"not so bad as..."

I wonder if the case before the supreme court that is poised to overturn Roe will be viewed as;

"not so bad as..." if it is any less than the pile of vomit alito wrote in his opinion to overturn Roe.

"not so bad as alito's opinion"
"not so bad as I feared"
"not so bad as those 'crazy' people warned"
etc.

How many talking heads, political podcasts, friends, family, or people here, would accept any diminishment of Roe as

"not so bad as..."

edited to add: I believe it is called lowering expectations. Or lowering the bar/standard.

Long-ish thread...snippets below

----

And no matter how often we warned you that the fate of nations is not a straight line bending towards a “manifest destiny,” you only saw Iran and women in chadors or Afghanistan and women in burqas and refused to believe that their fate awaited you.

----

So successful has white supremacist patriarchy been at convincing white women that they’re lucky to live in the U.S. and not Saudi Arabia or Iran, that so many white women did not pay enough attention to the theocracy that white supremacy was building right here at home.

----

It was being built by white men who look like their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, not the scary brown men with beards, right?

Erma Bombeck

“We've got a generation now who were born with semiequality. They don't know how it was before, so they think, this isn't too bad. We're working. We have our attache' cases and our three piece suits. I get very disgusted with the younger generation of women. We had a torch to pass, and they are just sitting there. They don't realize it can be taken away. Things are going to have to get worse before they join in fighting the battle.”

― Erma Bombeck

Erma Louise Bombeck, born Erma Fiste, was an American humorist who achieved great popularity for a newspaper column that depicted suburban home life humorously, in the second half of the 20th century.

For 31 years since 1965, Erma Bombeck published 4,000 newspaper articles. Already in the 1970s, her witty columns were read, twice weekly, by thirty million readers of 900 newspapers of USA and Canada. Besides, the majority of her 15 books became instant best sellers.

In 2018, white nationalist Richard Spencer made news when divorce papers accused him of emotional and physical abuse. The filing noted that Spencer frequently said that “the only language women understand is violence.” “Alt-right” figure Augustus Invictus was charged with domestic violence last year. Matthew Heimbach, another radical right leader, faced domestic violence charges in 2018.

Of course, misogyny and domestic violence are not confined to the extremist world. These groups reflect — and perpetuate — their presence in our wider culture.

We see the result in immigration policy that has torn mothers and children apart, and discouraged women from seeking safety from domestic violence due to the use of local police as immigration agents. We’ve seen it in whistleblower reports of forced hysterectomies and unnecessary gynecological procedures emerging from an immigrant detention center in Georgia. But this should come as no surprise given our nation’s immigration policies are shaped by senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller, whose ties to the extremist world have been well documented.

And we must not forget the devastating effect on transgender women, particularly those of color. During an SPLC panel discussion, Heron Greenesmith, a researcher at Political Research Associates, explained that the Trump administration and the right have co-opted the scare tactics of anti-trans white feminists, fabricating the narrative that trans rights infringe upon women’s rights, and therefore, only some of us can be ensured dignity, health and safety.

(edit for verdict) October 1985 - FBI Official Says Mormon Bias Prevented Firing of Spy Suspect

What did the republicans know and when did they know it?

FBI Official Says Mormon Bias Prevented Firing of Spy Suspect

Bernardo (Matt) Perez, formerly the second ranking FBI official in Los Angeles, said he was blocked from firing Miller in December, 1982, by the head of the Los Angeles office, Richard T. Bretzing, who is a Mormon bishop.

“We talked about Mr. Miller’s work record,” Perez said, recounting a conversation he recalled having with Bretzing. “From my personal knowledge, he was a bumbler. He was in all sorts of trouble. He was more than the office joke; he was the FBI joke.

-snip-

Perez, a Roman Catholic who filed a religious discrimination complaint against Bretzing last year, said Bretzing told him that he should let P. Bryce Christensen, another Mormon agent who personally supervised Miller as a counterintelligence agent, handle the Miller matter.

-snip-

Miller, 48, was arrested Oct. 2, 1984, along with Svetlana and Nikolai Ogorodnikov on charges of passing secret FBI information to the Soviet Union. He is the first FBI agent ever charged with espionage.

FBI Discriminated Against Latino Agents, Judge Rules

EL PASO — The FBI suffered a major embarrassment Friday when a U.S. district judge ruled that hundreds of Latino agents have been discriminated against and regularly assigned to demeaning duties commonly known as the “Taco Circuit.”

The ruling, issued here by U.S. District Judge Lucius D. Bunton, was heralded as a landmark by the FBI agent who filed the initial suit, Bernardo Matias (Matt) Perez, a former top FBI official in Los Angeles now serving as assistant special agent-in-charge of the El Paso office.

Although the class-action suit was decided in El Paso, its origins were in Los Angeles, where Perez filed his first discrimination complaint in 1983 during a prolonged dispute with then agent-in-charge Richard T. Bretzing.

they "would have voted for Bill Clinton all over again if they had the chance."

The interviewer also expresses shock over a comment made by Hillary's campaign media consultant Mandy Grunwald in the documentary.

"Women who judged Hillary for staying with Bill Clinton would have voted for Bill Clinton all over again if they had the chance. And kept saying so…And yet they took it out on Hillary," Grunwald reportedly says.

Hillary says, "That's exactly right."

"I wish I understood it, I really do," she continues. "And look, I lived through that, where women were judging me and then a little conversation would lead to the fact that they had a similar issue or their sister did or their friend did, and there was so much anxiety and even fear wrapped up in it. But it was also true that, as we saw in survey after survey, he could, if he ran today, get re-elected. What is it about this double standard, both double standard in public and double standard in private? I think the movie does a good job of raising that issue. Trying to answer it conclusively is impossible, but at least we should be asking ourselves that question.
