published of that "highway" of wreckage and debris and discarded weapons and supplies and stolen goods that they just tossed onto the ground and left behind in their haste to RUN AWAY. Does ANYBODY remember that?????

These were the "invincible" and "fearsome" Iraqi Revolutionary Guard. Who RAN AWAY. When push came to shove, they RAN AWAY. Does ANYBODY remember that?????

What does THAT tell you? Seems to me that's nothing but a template to predict future behavior. Seems to me that oughta be a lesson in what we can expect of these folks in the future. They're not gonna stand their ground. They're not gonna stay and fight. Even when they outnumber their enemy by a ratio of 7-1. SEVEN to ONE. Even with the biggest and baddest "training" from the purportedly biggest and baddest military entity the world has ever known. We POUR money and time and expertise and patience and training - FUCK IT! Yeah, "training." You can't train the people! NOBODY can train these people. When they're predisposed to giving up and running for the hills when the going gets tough. When their most basic instinct is to trop everything and running. Does ANYBODY remember that?????

So then WHY should we even be considering going back in there to bail their sorry asses out when they don't have the will to keep themselves bailed out? How many more of our loved ones will be sent over there to sacrifice and/or get their legs blown off? HOW MANY MORE??? And when will it end???????????????? Why are we supposed to be the ones propping up alleged government entities that are doomed to failure because their indigenous population is too unmotivated or weak or idiotic to fight for themselves? How many more broken, fucked-up, homeless veterans will we create - against whom we then whine about having to pay their medical bills that will extend over the rest of their lives, or gripe about having to pay higher taxes to cover all those costs WE insisted they incur?

I don't give a rat's ass what Colin Powell said about the Pottery-Barn ethic ("if you broke it, you bought it&quot . NOT WITH MY KID you don't! We shouldn't have gone there in the first place to break it in the first place. We gave it more than a decade, we STILL have troops over there to this day, and we've flushed probably a couple of trillion dollars down that bottomless rat hole. TOWARD WHAT END? Is anything better because of what we did? Did it help, what we did? Did it make any permanent difference for the good, what we did? I think we can all agree that the answers to those questions are all two-word answers: "HELL NO!!!" So why are we still even talking about staying in it, or amping it back up again? When it's already destined to fail?

And I wonder, also, as a retired broadcast journalist, WHY we have not seen clips of that immediate aftermath of Operation Desert Storm, when the Iraqis turned tail and RAN AWAY? Where is the archived footage? Hell, even Rachel Maddow hasn't provided any of that. And surely by now SHE should, since she's into adding historical context to every lead story on her show!
