James Craig acknowledges possible fraud in signature gathering for his petition

(Detroit Free Press) LANSING — The gubernatorial campaign of former Detroit Police Chief James Craig has acknowledged possible fraud by signature gatherers for his nominating petition, but says Craig's name should still appear on Michigan's August Republican primary ballot.

"Chief Craig in no way condones any act of the handful of circulators who may well have injured his campaign and interfered with the constitutional rights of voters who support him or other candidates," Kansas City, Missouri, attorney Edward Greim, representing the Craig campaign, said in a May 9 letter to the Bureau of Elections, obtained by the Free Press.

The "allegation that a handful of circulators defrauded the Craig campaign and Michigan voters is troubling, (but) the proof will ultimately be found in a careful comparison between petition and qualified voter file (or master card) signatures."

Craig's campaign submitted 21,735 signatures, meaning that if 6,736 were rejected, his petition to get on the primary ballot would come up short. Craig was seen as the early front-runner in the GOP race to take on Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in November. ...........(more)

Cities Mobilize for Roe Reversal by Strengthening Abortion Safe Havens

(Bloomberg CityLab) City leaders are mobilizing after a draft U.S. Supreme Court decision was leaked that would overturn U.S. abortion rights. If that draft becomes an official ruling to reverse the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in the coming months, states will hold the ultimate power to ban abortions within their own boundaries.

But especially in blue states that could see a deluge of out-of-state abortion seekers, some city leaders are preparing to support local abortion clinics through funding, coordination and security measures.

Between existing abortion restrictions and the lack of available clinics, cities in places like California and New York have already served as havens for abortion seekers traveling from elsewhere. The task for local leaders now is to establish stronger connections between cities where abortion would be banned and local clinics in cities more friendly to abortions, said Sarah Johnson, the executive director of Local Progress, a coalition of local officials that organizes around progressive policies.

For example, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, Texas is among the states with a so-called “trigger law” that will make abortion illegal 30 days after the court ruling. So Austin City Councilmember Vanessa Fuentes is working now to ensure there’s infrastructure in place to get Texan women to New Mexico, Austin’s nearest neighbor that is not likely to ban abortions. ...............(more)

White nationalists get religion: On the far-right fringe, Catholics and racists forge a movement

White nationalists get religion: On the far-right fringe, Catholics and racists forge a movement
Nick Fuentes' racist "groyper" movement is building a coalition with far-right Catholics. They have a plan

Last Sunday, as pro-choice supporters reacted to the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that will likely overturn Roe v. Wade, a series of videos shot in lower Manhattan went viral. In one, a group of young men stood before an arched wooden doorway at the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, reciting the Rosary while protesters demonstrated outside the church gates. In their center was a young man wearing an America First hat and an FDNY fleece, closing his eyes as he prayed. By that afternoon, the video had been shared on social media by far-right Republican Reps. Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene, who praised the men as "heroes" "defending their churches against the abortionist horde."

In two other videos taken the same day at the same location, the man in the America First hat heckled protesters, shouting from the church steps, "I am the people. The people have decided, the court has decided. You lose. You have no choice. Not your body, your choice. Your body is mine and you're having my baby."

The man was not, as the New York City Fire Department quickly pointed out, a firefighter. Nor was he merely a devout Catholic. Rather, he was a right-wing activist affiliated with white nationalist wunderkind Nick Fuentes' gleefully racist and antisemitic America First/"groyper" movement, which at its third annual America First Political Action Conference (AFPAC) this February drew widespread condemnation for its glorification of Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Fuentes' praise of Hitler and the call by one speaker, a state senator from Arizona, to build "gallows" to hang political enemies.

On a popular groyper livestream show Sunday night, host and movement leader Dalton Clodfelter said he recognized the man in the videos and called him to join the show. As journalist and Western States Center senior fellow Nick Martin reported, Clodfelter said the man had made "a really bold statement today and it's going to be heard by a lot of people." The man claimed that many of the other praying men who assembled that afternoon were also groypers, described the demonstrators he'd been heckling as "demonic creatures" and "animals" and said that one Black protester should be "enslaved" or "shot." "Whatever church they're going to attack next," he pledged, "we'll be there, and we'll crush them." ........................(more)

Leonard Pitts Jr.: Reclaiming 'liberal' and 'woke.' Democrats, stop letting the right frame the deba

By Leonard Pitts | The Miami Herald
| May 8, 2022, 7:00 a.m.

So let’s talk about That Word.

Meaning the word the political left was using to define itself until the political right got hold of it and made it an object of ridicule. The word that quickly became unusable, even faintly embarrassing.

No, the word is not “woke.”

It is, rather, “liberal,” a word that, linguist Geoffrey Nunberg argues in his 2006 book, “Talking Right,” was “already associated with profligacy, spinelessness, malevolence, masochism, elitism, fantasy, anarchy, idealism, softness, irresponsibility and sanctimoniousness” by the late 1970s as a result of white backlash to Black progress, the national schism over Vietnam and the perceived failures of the Great Society.

Then Ronald Reagan piled on. In 1988, he — soon to be followed by George H.W. Bush — dubbed it “the L-Word,” i.e., unsayable in polite company. Together, they conducted a master class in how, through relentless ridicule, a self-definition could be weaponized against those who chose it. Democratic leaders soon began refusing the label outright or accepting it only with prickly reluctance. The left was forced into a defensive crouch from which it has never quite emerged. ............(more)

U.S. drug overdose deaths reached all-time high in 2021, CDC says

(NBC News) More than 107,600 Americans died from drug overdoses last year, the highest annual death toll on record, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

Overdose deaths increased 15 percent in 2021, up from an estimated 93,655 fatalities the year prior, according to a report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which collects data on a range of health topics, including drug use.

