The remaining Doolittle Raiders will gather in Dayton, Ohio, for a final time next month.

The revered World War II heroes will lift their goblets, sip their 117-year-old cognac and say good-bye to a decades-old tradition of gathering with their comrades to reflect on their contribution to American history. “It’s bittersweet,” said Wes Fields, who lives in Destin and has served as the Raiders’ security guard and escort for decades.

He will attend the toast at the National Museum of the Air Force on Nov. 9. “You want to be involved in it, but in a sense you don’t because you dread it. It’s coming to an end,” Fields said. On April 18, 1942, 80 men led by Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle took off in B-25s from an aircraft carrier to bomb Japan. It was the first retaliation after Pearl Harbor, and while the physical damage to Japan was minimal the raid was a tremendous boost for morale back home. Nearly every year since the raid, the men had gathering for a reunion —the last of which was held in Fort Walton Beach earlier this year. As part of the tradition, they hold a toast before a set of 80 goblets engraved with each Raider’s name. After the toast, they overturn the goblet of any Raider who passed on that year.

Three of the remaining four Raiders — 98-year-old Lt. Col. Dick Cole, 93-year-old Lt. Col. Ed Saylor and 92-year-old Staff Sgt. David Thatcher — will attend their final toast. They will open the famed bottle of Hennessy Very Special cognac from 1896, the year Jimmy Doolittle was born.

Encounter with an A$$*ol* Republican Teabagger at the grocery store.

My car has developed some vacuum hose leaks (we found two) and hasn't been running well enough for me to risk taking it on the road till all are found and fixed. So I waited till my husband got home from work at 10:15 tonight to take a late night run to the grocery store for necessities (dog food and cat food! as well as people food).

While we were loading up his ancient (1994) Chevy van with our purchases, a big guy (older with pale gray hair) walked by asking if we'd seen "the crop of bums we are raising in this country." And my husband answered, "Yeah, and all of them are in Washington."

Then he walked back toward us and said, "Did you hear what they are doing with the military in Afghanistan?" And I asked what? He said, "Obama's so petty he's refusing to pay for the funerals and death benefits for the soldiers."

I answered, "Well that's because the Republicans shut down the government and won't fund anything."

He got angry and said that's not so, blah blah. And I said, "yes it is true. I keep pretty well informed, but I'm not going to argue with you."

At which point he became so incensed that he pointed to the groceries that we were loading and said, "Let me ask you this, HOW MUCH OF THAT AM I PAYING FOR?"

Now I am incensed, actually infuriated. "Nothing! We both work!" "Yeah, right," was his rejoiner as he made tracks away. I hope not so fast that he didn't hear me say "what an asshole."

My husband and I both work and have fortunately never had to rely on public assistance. But I'm not unaware that bad luck and circustances could change that for us as it has for many.

What I can't understand is the absolute hatefulness people like that jackass to perfect strangers. And how would have someone who was forced to rely on public assistance felt to hear the contempt of that jackass.

I'm not a vindictive person, but I would love to grind his face into a bit of poverty for a while. I don't think he'd learn anything, but one could hope.

"Bill is s (bleeping) Jackass"

http://ceedubb.com/2013/10/bill-is-a-fucking-jackass/

So, Imagine that the company you work for held a poll, and asked everyone if they thought it would be a good idea to put a soda machine in the break room. The poll came back, and the majority of your colleagues said “Yes”, indicating that they would like a soda machine. Some said no, but the majority said yes. So, a week later, there’s a soda machine.

Now imagine that Bill in accounting voted against the soda machine. He has a strong hatred for caffeinated soft drinks, thinks they are bad you you, whatever. He campaigns throughout the office to get the machine removed. Well, management decides “OK, we’ll ask again” and again, the majority of people say “Yes, lets keep the soda machine.”

Bill continues to campaign, and management continues to ask the employees, and every time, the answer is in favor of the soda machine. This happens, lets say… 35 times. Eventually, Bill says “OK, I’M NOT PROCESSING PAYROLL ANYMORE UNTIL THE SODA MACHINE IS REMOVED”, so nobody will get paid unless management removes the machine.

What should we do???

Your pitbull found me and I'm not giving her back.*UPDATE AND FB PAGE* (Nashville, TN)

ON EDIT: Clarification: I just reposted this from Craig's list; I am not the person who rescued this dog.

http://nashville.craigslist.org/laf/4104113537.html

Last Friday night, your dog wondered up onto our porch. Signs of the abuse she had somehow escaped, riddled her body. The fresh bite marks on her muzzle, the scars that covered her body, the exposed pink and purple flesh around her neck, where she was obviously tied up with ropes that cut their way into her skin, over and over again. The obvious signs that she had been bred, relentlessly, time after time. The pressure wounds on her elbows that bled whenever they touched anything, from being tied and forced to lay on cement ground and metal cage mesh.

