brooklynite's JournalAOC, Tlaib, Pressley call on Biden to dump Powell as Fed chair
PoliticoThe statement opposing Powell by the high-profile progressive Democrats is part of a mounting effort on the left to urge Biden to reshape the Fed, though the prospect of Powells reappointment has split opinion among liberal advocates and lawmakers.
As news of the possible reappointment of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell circulates, we urge President Biden to re-imagine a Federal Reserve focused on eliminating climate risk and advancing racial and economic justice, the lawmakers said in a joint statement to POLITICO. We urge the Biden Administration to use this opportunity to appoint a new Federal Reserve Chair.
They acknowledged that the Fed under Powell has made positive changes by steering the central bank toward a greater emphasis on reaching full employment. But they said they want to see someone at the helm who is more aggressive on financial regulation and climate change.
A reminder that the devastation of Katrina didn't come with landfall...

How long will power be out in metro New Orleans? Entergy says it will assess damage Monday
Source: Times-Picayune
Four parishes in southeast Louisiana - and parts of two more - had their main source of power cut when eight Entergy transmission lines failed in Hurricane Ida's intense winds, including a tower that fell into the Mississippi River.
New Orleans is in the dark, along with Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes as well as parts of St. Charles and Terrebonne parishes.
But so far exactly what caused the transmission lines to shut down after Ida came ashore at Port Fourchon as a devastating Category 4 hurricane is unclear, as the storm's devastating winds have prevented crews from conducting a damage assessment.

Biden faces Dem defections
Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.) said in a statement that it's "long past time" to end U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, but added: "it appears that the evacuation process has been egregiously mishandled."
In a phone interview with Axios, she added she doesn't place all the blame on Biden. She said there will be a lot to uncover through future congressional oversight hearings.
Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), a former CIA officer who focused on counterterrorism efforts in the Middle East, spearheaded a bipartisan statement from the Problem Solvers Caucus calling on the administration to reconsider Tuesday's withdrawal deadline.
Reps. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) and Andy Kim (D-N.J.) also have called on Biden to extend the deadline.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) distanced herself from the president as he reiterated his commitment to the withdrawal date: "We must complete this mission, regardless of any arbitrary deadlines."
A spokesman for Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a Navy combat veteran, told Axios: "Senator Kelly has been critical of the administrations execution of the withdrawal. ... [H]e has said in multiple press interviews since then that he sees the August 31st deadline as less important than accomplishing the mission of evacuating Americans and Afghan allies."

Hurricane Ida Makes Landfall in Louisiana as a Category 4 Storm
Source: New York Times
Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday as a Category 4 storm, battering the coast and threatening destruction in New Orleans as the storm stands to be one of the most devastating to strike the city since Hurricane Katrina.
The storms maximum sustained winds on Sunday morning reached 150 miles an hour, closing in on the 157 m.p.h. winds of a Category 5 storm. In New Orleans and across southeast Louisiana, residents were bracing themselves for the worst of the hurricane.
This is a major, major storm that is going to test us in ways that we have not been tested before, Gov. John Bel Edwards of Louisiana said on CBSs Face the Nation on Sunday.
The storm has New Orleans directly in its path. On the citys streets Sunday morning, the wind whipped in fearsome gusts as strong as 70 miles an hour. There were few cars in motion, except for the occasional howling emergency vehicle. Downtown, a few homeless people tucked themselves into the porticos of buildings. But the people who remained in New Orleans had mostly hidden themselves away.

Eric Clapton Appears Frustrated With Covid-19 Vaccine on New Song 'This Has Gotta Stop'
Rolling StoneA bluesy shuffle, This Has Gotta Stop appears to reference some of the medical issues that Clapton said he experienced after receiving an AstraZeneca vaccination earlier this year with what he claimed were disastrous results: My hands and feet were either frozen, numb or burning, he wrote at the time. As he sings in This Has Gotta Stop, I knew that something was going on wrong/When you started laying down the law/I cant move my hands, I break out in sweat/I wanna cry, I cant take it anymore. In the chorus he sings, This has gotta stop/Enough is enough/I cant take this BS any longer.
Written by Clapton, the song features drummer Sonny Emery and longtime Clapton bassist Nathan East, and backup singer Sharon White, and was produced by Simon Climie, another part of Claptons team. A spokesperson for Clapton said there were no plans at the moment for a full album to follow.
The video includes images of people turned into marionettes or staring zombie-style at their phones; politicians or government officials addressing crowds; and others holding signs that say Liberty and Enough Is Enough. It also includes an illustration of Jam for Freedom, the anti-lockdown UK street-performer group that Clapton supports, as well as imagery of a world on fire from environment disaster.
