Twerking shoplifter sought in South Florida

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (CBS12) - A woman wanted for shoplifting in South Florida may go viral before going to jail.

Pembroke Pines Police released video of a woman twerking in an aisle at MadRag, a woman's clothing store, last month.

Police said the woman and her female accomplice walked out of the store with nearly $400 worth of merchandise.

Investigators described the booty-shaking shoplifter as heavy set, with short black hair and multiple tattoos. Police described the second woman as medium-set with long black hair.

House Democrats can officially stop wasting time on Mueller

His work is done.

If you believe Pelosi just wants to run out the clock on impeachment, which I do, he’s saying don’t waste your time on me, what I have to say is in the report, PLUS, in case you didn’t understand what we said in writing: “If we had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.”

So what we have here is a report that was delivered in late March, followed by two months of Democratic leadership saying we need to hear from Mueller and a statement today that basically amounts to

a) no you don’t, what I have to say is in the report,

b) we did not exonerate the President on obstruction; if there was no crime we would have said so and

c) the Constitution requires a process other than through the criminal justice system to find a president guilty of a crime.

That’s called impeachment. Your move, Speaker Pelosi.

How Nancy Pelosi's Tactics Affirm the Trumpian Style of Politics

...The prevailing wisdom in the Democratic Party seems to be that good opposition politics is a very slow walk to impeachment, as performed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She has said that she is opposed to impeachment because it is “divisive,” and because Trump is “just not worth it,” and has reportedly said, behind closed doors, that impeachment is what Trump wants, because he expects to be exonerated by the Senate. Pelosi, the wisdom has it, is building a case for impeachment both in congressional inquiries and in her public feud with Trump: she provokes him in some way—most recently, by saying that he is “engaged in a coverup,” or by hoping aloud that someone close to Trump would stage “an intervention for the good of the country”—and he responds by performing Trump. “In each case,” as Politico put it, “Trump handed Pelosi a huge gift, a priceless moment that helped unify the Democratic Caucus behind her at a crucial time.”

...Still, the premise of the argument that Trump is digging his own grave by doing more Trump is that the amount of Trump we have observed since January, 2017, is not yet enough to take action. Pelosi’s “coverup” comment, which set Trump off on Wednesday, implies that something remaining to be uncovered can make a difference to our understanding of this Presidency—that the known facts are not enough to make Trump’s continued Presidency inconceivable. Similarly, the idea that continued congressional hearings on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings are necessary to build a case for impeachment suggests that a hundred and eighty-two pages documenting the President’s efforts to obstruct the investigation are not enough. The purpose of these congressional hearings is not to systematize the evidence—that can be done in the course of impeachment proceedings—but to give human faces and voices to the Mueller report, and to goad Trump into obstructing oversight in plain view. The pragmatics are creating political momentum that might make it more difficult for Senate Republicans to resist impeachment. But the logic is that the public must be shown how unfit Trump is to be President. As though the public hasn’t seen enough—as though, indeed, what the public has seen so far is a Presidency that we can live with.

Worse, Pelosi’s tactics, apparently designed to expose Trump’s unfitness, affirm the Trumpian style of politics: vulgar, cruel, and value-free. Pelosi has become Trump’s personal troll. She played the part during the State of the Union address, when she applauded Trump the way one might applaud a lying, cheating, attention-hogging teen-ager: arms straight, head cocked, her entire being projecting insincerity. She played the part after she taunted the President following his tantrum, suggesting that he suffered from a “lack of confidence,” and again, on Thursday, with her “intervention” comments. Most of the mainstream media have followed with horse-race-style coverage, calling each step of the feud for Pelosi.

In a world where trolling is politics, Pelosi is winning. Politico praises her for being “so good at infuriating Trump.” CNN delights in Trump “taking Nancy Pelosi’s bait.” The Trumpification of American politics is being perpetrated by bipartisan consensus. Pelosi, and an apparent majority of Democratic Washington, seem to think this is preferable to an attempt at impeachment that is likely to be thwarted by Senate Republicans. Failure, in other words, is unacceptable, but this—the flagrant dysfunction, the trivialization of all that used to be politics, the spectacle of daily national shame—is acceptable. Trump will be gone someday, but the possibilities that Trumpism has created will remain.

Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon of Pa. calls for impeaching Trump

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, a Delaware County Democrat who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, called Tuesday for opening impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, adding to a roiling debate within her party.

Scanlon is the second Pennsylvania member of Congress to call for impeachment, after U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans, a Philadelphia Democrat who took that stand in 2017. As a member of the judiciary committee, she would be part of the panel that would begin the proceedings and investigate the president. Scanlon’s statement came as members of the House Democratic leadership team have increased the pressure on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) to move ahead with impeachment, which Pelosi has long resisted.

Scanlon announced her stand on the day former White House counsel Don McGahn defied a subpoena to appear from the committee and face questions about Trump and potential obstruction of justice. Trump has vowed to fight all subpoenas as Democrats seek to investigate his administration’s actions and policies.

“Congress has patiently tried to work within traditional means to get to the bottom of this extraordinary situation. But, we have reached an inflection point,” Scanlon said in her statement. “The President’s refusal to produce evidence or permit witness testimony defies not only the rule of law but the basic protections of our Constitution. No one is above the rule of law. The time has come to start an impeachment inquiry because the American people deserve to know the truth and to have the opportunity to judge the gravity of the evidence and charges leveled against the President.”

She said it was “by no means an easy decision” but that Trump’s “efforts to cover up his acts, and those of his campaign and administration, threaten the foundation of our democracy.”

WaPo: Pelosi's leadership team rebels on impeachment, presses her to begin an inquiry

Because a lot of people don’t believe Politico.

Members of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s own leadership team confronted her in a contentious Monday night meeting and argued that it was time to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, according to multiple sources in the room.

At least five members of Pelosi’s leadership team — four who also sit on the House Judiciary Committee with jurisdiction over impeachment — pressed Pelosi to allow the panel to start the inquiry, which they argued would help investigators attain documents and testimony Trump has blocked.

Pelosi, according to sources in the room, pushed back on the idea with senior leaders, including House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.). Pelosi has also long been an impeachment skeptic and tried to tamp down impeachment talk in her caucus as recently as last week by encouraging members to focus on their legislative agenda.

...The meeting underscores the first time Pelosi’s rank-and-file members — including members of her leadership team — have lobbied her to change her long-held position on impeachment. Judiciary members for days have discussed how to move the speaker toward their thinking, but few have been willing to break with her publicly.

However, a core group of Judiciary Democrats on Tuesday plans to begin calling for an impeachment inquiry if former White House counsel Don McGahn does not show for subpoenaed testimony at 10 a.m., according to multiple sources familiar with the plan. The White House on Monday moved to block McGahn from showing up, arguing that he is exempt from testimony.

Pelosi clashes with fellow Dems in closed-door debate on impeachment

Yeah, it’s Politico. The debate was real; we know that because Cicilline has publicly called for an impeachment inquiry if McGahn doesn’t show tomorrow.

House Democratic leaders sparred internally on Monday over whether to begin an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her allies rejecting the call to move forward for now, according to multiple sources.

Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) — all members of the Democratic leadership — pushed to begin impeachment proceedings during a leadership meeting in Pelosi's office, said the sources. Pelosi and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) — one of her key allies and a member of leadership herself — rejected their calls, saying Democrats' message is being drowned out by the fight over possibly impeaching Trump.

...Cicilline said he supports impeachment inquiry if McGahn doesn't show tomorrow.

"I think if this pattern by the president continues, where he's going to impede and prevent and undermine our ability to gather evidence to do our job, we're going to be left with no choice," Cicilline said about initiating an impeachment inquiry. The Rhode Island Democrat insisted that simply beginning an inquiry doesn't mean that there will be a formal vote to impeach Trump.

"It's a means where we can collect that information... We need to have the ability to gather the evidence," Cicilline added.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), another member of the Judiciary Committee, is also in favor of an impeachment inquiry if McGahn doesn't appear on Tuesday.

"If McGahn doesn't show tomorrow, I think we're at an inflection point," Lieu said. "If we can't get information, I think we have to start proceeding down this path."
