It's true, less than 4 years of the New Deal cured some republicans of the notion

of conservatism being good for them forever by the time of the 1936 election. Democrats controlled our government for about 20 years after FDR was elected.

"...In order to dismantle the New Deal, ultraconservatives have invested many billions since the late 1970s in changing the way conservatives think and artificially widening the gulf between sides so that most believe cooperation with us in anything would be harmful to the nation."

True, I saw it happen. Nevertheless, conservatives gave us that mythical gift of "pragmatic conservatism" with Nixon in '68, and again in '72. And then went on to insult the entire universe by electing Reagan an 1980. Conservative Democrats joined with conservative Republicans to place an unquestionably evil man in the position of Commander in Chief of the United States. So not cool. The "left" is the very antithesis, the polar opposite, of Reagan.

I'm old, and the older I get, the more I see the damage inflicted upon humanity by conservatives continue to mount. Even in its least extreme form, it still contributes to impoverishment of our people, and the destruction of our planet.

"Democrats moving to the middle is a double disaster that alienates the party's progressive base while simultaneously sending a message to swing voters that the other side is where the good ideas are.' It unconsciously locks in the notion that the other side's positions are worth moving toward, while your side's positions are the ones to move away from. Plus every time you move to the center, the right just moves further to the right." George Lakoff

The gangs, and "superpredators" are the oligarchs, and their minions, who preserve the

status quo establishment at all cost. There would be little or none of the the type of gang violence you speak of if people had equal opportunity social and economic justice. Oppressed peoples have always banded together to protect themselves from the oppression of oligarchs and royalty.

Stop these bloodsucking superpredator oligarchs. Please. Vote for Bernie

I'll be your huckleberry.

1) Remove his name. Do you agree with it?

No.

2) If it was any leader known for helping contribute to significant change through protest, does that impact your thoughts on modern day protesting?

No.

3)How or why does today differ?

The cops have numerous new types of effective, usually non-lethal weapons with which to try to shut us down. The MSM can no longer use ignoring fact and truth as a useful weapon to combat the the effectiveness of direct action because of the internet. The whole world is watching. Literally. There are other reasons as well, but time concerns make it necessary to keep it simple.

Occupy Wall St is one example of the effectiveness of modern protest. Occupy's message of economic justice helped lay the foundation for a sincere presidential candidate like Senator Sanders to make a successful run for president. Occupy direct action created the tension needed to open a national dialog, in which millions more people became aware of the economic injustices (and social injustices) perpetrated upon the 99% by the 1% oligarchs and their fully oligarch owned and operated political establishment.

Ferguson, etc, and BLM, are other examples of the effectiveness of modern day protest. What these protests have done is create the tension necessary to catapult into the national dialog the fact that cops are murdering POC at an alarming rate, with impunity. Right here on this DU page, right now, we have clear examples of the effectiveness of both protest movements.

The essence of these words of Dr. King are as true today as they were on the day he first conceived them:

"You may well ask: "Why direct action? Why sit ins, marches and so forth? Isn't negotiation a better path?" You are quite right in calling for negotiation. Indeed, this is the very purpose of direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored. My citing the creation of tension as part of the work of the nonviolent resister may sound rather shocking. But I must confess that I am not afraid of the word "tension." I have earnestly opposed violent tension, but there is a type of constructive, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth. Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood. The purpose of our direct action program is to create a situation so crisis packed that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation. I therefore concur with you in your call for negotiation. Too long has our beloved Southland been bogged down in a tragic effort to live in monologue rather than dialogue."

Thanks for asking!

Yes, if he was running against Hillary Clinton. Republicans are getting record turnouts

in the primaries so far.

The young voters who Bernie has brought into the Democratic party are motivated to participate in the process because Bernie reflects their values and knows what he has to do to give them the springboard opportunities they need for a saner and more rewarding future.

If Hillary gets the nomination, many of these young voters will throw up their hands in disgust and stay home for the GE, or vote third party, or leave simply not cast a vote for a presidential candidate.

