James Craig, who brutalized BLM protesters as Police Chief, says he supports Canadian truckers

(Detroit Metro Times) Oh, the hypocrisy.

James Craig, the former chief of the Detroit Police Department who is currently running as a Republican candidate for governor of Michigan, said he supports the Canadian anti-vaccination protesters who have paralyzed travel across the border with their blockade of trucks.

"I stand with the truckers," Craig said in a statement issued Friday. "I support all working people who are standing up for personal freedom."

It seems that if Craig is a defender of the right to protest, he is selective in his support, however.

In 2020, DPD responded with a crackdown when Black Lives Matter protesters, led by local group Detroit Will Breathe, took to the streets of Detroit as part of the wave of protests across the nation against police brutality, following the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George of Floyd. ..................(more)

Paranoia and alarmism: Canada truckers' 'intelligence reports' hint at mindset

Paranoia and alarmism: Canada truckers’ ‘intelligence reports’ hint at mindset
Documents compiled by protest organisers give a glimpse into a conspiracy theory-drenched outlook

(Guardian UK) Leaders of the Ottawa “Freedom Convoy” protest have warned fellow protesters that the risk of violence is growing, amid speculation the police may move to disperse the nearly two-week occupation of Canada’s capital.

Daily “intelligence reports” compiled by protest leaders and seen by the Guardian – as well as public comments by the organisers – have grown increasingly alarmist in recent days.

While the reports include misinformation, and should not be taken as credible intelligence, they nevertheless offer an insight on the occupiers’ conspiratorial mindset.

Thursday’s report warns that “the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) has directed that Freedom Convoy 2022 be dispersed by not [sic] later that [sic] Saturday, 12 February 2022.”

In Canada, politicians cannot direct police operations, but the increasing paranoia of the protesters present a worrying change in tone. ..............(more)

End of Ambassador Bridge trucker protest could be in sight as one lane opens

( Detroit Free Press) Less than two hours before a hearing Friday asking the Ontario Superior Court chief judge to order an end to the week-long protest, demonstrators began moving trucks to open a single lane on the Ambassador Bridge.

It was a sign, they said, of good faith.

Windsor officials had been saying they hoped the protest was resolved soon but, if necessary, they have the police reinforcements to end it. .........(more)

Don't you....forget about us: An ode to my fellow GenXers

20 facts about Generation X
Gen X may be the rarest demographic cohort, but they've got some pretty bangin' traits that make them one of a kind

After Baby Boomers but before Millennials is Generation X, the people born between the period of 1965 and 1980 and with an age range of 41 to 56 who were the first to get hip to the internet, wore parachute pants, and who may have worried Y2K was going to ruin the world.

But there's more to this category of humans than '90s references. Check out some things you may not have realized about the inarguably dopest social construct.

1. Generation X was named after a book

The Baby Boomers were the first named generation, after the kids who arrived — a literal baby boom — when their parents began to settle down after World War II. Generation X didn't have a war that sparked it. Instead, it was words: Author Douglas Coupland's 1991 book "Generation X: Tales for An Accelerated Culture". The novel about disenfranchised post-Boomers struck a nerve and the name stuck.

2. Generation X also had something to do with Billy Idol

Even though Coupland popularized the term for a social group, he wasn't the first to coin the phrase. A book named "Generation X" by Jane Deverson and Charles Hamblett was published in 1964 and examined British youth culture — at the time, people who were under 25. The tome found its way into the hands of a young Billy Idol, who went on to form his first band. He named it Generation X.

3. Generation X is also known as "the forgotten generation"

It's because Baby Boomers and Millennials tend to get all the romanticized media attention, leaving Generation X comparatively ignored. ..............(more)

Frontier passenger accuses woman of sticking him with needle to steal DNA

A Frontier Airlines flight from the Big Apple to Orlando made an emergency landing after a crazed passenger reportedly yelled that a woman sitting behind him was sticking him with a needle to steal his DNA.

Flight 1335 was on its way from LaGuardia Airport to Florida late Wednesday when the man made the shocking claim and began threatening fellow passengers – including a baby – and said he’d kill everyone on board, WTVD reported.

Savannah Figueroa, one of the passengers, told WRAL that the lunatic “was really loud and obnoxious from the beginning.”

“The passenger that was sitting behind him was a lady and her autistic son … so I guess he kept getting poked and touched from behind and he started freaking out and claiming that ‘these people keep putting hands on me, they’re trying to stick me with needles, they’re trying to collect my DNA,’” Figueroa told the news outlet. .............(more)

Windsor mayor signals police may soon 'physically remove' Ambassador Bridge protesters

Ambassador Bridge links Detroit, MI, USA and Windsor, ON, Canada. A quarter of all trade between the two countries crosses that bridge

(Detroit Free Press) After four days of truck protests that shut down the Ambassador Bridge, one of North American's biggest commercial gateways, an end may be in sight.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens signaled Thursday that he hoped for a peaceful resolution but was preparing to use police reinforcements to remove the protesters, who he said were trespassing, if they did not disperse on their own soon.

"A short time ago," he said, "Windsor City Council met and had authorized that an injunction be sought from Superior Court to bring about an end to this illegal occupation."

He was joined by business association representatives, and in clear terms said the protest "must come to an end." In addition, speaking directly to anyone thinking of joining the group to reinforce, he said: "You are not welcome here."

In addition, Matt Moroun, chairman of the Detroit International Bridge Co., which owns the privately held span, said the blockade "cannot continue any longer." .............(more)

More college students are dropping out during Covid. It could get worse

(Guardian UK) College took a back seat the moment Izzy B called the suicide hotline.

Izzy, 18, had spent her senior year of high school online. Then she’d gone straight to online summer school at a local community college near Denver. When in-person classes there started this past fall, she was glad to be back in the classroom and finally experiencing some real college life.

But after Omicron forced classes back online late in the semester, Izzy, who was living with her parents, felt overwhelmed by loneliness; she struggled to focus on her schoolwork and enjoy life.

“We’re at this age where we’re supposed to be hanging out with our friends and socializing,” she said. “It definitely affected my mental health.”

....(snip)....

Thousands of other students around the country are leaving college – some because of mental health issues, others for financial or family reasons. Educators worry that many have left for good.

Of the 2.6 million students who started college in fall 2019, 26.1%, or roughly 679,000, didn’t come back the next year, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. That was an increase of two percentage points over the previous year, and the highest share of students not returning for their sophomore year since 2012. The dropout spike was even more startling for community college students like Izzy, with an increase of about 3.5 percentage points. .............(more)

Drunk and maskless passenger hurls the N-word at Delta flight attendant - then gets fired: report

An employee of an Omaha software company Buildertrend has been fired for allegedly using the N-word on an airline flight, the Lincoln Journal Star reports.

Passengers on the Delta flight from Omaha to New York say a group of people who'd been drinking boarded the plane and continued to be rowdy, many of whom had masks with the Buildertrend logo. Laura Austin, who was on the flight, said a Black flight attendant went to the back of the plane to talk with the passengers but later came back “very shaken.”

“She told us that she asked some people to put their masks on, and someone called her the N-word,” Austin said.

In a statement this Wednesday, Buildertrend CEO Dan Houghton apologized and said the incident is being investigated by "internal and external parties to learn as much as possible so that we can take appropriate action." ...............(more)
