Among the many things Trump ruined is the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Just before he

slithered out of the Oval Office, he awarded one to Jim Jordan.

I'm sure any results of a GOP "investigation" of the events January 6th will be supported by

"evidence" just as valid and convincing as all that "evidence" that supported those 80-plus lawsuits alleging a "stolen" election.

Maybe they can name Rudy as their counsel.

If you are a casual observer of politics who just watched Minority Leader McCarthy's presser

and just dropped in to see what we Democrats made of it, the following is just my opinion. I do not speak for DU or the Democratic Party, but I support both.

I see no need to even attempt to tell you what to think about what you just saw and heard. I am a Democrat and we don't presume that we are any more perceptive or intelligent or "sophisticated" than anyone else. Contrary to how some would have you evaluate recent events in our nation, we urge you to believe your own eyes---and ears.

The party Mr. McCarthy represented at that press conference this afternoon has repeatedly insisted that what we saw and heard on January 6th was simply a group of non-violent tourists who were invited into the Capitol.
Is that what you saw and heard?

When they reconvened in the wee hours of the morning after the crowd of people toting Trump flags and Confederate flags had broken into the Capitol with the announced intent to overturn the 2020 election, the overwhelming majority of Mr. McCarthy's party, including him, voted to do just that: overturn the free and fair election that Trump lost.
Do you think Mr. McCarthy and Mr.Jordan should decide how the January 6th event is evaluated? Do you think they would even try to seek a truth that they found politically inconvenient?

You have likely witnessed spoiled toddlers throwing temper tantrums when things did not go their way.
Did you see anyone behaving in a similar fashion this afternoon?

Mr. McCarthy's party now complains loudly that the select committee will be "highly partisan".
Does their blocking of the originally proposed equally divided bipartisan commission make their current complaint sound insincere?

Don't let me or anyone else tell you what you've seen and heard. And don't let anyone tell you what you should think about it.

America depends on us to use our common sense and to elect people who can and will do the same.
Let's do that.

About McCarthy's five picks for the January 6th Commission---

---will they wear their red noses on the inside or outside of their masks?

We humans have a tendency to do our best to make sense of whatever we encounter in life.

"Apophenia" is the term for finding patterns in random unconnected events or images. Visually, we often "see" the outlines of familiar animals or faces in shifting clod formations or find letters or numbers in the dots and swirls of a textured ceiling or random pattern carpet. I think we may be doing something similar when we repeatedly try to "make sense" of the words or actions of the Trump party and their motley crew of fellow travelers.

They don't have "plans" or "goals" as those terms are normally defined.

Their concerns are limited to what will most benefit them in the short term.

They can repeat the RWNJ "meme du jour", but they cannot explain what it means.

Concepts like honesty, tolerance, reason and civility play no part in what they do or say.

The point is, maybe trying to figure out why they are what they are and do what they do is s meaningless waste of time. Our attempts to educate them, reason with them or shame them all make the same error we make with our "apophanies": we start with the bias that there's a "there" there; that they care about right and wrong and possess a sense of shame.

Maybe they are willfully ignorant and enjoy being mean. That's not a pretty picture no matter how hard you squint.

If I was challenged to name is the five WORST, most hypocritical, despicable, lying

Republicans, I might spend hours trying but, eventually, I'd have to admit that there's no way to narrow it down to just five.
