Super cool, can I read more about the laser? I'm curious how it helps scientists learn more? Like does it reveal deeper layers so we can learn more?

@NASAPersevere
Yes, I can zap rocks from over 20 feet (~7 meters) away, and reach rocks my arm can’t reach. The laser helps us look at the rock textures and their chemical makeup. Read more about my laser here:

I dig the shiny spots in there. what could that be?

NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover
@NASAPersevere
The team has formulated many different hypotheses about this one -- is it something weathered out of the local bedrock? Is it a piece of Mars plopped into the area from a far-flung impact event? Is it a meteorite? Or something else?

Snip

WHAT’S NEW — Previous attempts to measure these minute differences between how atoms keep time — also referred to the ratio between them — had only ever delivered an accuracy of up to 17 digits.

But now using their new model, which includes the first-ever use of a ‘free-space link’ for this purpose (essentially, laser pulses of data going through the air instead of a cable,) the University of Colorado's BACON team (Boulder Atomic Clock Optical Network) has now measured this ratio reliably out to 18 digits.

WHY IT MATTERS — One digit might not make or break a grade on your final exam or even your credit score, but for extremely tiny measurements in physics, this is a big deal...

“Such frequency-ratio measurements are no mean feat, and are equivalent to determining the distance from Earth to the Moon to within a few nanometres,” says Godun in the essay.

While the helicopter is getting ready, I can’t help checking out nearby rocks. This odd one has my science team trading lots of hypotheses.

It’s about 6 inches (15 cm) long. If you look closely, you might spot the row of laser marks where I zapped it to learn more.

Gaetz’s lone “No” vote was worse than you think. The bill was the Combatting Human Trafficking in Commercial Vehicles Act. Parts of it regulated driver licenses to prevent trafficking.

His pal Greenberg is charged with falsifying a driver license to facilitate trafficking.

One provision directed a new committee to “develop recommended best practices for State and local transportation stakeholders to follow in combating human trafficking,” which involved updating technology and collection of documents from State agencies that issue driver licenses.

Robert J. DeNault
@robertjdenault
The issuance of driver licenses is a State power, so the federal government cannot directly regulate driver licenses in most instances. The goal was to develop best practices for State transportation agencies to prevent trafficking, then submit them to States.

Gaetz voted No.

Here are photos of the legislation, which established a Department of Transportation Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking. Gaetz said the feds shouldn’t be involved in State issues. Other “States’ rights” conservatives didn’t see a problem.

Robert J. DeNault
@robertjdenault
Most problematic (IMO) is that Greenberg is alleged by prosecutors to have committed a human trafficking offense using a falsified driver license between May-November 2017.

Gaetz’s No vote? December 2017.
