Morgan Freeman Spells Out Exactly What’s At Stake This Election
“Our lives quite literally depend on it,” the actor warns in a new ad for the NAACP.
By Lee Moran

Actor Morgan Freeman explains exactly what’s on the line in the 2020 election in a new ad for the NAACP.

Freeman warns — as the narrator of the spot that Rachel Maddow premiered on her MSNBC show Friday — that “our lives quite literally depend” on voting.

“It wasn’t long ago that people were beaten and even killed to obtain the sacred power each of you have today, the power to vote,” he says. “And right now your vote is more critical than ever.”

“This election is about you and me, your family and my family, our planet, and our democracy in its entirety,” Freeman continues. “With our votes, we, the people, can begin to overwhelm the unjust political and economic systems that favor profits over people and elect leaders who will take us forward.”

“Brothers and sisters, go vote,” Freeman concludes the clip. “Our lives quite literally depend on it.”

Maddow hailed the spot.

“It’s really good,” she said. “This is a stressful time, I know, but it is an inspiring time too, which is why this is exactly what I needed to see tonight.”

Trump's Rallies Are Backfiring And Making Joe Biden More Popular

Biden leads Trump in Texas and Georgia

Trump’s Rallies Are Backfiring And Making Joe Biden More Popular

Trump’s multiple rallies a day aren’t helping his standing in the election, but they are keeping Joe Biden very popular.

From a new Fox News Poll released on Friday evening, “Biden has a net +11 personal rating: 55 percent view him favorably vs. 44 percent unfavorably. For Trump, 44 percent view him positively and 55 percent negatively, putting him underwater by 11 points. Moreover, 48 percent have a “strongly” unfavorable opinion of him compared to 34 percent for Biden.”

Trump has been holding rallies daily ever since he got out of the hospital with the coronavirus, but his approval rating remains stuck at 44%, which perfectly matches up with the percentage of the overall support that he gets in the Fox News Poll.

A president who is doing multiple rallies a day around the country should be seeing an improving their standing in the election, but Trump is stuck where he has been for months.

Donald Trump’s vote ceiling appears to be 42%-44%.

The big difference between 2020 and 2016 is that Joe Biden is popular. Donald Trump’s endless attacks and rallies aren’t damaging Biden’s popularity. In fact, they seem to be helping Biden.

The more Donald Trump talks, the more he denies realities of the coronavirus pandemic and reminds the majority of voters why they should not vote for him.

Belgium Locks Down to Keep Hospitals from Collapse

I wish President Biden would do this. I fear there are too many dumbasses in this country to follow any rules related to the 'rona.

President Trump celebrated reports that Joe Biden wasn’t driving up Black voter turnout, framing it in a way that made it seem like he was happy about the disenfranchisement.

Said Trump: “The Black vote is not turning out for him. They’re not showing up to vote and others aren’t either.”

McConnell Won’t Take Up Relief Package In Lame Duck
October 30, 2020 at 3:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says he expects Congress to move another coronavirus relief package “right at the beginning” of 2021, breaking from Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who told reporters Thursday she wants to get a deal in the lame-duck session, The Hill reports.

Said McConnell: “We probably need to do another package, certainly more modest than the $3 trillion Nancy Pelosi package. I think that’ll be something we’ll need to do right at the beginning of the year.”

Eric Boehlert: America turns on Trump -- we're not "polarized" after all

America turns on Trump — we're not "polarized" after all
Another media myth busted
Eric Boehlert

As Trump's failed presidency limps into the final stages of its first term and he trails Joe Biden by historic margins, a key media myth is being burst right before our eyes. Instead of the deeply "polarized," bitterly divided country the press insists we have become, where every hot-button issue divides the nation by a razor-thin 51-49 margin, we're seeing swelling momentum of agreement. Poll after poll confirms the tide is moving away from Trump and away from the conservative agenda in America.

Picking up the electoral energy that was ignited during the 2018 midterm elections, a wide coalition of voters are not only opposing Trump, but are rejecting Republican initiatives across the board in large numbers. A silent majority of sorts, this partnership is often ignored by the press, which seems wed to the idea of portraying America as being impossibly divided in the age of Trump. In truth, Trump is helping to unite the country.

snip//

This rejection of Republican ideas is across the board:

• Two thirds of Americans (66 percent) say that civilians need to have the power to sue police officers to hold them accountable for misconduct and excessive use of force, even if that makes the officers’ jobs more difficult.

• 62 percent said in a spring 2020 survey that the federal government is doing too little to protect animals and their habitats.

• 72 percent agree that climate change is happening. (Just 12 percent do not agree.)

• Roughly two-thirds of Americans say the federal government is doing too little to reduce the effects of climate change.

• More than two-thirds of Americans now support same-sex marriage -- record-high numbers. That tally jumped nine points in just three years.

• An overwhelming majority of U.S. adults (91 percent) say marijuana should be legal for medical use, while 59 percent think it should be legal for recreational purposes.

• Just 19 percent of Americans think immigration is a bad thing for the country.

The media obsession with the "polarized" narrative over the years has helped normalize Trump's extremist behavior. So often viewed through the prism of deep partisan divide, there's a suggestion that Democrats urgently oppose Trump simply because he's a Republican, and that any Republican in the Oval Office would be viewed the same way Trump is by his political foes.

Lost in that "polarized" translation is the central fact that Trump's behavior is extreme, undemocratic, and dangerous as he spends months, for example, aggressively trying to undercut public faith in elections.

Trump hasn’t torn America in two equal halves. Most of the country still has its senses.

Coronavirus Infections Surging In Every Swing State

Coronavirus Infections Surging In Every Swing State
October 30, 2020 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Coronavirus cases are surging in every competitive state before Election Day, offering irrefutable evidence against President Trump’s closing argument that the pandemic is nearly over and restrictions are no longer necessary,” the Washington Post reports.

“In the 13 states deemed competitive by the Cook Political Report, the weekly average of new cases reported daily has jumped 45 percent over the past two weeks.”

Polls show Trump is losing ground where the coronavirus is surging

Polls show Trump is losing ground where the coronavirus is surging
Will the latest Covid-19 wave seal Trump’s fate in the election?
By Julia Belluz@juliaoftoronto Oct 29, 2020, 2:30pm EDT

The third — and largest — coronavirus wave is hitting the US just in time for the presidential election, with surges in key Midwestern swing states. Numerous polls suggest voters may be taking their pandemic pain and panic with them to the ballot boxes in these places: President Donald Trump isn’t just down in national polls — he’s faring especially poorly in battlegrounds where infection rates are spiking.

Over the last two weeks, the coronavirus case count in Wisconsin — where Trump won by a single percentage point in 2016 — has jumped 36 percent, to an average of 4,200 new infections per day. And that’s just among the people who’ve been diagnosed. The test positivity rate in the state is a staggering 28 percent, according to Covidexitstrategy.org, and health officials have already had to transform the state fair park into a field hospital to manage the crush of new patients.

The situation is nearly as worrisome in Michigan: Cases there have risen 73 percent in the last two weeks, to 2,600 per day, while the number of Covid-19 patients in hospital has more than doubled since the end of September. It’s another swing state, which Trump won by an even tinier margin — of 0.3 — in 2016.

In these places, and the states around them, the majority of voters apparently prefer Biden. That has mostly been the state of things for some time, but is perhaps even clearer as Election Day approaches. “Biden is doing well everywhere — but his leads are even more solid in places where the coronavirus is hitting the hardest,” said Mike Greenfield, the chief executive officer of Change Research, who has been tracking the impact of the pandemic on voter decision-making.