While the total number of deaths reached record highs, the increase appeared to slow compared to the change seen from 2019 to 2020, when overdose deaths rose 30 percent, according to the report. ...............(more)

How We Converted to a Cooperative--and How You Can, Too

How We Converted to a Cooperative—and How You Can, Too

(YES! Magazine) The healthiest and happiest companies in the world are democracies.

At Louder Than Ten, the project management training company that I co-founded more than 13 years ago, we’ve seen this firsthand. In the more than 13 years that we’ve been working with digital product studios, agencies, and other creative teams, we’ve noticed a pattern. The more companies involve their workers, the healthier their operations are.

In 2021, we decided to put this theory to the test and make the ultimate commitment to workplace democracy. We became a worker-owned cooperative.

Why Become a Worker-Owned Cooperative?

As a society, we fight for democracy in government but settle for dictatorships in our workplaces, the place where we spend 70%–80% of our waking hours. Companies shamelessly monitor their team’s movements and actions in the name of “productivity.” They use time-scheduling software that dates back to a slave-owning family. They deny workers bathroom breaks. They make health care professionals work through a global pandemic without paid sick days.

In short, many workplaces treat people more like economic units than human beings. Even “cushy” jobs embrace toxic hustle culture and lay people off the second things go south in the company. ...............(more)

The Dazzling New Star Who Has Totally Upended Men's Tennis

In August 2021, my wife and I took my parents to the U.S. Open, as we do every year. While we took our seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium, I apologized to them because it appeared we were going to see a series of dud matches. In particular, I was disappointed that Stefanos Tsitsipas, one of my favorite players, was playing some teenager from Spain ranked outside of the top 50, and was obviously going to devour this kid like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park going after Donald Gennaro. Like many of my tennis predictions, this turned out to be hilariously wrong. That kid was Carlos Alcaraz, and by the end of the first set, which he won 6–3, the crowd was on his side.* Tsitsipas won the second, and Alcaraz the third in a thrilling tiebreaker, and then suddenly everything appeared to fall apart as Tsitsipas dominated the fourth set, winning it 6–0. The writing was on the wall, the fat lady was singing, and the T-Rex was readying his knife and fork, but Alcaraz appeared not to care. Over the course of a gutsy fifth set, Alcaraz found his best tennis when it counted, and won the match in a stunning tiebreak, cracking winners, playing drop shot/passing shot combos, and flying around the court as if he hadn’t been playing for four hours.

....(snip)....

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia—Carlito to his friends—is the most exciting new player in men’s tennis since his countryman Rafael Nadal launched his rivalry against Roger Federer in 2004. Like Nadal, Alcaraz graduated to the big leagues at the Miami Masters. Unlike Nadal, he won the tournament, taking out quality opponents (Caspar Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz), a Grand Slam champion (Marin Cilic), and poor Stefanos Tsitsipas to hoist the trophy on April 3. This past week, in Madrid, Alcaraz did even better, becoming the only player ever to beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the same clay court event, and totally dominating world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the final for good measure. But even that is underselling what Alcaraz achieved this week. Not only did he beat the top three players in the world on consecutive days; Nadal and Djokovic are the greatest clay court players alive, and his victories over Djokovic and Zverev came after sustaining a bad fall and ankle injury against Nadal. .....................(more)

Detroit officials break ground on 22-acre park on the city's west riverfront

(Detroit Metro Times) Plans for the highly-anticipated Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park on the Detroit Riverfront are finally moving forward. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, partnering organizations, and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan broke ground for the park on Tuesday afternoon.

The 22-acre park was first announced back in 2018 and is expected to open in 2024. It will replace the West Riverfront Park at West Jefferson Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard and feature a playground, a "Water Wonderland," sports house, and a huge lawn for outdoor events called the DTE Foundation Hill.

Most importantly, in our humble opinion, are the giant bear and otter-shaped slides that will be located at the park’s Delta Dental play garden.

Delta Dental of Michigan donated $5 million for the animal-themed playground, which will also include play equipment shaped like a dragon and a beaver. We can’t promise we won’t head straight for the 20-foot bear slide when the park finally opens. Sorry kids, you’ll have to wait your turn. .............(more)

The QAnon Queen Told Followers They Didn't Need to Pay Bills. It Didn't End Well.

The QAnon Queen Told Followers They Didn’t Need to Pay Bills. It Didn’t End Well.
The QAnon Queen of Canada told her followers to stop paying their electricity and water bills because she declared them free. But now the utility companies are calling.

By Mack Lamoureux
TORONTO, ON

Followers of a QAnon influencer who's convinced some Canadians she’s the true Queen of Canada are saying their utilities are being cut off because they were told by their sovereign that they no longer had to pay bills.

One woman has repeatedly told her fellow QAnon Queen followers she’s “stopped paying hydro, water, natural gas, property taxes, line of credit, and my credit cards.” She pushes hard on her fellow true believers to join her in not paying their bills and chastising those who continue to pay.

“The more who do it, the quicker we can be free of enslavement,” she wrote on one of the group’s Telegram channels. “Those still living in fear are making it harder to get out. Don’t be afraid, because we’re in this together.”

Many, many others have posted that they, too, have stopped paying their bills after hearing that Romana Didulo—a QAnon influencer who has them convinced she’s running Canada behind the scenes—made a decree that electricity is free. Several have posted their power has been shut off or that they were on the verge of having it shut off and relented to finally paying. ..............(more)
