Happy people know that happiness is a choice. They know it is not a reaction to present circumstances. Instead, happiness is an available decision despite them. They have removed the thinking that waits for everything to be perfect before joy in life is experienced.

Overcoming Oppression with Power

Apart from resigning into depression, what can a low power group do when the dominant group is unwilling to negotiate a change in the status quo? Basically, there is only the possibility of increasing its relative power sufficiently to compel the other to negotiate. Relative power is increased by either of two means: enhancing one's own power or decreasing the other's power.

Enhancing Ones Own Power

As I have indicated in earlier essays, empowerment involves

1. increasing one's possession of the resources on which power is based and

2. increasing the effectiveness with which the power is used.

There are three areas in which those with low power can find additional resources:

1. within one's self or group;

2. within potential allies; and

3. within the oppressor.

Nelson Mandela in his autobiographical book, Long Walk to Freedom, provides many illustrations of how he did this, even when he was a prisoner of the repressive, apartheid South African government.[1]

I'm finding it therapeutic to browse quotations and post those I find to be particularly relevant. It helps builds up my courage, and when I post them, my hope is that it might help give others a change in perspective.

But change, especially when it's significant, is not linear

It's like the Dow-- it reaches highs and then it plummets-- but the trend is always upward.

Take President Obama.

That we nominated him and that he won was a huge leap forward-- and plus he succeeded as one of the best presidents ever. Now we're sliding backward. But that "glass ceiling" has been shattered forever.

Our country is going through growing pains-- so much change yet so many regressives who fight it tooth and nail.

Two steps forward, one step back...

Whether we're referring to gender or racial equality, I believe the trend is ever forward.
