Greg Abbott vows to defund state Legis after voting restrictions bill fails, threatening salaries

Greg is being a baby and a bad sport

Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday he would veto the section of the state budget that funds the Legislature, hours after a Democratic walkout killed his priority elections bill.

"No pay for those who abandon their responsibilities," Abbott said in a tweet. "Stay tuned."

Late Sunday night, enough Democrats left the House to break a quorum and block passage of the elections bill, Senate Bill 7, before a midnight deadline. Calling the bill's failure "deeply disappointing," Abbott quickly made clear he would call a special session to get it passed, though he has not specified a timeline.

Rep. Briscoe Cain is so incompetent that it was possible to kill the Texas voter suppression bill

My oldest child is very active and has some friends who work on staff in the Texas legis. There is some speculation that the Texas Speaker put Briscoe Cain in charge of the voter suppression efforts because everyone knows that Cain is an idiot and he would screw it up. This is some merit to this theory.

In his first term in the Texas House, Cain was ranked at the worst member of the Legislature in part due to his stupidity
https://twitter.com/4AnimalLife/status/1399237938127507457
Normally, Texas Monthly excludes freshman membesr of the Texas legis but Briscoe was so stupid that they waived this policy https://progresstexas.org/blog/republican-briscoe-cain-over-his-head

Named “Worst Legislator” by Texas Monthly

Since he stepped foot in the Texas Capitol, the third-term Republican has made a name for himself — and not a good one. After his first session, Texas Monthly named Cain one of the Worst Legislators of 2017, even though the magazine usually excludes freshmen from the list but when the magazine asked legislators to name their worst - there was bipartisan consensus on Cain. The (dis)honor cited Cain as the sole vote against excusing a legislator’s absence for a serious illness, and after that, he almost eliminated funding for terminally ill Texans because he thought “palliative care” meant “death panels.”

In 2019 Briscoe went after Dr. John Zerwas who was a decent member of the Legis on death panels Zerwas destroyed Briscoe so bad that it was funny
https://twitter.com/ShastaMchardy/status/1399231475392860166

Zerwas was one of the reasonable GOP members of the Texas legis and destroyed Briscoe

Next, Briscoe evidently volunteered to represent the former guy in the Penn. lawsuit but his offer of help was evidently rejected. It is amusing that even the former guy's legal team knew that Cain was a joke
https://twitter.com/kellylmiller/status/1399211892829155333

As a chairman, Briscoe has been so inept that he had to delete the claim that he was an expert in parlimentary procedure https://progresstexas.org/blog/republican-briscoe-cain-over-his-head

In over his head: At the hearing for House Bill 6, Cain screwed up the proceedings in more ways than one.

When legislators present a bill in their own committee, they usually let the Vice-Chair run the hearing. And while Cain did hand over control to Vice-Chair Jessica González, he broke procedure and took back control after she tried to recognize Rep. Nicole Collier, Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, for questions. In other words, Cain shut down the voices of two women of color because he didn’t like the questions they were asking about his voter suppression bill.

Immediately after, Cain recessed the hearing to stop his peers from questioning him further. Except he forgot to recess to a specific time, so under parliamentary rules, the hearing was terminated instead of recessed - everything had to be rescheduled for another day. That meant that over 200 Texans who had travelled across the state to testify against HB 6 were forced to leave.

And that “parliamentary guru” nickname? Cain removed it from his Twitter bio after Texans pointed out his total lack of any leadership skills during the hearing.

Finally, this exchange with State Rep. Anchia was so bad that it made me laugh

https://twitter.com/RafaelAnchia/status/1390494633579384832

The Democrats were lucky that Briscoe Cain was the chair of this committee and that he screwed things up so badly that the Texas Democrats were able to kill this voter suppression bill. Now there will be a chance to really go after the terms of the next bill and we can hope that Briscoe remains the chair of this committee

Greg Abbot is going to be primaried in 2022

Greg wants to run for POTUS in 2024 and needs to be re-elected in 2022. Right now, one former state senator has announced that he will primary Greg and tucker may be supporting this idiot
https://twitter.com/PatrickSvitek/status/1397566653504888832
In addition, Dan Patrick may primary Greg
https://twitter.com/PoliticsReid/status/1397910770940186627
In addition, that asshole Agriculture commissioner, Sid Miller, may primary Greg. Steve Hotze is right wing nutcase and Jared Woodfill is the idiot attorney who was the lead counsel in the drive through voting case and is currently representing the nurses in the COVID vaccine case against Methodist Hospital. Jared Woodfill is the former Harris County GOP party chair who was voted out a while back. Sid Miller is a truly disgusting human being
https://twitter.com/PatrickSvitek/status/1398844740334915591
Finally, I am hoping that Allen West will get into this zoo. Allen West is the current state party chair and is a true Qnut. I was amused to see that there is a bill proposing to put the GOP party chair on the ballot in the March primary in effect to get rid of West
https://twitter.com/PatrickSvitek/status/1398868417264984069
https://twitter.com/PatrickSvitek/status/1399045280562135042
Greg has mismanaged COVID and the vaccination program. Only a third of Texans are vaccinated. The RWNJ think that Gregg has been too tough on COVID and wanted Texas to never shut down.

This will be fun to watch

Neera Tanden is back. Could she be more powerful?

I am not only one to be amused that Politico did an almost decent article on Neera Tanden
https://twitter.com/JRubinBlogger/status/1398274688103731204

As senior adviser, Tanden is now among a small, select circle of advisers in the White House. She’s included in daily briefings. She’s one of a half dozen senior advisers and one of two senior advisers of color. And her close relationship to chief of staff Ron Klain means she’ll have his ear.

That proximity to power is a trade-off from the undoubted influence she would have wielded as Biden’s budget director at the Office of Management and Budget, where she would have had large sway over budget and regulatory policy. But it also means she’s free of the headaches that can come with the responsibilities of acting as a Cabinet secretary, like grillings from oversight committees or sparring with Senate members with whom she had previously clashed.

“While I believe she was singularly well-qualified to run OMB, her role as senior adviser to the president will give her the platform and opportunity to render tremendous service to the public,” said John Podesta, a longtime Tanden ally who founded the Center for American Progress, the think tank Tanden ran before leaving for the White House.

A good number of points of order will be raised tomorrow on GOP voter suppression bill

The Texas House and Senate came up with a new voter suppression bill. Normally when you reconcile a bill in committee, you either accept or delete provisions in either bill. Here the GOP came up with a brand new bill that has a number of new provisions that were not in either of the prior Senate or House bill. The Texas Democrats have been using points of order to kill some nasty GOP bills. For example this young man has been very effective in using points of order
https://twitter.com/CGHollins/status/1398489382873612289
Tomorrow the House Democrats have identified a good number of inappropriate provisions and will be raising a ton of points of order

This will be fun to watch
