Security preparations underway in Atlanta, Washington DC ahead of planned protests

State leaders are taking no chances after what we saw happened in Washington DC when rioters stormed the Capitol, leaving 5 people dead including a police officer.
An 8-foot fence has been erected around the Capitol and Capitol police state troopers and other security forces will be there and monitoring Internet traffic.
After the insurrection and deaths last week, a flyer went out calling for people to march on state capitols this weekend. Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston checked with Atlanta police about the threat, and they said they are taking it very seriously.
“The City of Atlanta Police Department continues to coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to respond should protests or illegal activity occur. If activity begins to occur, APD is prepared to respond quickly,” police said in a statement.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said militia groups, the Proud Boys and anti-government extremists in the “boogaloo” movement are planning armed protests at Michigan’s Capitol on Sunday.
The Michigan National Guard was activated Friday at Schor’s request and Michigan State Police implemented a series of heightened security measures in response to protests at state Capitols planned ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. An FBI bulletin shared with local law enforcement warned militant anti-government groups were planning rallies on Jan. 17 in all 50 states, and the document included specific details about threats to Lansing.

Abandon Trump? Deep in the G.O.P. Ranks, the MAGA Mind-Set Prevails

Two days later, the Republican chairman of Nye County in Nevada posted a conspiracy-theory-filled letter on the local committee website, accusing Vice President Mike Pence of treason and calling the rioting a “staged event meant to blame Trump supporters.”
And this week in Virginia, Amanda Chase, a two-term Republican state senator running for governor, maintained that President Trump might still be sworn into a second term on Jan. 20 and that Republicans who blocked that “alternative plan” would be punished by the president’s supporters.
“They’ve got Mitch McConnell up there selling out the Republican Party,” Ms. Chase, who spoke at the protest in Washington last week, said in an interview. “The insurrection is actually the deep state with the politicians working against the people to overthrow our government.”

Huge response to a mass COVID-19 vaccination site in Sequim is likely preview of what's to come
Seattle TimesRandall Thomas got up at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday to head to the COVID-19 vaccine clinic in Sequim, thinking he’d be one of the first in line. It turned out that about 2,000 people had the same idea.
News had spread that the drive-through clinic, run by the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, was offering vaccines to Sequim residents over 70 and their spouses. Thomas, 71, found himself in a line of cars more than a mile and a half long. Officials started turning drivers away soon after, before the clinic even opened.

Thomas came up 10 cars short of making the cutoff. He, and some of the hundreds of others who were turned away, are considering getting in line the night before Saturday’s clinic. They’re willing to camp out overnight for the promise of seeing loved ones again and of no longer having to live in fear.
The high demand and confusion in Sequim may be a preview of what’s to come for other Washington residents. By starting to vaccinate their large older adult populations, Clallam and Jefferson counties have moved into the next phase of vaccination, ahead of the state. The state Department of Health (DOH) plans to move into the next phase in the “coming days.”

US says Capitol rioters intended to 'capture and assassinate' elected officials

(CNN)Federal prosecutors offered the most chilling description yet of rioters who seized the Capitol last week, writing in a new court filing that the intention was "to capture and assassinate elected officials."
The view was included in a memo seeking to keep Jacob Anthony Chansley, who rallied people inside the Capitol using a bullhorn, in detention. According to Capitol Police information included in the filing, Chansley was notable for his headdress, face paint and carrying of a six-foot spear.
"Strong evidence, including Chansley's own words and actions at the Capitol, supports that the intent of the Capitol rioters was to capture and assassinate elected officials in the United States government," government prosecutors wrote.
The allegations, written by Justice Department lawyers in Arizona, come as the government have begun describing in more alarming terms what transpired.

The COVID vaccination process in NY is a real mess...
I, in good health, and eligible for a vaccination as an MTA employee, got an appointment through the City for next week.
My mother, an 82 yo cancer survivor in Westchester, got an appointment through Mt Sinai Hospital, which this week abruptly cancelled all it's non-employee appointments due to lack of supply.

This was all exacerbated by the last minute addition of 65+ to the Group 1B pool, which has overloaded the registration systems. Local media is reported that it may take three months to get an appointment at this time.

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged states to expand eligibility largely from health-care workers and nursing home residents to all people 65 and older, and younger people with compromised immune systems.

Biden Picks Former F.D.A. Chief to Lead Federal Vaccine Efforts

President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. has chosen Dr. David Kessler to help lead Operation Warp Speed, the program to accelerate development of Covid-19 vaccines and treatments, according to transition officials.
Dr. Kessler, a pediatrician and lawyer who headed the Food and Drug Administration during the presidencies of George Bush and Bill Clinton, has been a key adviser to Mr. Biden on Covid-19 policy and is co-chair of the transition team’s Covid-19 task force.
He will replace Dr. Moncef Slaoui, a researcher and former drug company executive, who will become a consultant to Operation Warp Speed. Dr. Kessler will share top responsibilities for the initiative with Gen. Gustave F. Perna, who will continue as chief operating officer, according to a Biden transition spokesman. Dr. Kessler’s responsibilities will cover manufacturing, distribution and the safety and efficacy of vaccines and therapeutics.
“Dr. Kessler became a trusted adviser to the Biden campaign and to President-elect Biden at the beginning of the pandemic, and has probably briefed Biden 50 or 60 times since March,” said Anita Dunn, co-chair of the transition team. “When staff gets asked, ‘What do the doctors say?,’ we know that David Kessler is one of the doctors that President-elect Biden expects us to have consulted.”

Lawmakers who conspired with Capitol attackers in legal peril

Lawmakers who interacted with the pro-Trump protesters who rioted at the Capitol last week could face criminal charges and will almost certainly come under close scrutiny in the burgeoning federal investigation into the assault, former prosecutors said.
“This is incredibly serious,” said Ron Machen, a former U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. “Although you would need compelling evidence before charging a member of Congress with anything related to the breach of the Capitol that day, this has to be investigated.”
Unlike with the president, there’s no Justice Department policy shielding members of Congress from legal accountability while in office.
“I’d say those are potentially viable prosecutions,” added Peter Zeidenberg, another former federal prosecutor in Washington. “I’d say those guys should be worried.”
The role members of Congress may have played in facilitating the deadly attack drew intense attention this week after Democratic lawmakers alleged that some of their Republican colleagues facilitated tours of the Capitol on January 5 — one day before demonstrators engaged in the assault that terrorized lawmakers, ransacked congressional offices and left as many as five people dead.