None of those things are even the worst part. Upon examining her teeth to gauge her approximate age, I burst into tears. I found that you had pulled the majority of them out and the ones you left, had been filed down. And you did this without anaesthesia, this I am sure of. You did this so she couldn't fight back. You did this so she couldn't injure any dogs you had trained to fight, when you threw her in there with them. With each bite of her they took and each yelp she cried, they'd look at you for reassurance. Because all they wanted to do was please you. Loyalty is in their blood. Violence is not.

The first night she was here, I stayed up with her and only slept for 2 hours. Every time I'd move, she'd get up and look at me with worry stricken eyes. She didn't want me to leave her.

Somehow, God must have led this mama to my doorstep, knowing she'd find comfort here. The next morning, I took her to my work on my day off. I work at an animal hospital.

Upon entering the building, her neck started to bleed. The thick collar which you put on her, had cut into the tender scars on her neck. She didn't even yelp. I discovered it as I was weighing her and saw blood on the scale. I took the ridiculous thing off of her.

The amazing people I work with have all fallen head over heels in love with your dog. So when we discovered she has breast cancer, it broke our hearts even more.

Over the last 3 days, our staff has grown to love this beautiful and broken soul. Skin and bones, we feed her constantly but only foods that are soft enough for her... You know, since you ripped her teeth out and all.

Mama lets you get right up in her face. In fact, she LOVES it. She'll give you slobbery kisses and nuzzle your face with love.

We're all amazed at how trusting of humans she is. Dogs however, completely terrify her. It doesn't matter the size, she growls in fear and tucks her tail between her legs. But who can blame her? After what you did to her?

Tomorrow, Mama will finally feel peace. And when she closes her eyes and takes her last breath, I'll be there. I'll hold her big ol head and I'll tell her how much I love her.

And when her soul has left her battered body and I've dried the tears enough to see, I will document every bruise, every bite, every cut, scrape and gash. I'll photograph her teeth, or rather, where her teeth used to be. I'll turn in all the evidence and post it where EVERYONE will see it. I'll use it to educate kids in heavily crime ridden areas, on the horrors of dog fighting.

If you could do that to a dog, you should not be allowed in everyday society. And teaching our children right from wrong is the only way to put a stop to this.

One day, you will be caught. If I ever find out who did this to the dog we all lovingly know as "Mama Jade" I honestly don't know what I would I do. But it would probably involve contacting your mother and informing her of what a monster she managed to raise. My goal would be to make a mockery out of your pathetic life.

Mama Jade's story will not be silenced. She just happened to show up on the doorstep of one extremely persistent, intelligent, respected and now angry human being.

**UPDATE**
Never would I have thought my Craigslist post about Mama Jade would go completely viral. I posted it last night, expecting to receive maybe a few emails about it but nothing huge. Today I have received LITERALLY thousands of emails from people all around the United States. My iPhone crashes every time I try to check my mailbox. The response has been overwhelming and has restored a lot of my faith in humanity. Many people and charities have asked if they could donate funds for Mama to get the treatment for her cancer. Tonight I'll do my best to review as many of the emails as possible and I'll make a decision on what the best route to take will be. One thing is for certain though, Mama Jade is getting yet another chance at life
Due to all the requests for a facebook page, one is up and running! From here on out, all updates will be posted here: https://www.facebook.com/MamaJadeNashville

Goodwill Fires, Presses Felony Charges ... For Giving Discounts To Store's Poorest Patrons

Good Will has always had a less than stellar reputation, which is the main reason I don't donate to them and rarely ever visit their local store.

http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/goodwill-fires-presses-felony-charges-against-andrew-anderson-19-giving-discounts-stores

When an employee at Goodwill’s store in Naples, Fla., started handing out freelance discounts to the shops poorest customers, Goodwill not only fired the young man, the company called the cops and now has him up on felony theft charges. (snip)

Anderson worked behind the counter at the Naples Goodwill outlet. He would often see the community’s poorest people come into the store, looking to buy clothes but with only a few bucks to their name.

"My heart was in the right place, my head was in the wrong place," Anderson told the TV station. (snip)

When his compassion got the better of his judgments, he would simply cut prices in half, then watch the delight on the faces of underprivileged people and families as they were actually able to afford to buy clothes for themselves and their kids. (snip)

More at link.

Keep in mind that almost all of the merchandise at Good Will is donated at no cost to Good Will, they pay their "charity" case workers at third world rates, and their CEO makes a minimum of $750,000 per year.

Firing the young man in this case is defendable. Pressing charges is not.