Many longtime Dems and left independents have been alienated beyond the tipping point of being able to tolerate holding their noses and voting for the lesser of two evils. They will no longer allow themselves to be held hostage in a two party system where oligarchs control both parties and use them for their own profit and power accumulation purposes. Many longtime Dems will most likely vote third party or not cast a vote for a presidential candidate.

So here we are, standing at the crossroad.

Capitalist oligarchs believe that no action is immoral, or unethical, when done in the name

of corporate profit. They will go to war, using nothing but lies and deceit for justification, and kill and maim hundreds of thousands of innocent people, in order to secure, and/or expand, their interests. For them, democracy is something that must be prevented at any cost.

Hillary will quickly end racism and sexism overnight by maintaining

the status quo oligarch establishment. Her Brand is "Change Without Change".

Changing by staying the same is the only way to end racism and sexism. We have absolutely no reason to break up these big banks that are impoverishing us, destroying democracy, and crushing our hopes and dreams, if doing so will not end racism and sexism. It is impossible to promote economic justice and social justice at the same time. Becuz, uh, well, um, the Hillary campaign says so. I think I saw it on TV, so it's gotta be true.

How can you people not understand this?

Bernie has 10 times more experience in dealing with foreign affairs than Obama

and Bill Clinton combined when they began their campaigns. Fail.

It seems that the author is out of touch with everyday people. We know who Bernie Sanders is. He was speaking to us, in Town Hall/Fireside Chat type format on the "Brunch With Bernie" segment of Thom Hartmann's radio, and later his TV show, almost every week, for many years. Bernie was telling us all about the workings of government, and his ideas for change, on this show. Many Bernie supporters know more about Bernie than than they do about all the rest of Congress and President Obama combined. Because he actually took the time to speak to us on an equal level every week for many years.

Don't believe me? Here ya go:

The author is apparently a propagandist who doesn't really know jack shit about Bernie Sanders. The credibility of the OP essay is now at less than zero.

"But if this establishment is the enemy, then on whose side is he on?"

Duh.

He's on our side, and we are the 99%.

One primary issue all racial minorities in the US have to deal with every day

is existing and surviving in a long established white supremacist oligarchy, which is institutionalized in the system as well as the general cultural consciousness. How some individuals and general majorities of various minorities approach improving their unique situations may be radically different than others.

Bernie Sanders won Democratic precinct on Meskwaki Reservation
Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton eked out a narrow win in the caucuses in Iowa on Monday night but Indian voters on one reservation showed a lot more support to rival Bernie Sanders.

According to the results from the Democratic party, the Senator from Vermont won a whopping 83.3 percent of the vote at the Indian Settlement precinct in Tama County. Members of the Meskwaki Tribe caucused at their tribal center and only gave 16.7 percent of their votes to Clinton, a former Secretary of State and a former Senator from New York.

'My friends, I am the son of a Polish immigrant who came to this country speaking no English, and having no money. My father worked everyday of his life, and he never made a whole lot. My Mom and Dad, and brother and I grew up in a small three and a half room, rent controlled apartment in Brooklyn, New York. My Mother, who died at a young age, always dreamed of moving out of that apartment, getting a home of her own, but she never realized that dream.

The truth is that neither one of my parents could ever have dreamed that I would be here tonight standing before you as a candidate for President of the United States.

This is the promise of America, and this is the promise we must keep alive for future generations. What began last week in Iowa, what voters here in New Hampshire confirm tonight, is nothing short of the beginning of a political revolution.

It is a political revolution that will bring tens of millions of our people together. It will bring together working people who have given up on the political process. It will bring together young people who have never participated in the political process. It will bring together blacks, and whites, latinos, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, straight and gay, male and female. People who were born in America, and people who immigrated here.

We will all come together to say loudly, and clearly that the government of our great nation belongs to all of us, not just a few wealthy campaign contributors. That is what this campaign is about, that is what the political revolution is about. So, New Hampshire, thank you again. And, now it's time.
