Mother Jones magazine gives us the Antonin Scalia Insult Generator!

Antonin Scalia didn't mince words in his dissenting opinion on Friday's Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. The conservative justice called his colleague Anthony Kennedy's opinion for the majority "as pretentious as its content is egotistic," adding that it diminished "this Court's reputation for clear thinking and sober analysis." Over the last three decades, he has peppered his dissents (for the most part) with put-downs of his colleagues, plaintiffs, or whatever it was he was angry about on the day of writing. And now, with Mother Jones' handy Scalia Insult Generator™, you can create your own!

Gov. Chris Christie’s Phony Truth-Telling

From the NYT editorial board:

It is part of the legend Mr. Christie has carefully cultivated for many years, with startling success. He is described as “brash” and “bold,” with a certain rough charisma that his political opponents just cannot handle. “I get accused a lot of times of being too blunt and too direct and saying what’s on my mind just a little bit too loudly,” he says in the first video for his presidential campaign, showing him with a selected group of adoring voters.

It’s fundamentally nonsense. There are lines between brash and belligerent, between open and obnoxious, and, most important, between “telling it like it is” and not telling the truth. Mr. Christie crosses those lines all the time, as Tom Moran, the editorial page editor of The Star-Ledger of Newark, documented in a blistering column about Mr. Christie’s “catalog of lies.”

and

Expect to see a lot of Mr. Christie at those phony “town hall” meetings, staged with selected supporters. You will hear a lot about his common touch, his “straight talk” and his love for Bruce Springsteen.

It’s a smoke screen. Look behind it at the governor whose own constituents say by an overwhelming majority that he has done a bad job, should not run for the White House and would make a bad president.

Too much to post here, but they go into good detail on his almost pathological need to lie about everything.

Norway is Building a Highway for Bees

Would you tell the tiny creatures responsible for pollinating crops that provide 35 percent of the world’s food to hit the road? The answer is yes in Norway — the AFP reports that Oslo is creating a “bee highway” to help protect the increasingly embattled pollinators.

The highway is being built as a kind of bee-friendly corridor that encourages places where bees like to both live and feed. The AFP reports that “feeding stations” filled with marigolds, sunflowers and other flowers beloved by bees are being planted to “give the insects safe passage through the city.” Using public and private resources, the highway is the first of its kind.

By building bee havens on rooftops and balconies, writes The Local, Oslo hopes to direct bee traffic from east to west, giving them nectar-rich feeding sources to help offset the stresses of urban life. The plan is being spearheaded by BiBy, an urban bee conservation group that has also set up an online map showing Oslo residents where more plants are needed.

The honey highway is being built as communities around the world are trying to figure out the best way to preserve and encourage disappearing pollinators. It’s a growing crisis in the United States, too: The Wall Street Journal’s Tennille Tracy writes that new data shows that 40 percent of America’s honeybees died in a one-month period ending in April.

O'Malley just hired Dave Hamrick (Obama's 2008 campaign adviser in NH/SC)

Hamrick

was a regional field director in Iowa for Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign, worked at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2004, and was the national political director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2005 when then-Representative Rahm Emanuel led the group’s efforts to reclaim a congressional majority.

He worked on grassroots efforts for Mr. Obama in New Hampshire and South Carolina during the primaries in 2008, and later in Michigan and Pennsylvania during the general election. He went on to found the group New Partners Consulting with Obama campaign alumni.

In a statement, Mr. O’Malley, who has been modeling his himself as an insurgent outsider, called Mr. Hamrick the “perfect choice.”

“He brings a tremendous amount of political experience and a strong grasp for Iowa politics,” Mr. O’Malley, whose hopes are banking heavily on beating expectations in the caucuses state, said. “Plus, he shares my admiration for our nation’s poet laureate, Bruce Springsteen, and has seen him in concert more than 50 times.”
