UPDATE 1-Microsoft names next operating system 'Windows 10'

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/30/microsoft-windows-idUSL2N0RV1RF20140930

Huh ?

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp announced its 'Windows 10' operating system on Tuesday, skipping a number, to replace the largely unpopular Windows 8 from two years ago.

The next version of Microsoft's flagship product, which still runs the vast majority of personal computers, is aimed at recapturing the lucrative business market, which generally ignored the new-look Windows 8.

Windows 10 will be "our greatest enterprise platform ever," said Terry Myerson, Microsoft's head of operating systems, at an event in San Francisco.

He said the new Windows, long known by the project name 'Threshold' internally, represented a new type of system for the company. The name represented that leap, he said.

Linux, Mac OS X, Security Matters

A serious security issue with the Bash shell – a major component of both most UNIX-like operating systems – has been discovered, with significant implications for computer security worldwide.

The issue is present in all versions of the Bash scripting language up to version 4.3, which effects a majority of Linux machines, and the entirety of computers running OS X. and can see an attacker exploiting this issue to launch their own code.

Curious about how it works and how to protect yourself? Read on for more information.

What Is Bash?

Bash (standing for Bourne Again Shell) is the default command line interpreter used on most Linux and BSD distributions, in addition to OS X. It is used as a method of launching programs, using system utilities and interacting with the underlying operating system by launching commands.

I'm the same way

A woman has never hit me. Of course, I never have been a horribly sexist ******* and am not one now. That probably has something to do with it (being hit for being a jerk such as touching buttocks, etc), as well as not associating with violent people, period.

Microsoft Indonesia president: Windows 9 will be free to Windows 8 owners

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2688652/microsoft-indonesia-president-windows-9-will-be-free-to-windows-8-owners.html

We already know quite a bit about Windows 9 (or whatever Microsoft decides to call it). Thanks to the president of Microsoft Indonesia, we might now know another detail about Microsoft’s upcoming OS—its price.

According to Indonesian news site Detik.com (via BGR), Andreas Diantoro, the president of Microsoft Indonesia, confirms that Windows 9 will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users.

Why it matters: Users are becoming more accustomed to free operating system updates, given the fact that even major iOS, Android, and OS X updates are gratis. And after the negative reception Windows 8 received, Microsoft has some added incentive to earn back its users’ trust. With that in mind, Windows 9 is just as much a chance to change the tenor of discussion surrounding Windows as it is a new version of the OS.

Taking cues from Windows 8.1, OS X

According to BGR, Windows 9 will be available as a free download, much like Apple’s updates to OS X–and much like Windows 8.1, which was a free update provided to Windows 8 and Windows RT users through the Windows Store.
