How Much Is the ACA ‘Tax’?

Q: How much will the “tax” penalty be for going without health insurance?

A: The minimum assessment will be $695 per person (but no more than $2,085 per family) in 2016, when fully phased in. The amount can be higher depending on income. But there are exemptions for low-income persons and others.

But it will be less to start. The minimum penalty per person will start at $95 in 2014, the first year that the law will require individuals to obtain coverage. And it will rise to $325 the following year.

Starting in 2017, the minimum tax per person will rise each year with inflation. And for children 18 and under, the minimum per-person tax is half of that for adults.

3.1 million young adults - 62,000 Americans with pre-existing health conditions

Those are the big winners today!

About 3.1 million young adults gained health insurance through a provision that allows them to stay on their parents' policies until age 26. In addition, nearly 62,000 Americans with pre-existing health conditions, who would otherwise be uninsurable, gained coverage through the government's Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans (PCIPs). Those enrolled will be able to stay in the program until it expires in 2014. At that time, they'll be eligible to buy health insurance through state-based insurance marketplaces scheduled to be up and running by fall 2013.

Cuyahoga County GOP lying about jobs at NASA (cross post GD)

Cuyahoga County GOP says jobs in jeopardy at NASA Glenn, NASA denies claims

CLEVELAND - Jobs at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland are being moved to other facilities. That is according to the Cuyahoga County Republican Party. The group says the moves will have devastating effects on the local economy.

The party says this move will not be officially announced until after this year's presidential elections.

A news release from the Cuyahoga County Republican Party said they've confirmed through several sources “the transfer of most research and developmental activities related to manned spaceflight from Glenn Research Center to other NASA facilities.”

NASA denies the claims.

“NASA is not transferring human spaceflight research and development activities from the Glenn Research Center. In fact, under the ambitious U.S. space exploration plan, President Obama is carrying out, funding for Glenn increases by $17 million next year," NASA Press Secretary Lauren Worley said in a statement.

Unbelievable the lengths the GOP will go to discourage people. This is an attempt to scare voters from voting for the President.

Romney to give his biggest fan a new truck

Perhaps no one has logged more miles supporting Mitt Romney's 2012 bid than Jim Wilson, a 70-year-old retired insurance salesman from Virginia whose beat-up 1998 GMC pickup decorated with American flags and massive "Romney for President" signs has been a ubiquitous presence outside campaign events for months.

Last Wednesday, Wilson's truck caught fire along a Pennsylvania highway as he was driving to catch up with the candidate for events this week, destroying it and most of Wilson's clothes and other belongings. But thanks to the Romney campaign, Wilson won't lose his status as the presumptive GOP nominee's most devoted groupie.

Romney will present Wilson with a new set of wheels at an event in Virginia on Wednesday: a 2003 Chevy pickup that the campaign purchased and plans to loan to Wilson until November, as first reported by Michael Barbaro of the New York Times.

Wilson's profane humor and summer uniform of short-shorts and white knee-high socks have made him one of the more colorful members of the Romney entourage—though Wednesday's event will mark the first time Romney has publicly acknowledged his biggest fan.

What goes down, will come back up

We have all been excited the last several days about the prospect of cheaper gasoline prices in the months ahead.

Well, Not so fast. What goes down, usually comes back up...

Oil rises on better US manufacturing, housing data

The price of oil rose on some welcome news about U.S. manufacturing production and home sales.

Benchmark crude rose $1.29 to $80.64 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, gained 61 cents to $93.63 per barrel in London.

The Commerce Department said factories received more orders in May for long-lasting manufactured goods such as heavy machinery, computers and communications equipment. Oil and other energy products benefit from stronger manufacturing because they are used to help make and ship goods.

The report helped ease recent concerns about slower factory production in the U.S.

Separately, the National Association of Realtors said that Americans signed more contracts to buy previously occupied homes in May, which matched the fastest pace in two years. It follows other recent data that shows steady improvement in the housing market this year.

"Once again, U.S. economic data is confounding the critics," Price Futures Group oil analyst Phil Flynn said. "Maybe the economy isn't so dreary."

The housing impact at the article...

"The private sector is doing fine"

That one quote is the only thing the GOP can come up with against President Obama.

The run commercial after commercial that simply repeats the phrase over and over. It is annoying at best and as normal for the GOP, completely out of context.

But I suspect they will run this until November unless The President make another "gaff" if you want to portray it as that.

A message from Martin Sheen re: Sherrod Brown

Hello Friend,

I’m Martin Sheen. You know me best as an actor, but I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and early on in life decided I wouldn't sit on the sidelines when it came to issues of economic and social justice. When a true leader crosses my path -- one who doesn’t just talk about progressive values but embodies them -- I act. And I hope you will, too, by supporting Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown.

Sherrod is dedicated to the middle class, to seniors, and to women and families. He doesn’t work for the special interests -- he works for the middle class people who make Ohio great.

Sherrod needs our help -- and this country needs the progressive voice of Sherrod Brown. This month, his campaign needs to raise $500,000. Click here to contribute today.

We place a sacred trust in our elected officials. We expect them to stand up with courage and conviction for the things we believe in.

That’s exactly what Sherrod has done. He showed up on Day One a fighting progressive who cared first, last, and always about Ohio’s working families -- and that’s the man he remains today.

Sherrod has already seen $10 million spent against him in his race. He needs to raise $500,000 this month to fight back. Can you contribute $10 or more to support him?

I played a President on TV who could change the debate with a single speech. But in real life, it doesn’t work that way. In real life, it’s up to progressive fighters to protect the vulnerable, hold the special interests accountable, and defeat a right-wing agenda so radical no screenwriter could conceive it.

Sherrod is one of those fighters. I hope I can count on you to join me in standing with him.

Thank you,

Martin Sheen

It was Rubio before it wasn't Rubio before it was Rubio

Romney says Marco Rubio being 'thoroughly vetted' as possible VP

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Mitt Romney on Tuesday called reports that his campaign was not vetting conservative rising star Marco Rubio for the vice presidential nomination "entirely false," and said his campaign is indeed vetting the Florida senator.

"Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted as part of our process," Romney told reporters in a hastily-organized statement to the media before a stop at an ice cream shop.

The Romney campaign has jealously guarded information about its vice presidential selection process, with Romney repeating a familiar refrain whenever questions about the number two spot on the ticket are asked: I've got nothing for ya.

Today's statement was the first time Romney or his campaign have officially confirmed that his campaign was vetting anyone.
