GM recalls 1M pickup trucks, SUVs over steering defect

Sept. 13 (UPI) -- General Motors issued a recall Thursday of more than one 1 million full-size trucks and sport-utility vehicles for a steering defect that could cause drivers to lose control.

GM identified a problem in the software that controls the power steering on 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500s, GMC Sierra 1500s, Chevrolet Suburbans and Tahoes, GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades.

The automaker said the defect can cause the vehicle to lose power steering momentarily, especially at low speeds. The same problem has been linked to other electrical systems, including stability control, cruise control and air conditioning.

The problem has been linked to 30 crashes and two injuries. GM said it's not aware of any deaths.

Dealerships will update the software to fix the problem at no cost to owners.

Congress sends Trump energy spending bill that includes healthy boost for science

The U.S. Congress today sent President Donald Trump a 2019 spending bill that boosts funding for the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) basic research efforts—and rejects deep cuts to the department’s applied research programs that the White House had proposed.

If Trump signs the bill into law—as many observers expect—DOE’s Office of Science would get a 5.2% spending boost, to $6.585 billion, in fiscal year 2019, which begins 1 October. In contrast, the Trump administration had proposed slashing the Office of Science budget by 13.9% to $5.39 billion.

The White House had called for an even bigger cut to applied energy research supported through DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE), a 70% whack to $696 million. Instead, the bill—which the House of Representatives approved today and the Senate passed yesterday—gives EERE a 2.5% increase to $2.379 billion. Similarly, the White House had sought to eliminate the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), which seeks to quickly translate the best ideas from DOE-funded basic research into budding technologies that can be developed further by private industry. The bill gives ARPA-E a healthy 3.7% boost to $366 million.

In a report accompanying the bill, congressional appropriators warn the administration against trying to cut or kill the EERE and ARPA-E programs. “The Department shall not use any appropriated funds to plan or execute the termination of ARPA-E,” it states. “In addition, the Department is directed to disburse funds appropriated for ARPA-E on eligible projects with a reasonable time period, consistent with past practices.” In April 2017, DOE came under fire from Congress for refusing to dispense the grant money Congress had appropriated for ARPA-E.

The report contains similar language ordering DOE “to maintain a diverse portfolio of early-, mid-, and late-stage research, development, and market transformation activities” within EERE. In its call to slash the EERE budget, the White House had said it would do so in large measure by shifting the program’s focus to early stage research alone.

Ford Issues Recall on 2018 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX

Ford announced a safety recall Thursday in North America on the 2018 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX due to incorrect door striker bolts installed in the vehicles. The bolts in question are 5 millimeters shorter than the required length and in the event of a crash, the shorter bolts could enable the door to open, increasing the risk of injury.

Approximately 555 vehicles are affected by the recall according to a Ford press release. The recall includes vehicles built at Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant July 27-31, 2018. Owners can take their vehicles to the dealer and the striker bolts in all four doors will be replaced by Ford.

There are approximately 555 vehicles in North America relating to this concern, with 503 vehicles in the United States and its federalized territories, 51 in Canada and one in Mexico. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18C06.

This is Ford's second recall this month. Last week they issued a recall for 2 million F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab models for faulty seatbelt pretensioners that could cause a fire. In July Ford recalled the Fusion, Escape and the F-53 stripped chassis which is used for Class A motorhomes. In that recall the Fusion and Escape suffered from faulty cable bushings, while the F-53 stripped chassis vehicles weren't equipped with the proper front wheel studs.
