California Lawmakers OK Highest Minimum Wage
Update at 5:38 PM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The Latest on a proposal to raise California's minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022 (all times local):
2:35 p.m.
California lawmakers have approved the nation's highest statewide minimum wage of $15 an hour to take effect by 2022.
The legislation passed Thursday now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who is expected to sign it into law after previously working out the plan with labor unions.
Democrats who control both legislative chambers hailed the increase as a boon to more than 2 million of California's poorest workers and an example to the nation as it struggles with a growing gap between rich and poor.
The Assembly passed SB3 with a 48-26 vote. The Senate followed, 26-12. The increases would start with a boost from $10 to $10.50 on Jan. 1. Businesses with 25 or fewer employees would have an extra year to comply.

Nate Silver Defends Torture Methods Used To Make Election Projections

NEWS IN BRIEF March 21, 2016
VOL 52 ISSUE 11 · Politics · Election 2016
NEW YORKResponding to critics who contend that safer and more humane techniques exist to ascertain voters political positions, statistician Nate Silver appeared on several cable news programs Monday to defend the controversial torture methods he uses to project election results.
Its not easy to accurately forecast how a given state or demographic will vote, and sometimes there is simply no other option than enclosing blindfolded voters in a confinement box and blaring loud, continuous music at them to keep them awake for 100 hours or more, said Silver, stressing that he had extracted many crucial responses that helped him correctly predict all 50 states results during the 2012 general election by shackling registered voters from the ceiling in stress positions until they finally divulged the issues that mattered to them most.
What you have to understand is that were working on a highly time-sensitive schedule and need to get these projections right. So, yes, if stripping a second-generation Latino millennial voter naked, forcing him to stand in his own excrement, and then holding back a snarling German shepherd inches from his throat gives us a clearer understanding of where the nation stands on immigration reform, then thats a choice I would gladly make every time.
Silver added that, with the exception of occasionally using pliers to tear out the fingernails of those he suspected of lying to him about their preferred candidate, none of his methods have ever been proven to cause permanent damage.
From The Alan Parsons Project Facebook Page: Trump Forced to No Longer Use "Sirius"
Thank you to the many fans who wrote in about the fact that Donald Trump was using our APP track Sirius as the intro music at his rallies. This was not something we had approved or authorised, and having now written to Trumps lawyer, were pleased to report that they have agreed to pull the song from their playlist at his rallies from now on. If you ever hear it played at Donald Trump events again - please let us know.

Five Cumberland County deputies disciplined in connection with Trump rally assault
By Michael Futch, Staff writer Updated 9 hrs ago
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says it has disciplined five deputies following an investigation arising from a videotaped assault at the March 9 Donald Trump presidential rally at the Crown Coliseum.
News of the disciplinary action came on the same day as allegations of a second assault during the rally surfaced with a second video posted on social media.
A college student from Fayetteville posted the video online that shows him being verbally and possibly physically assaulted while sheriff's deputies are escorting him from the political rally.

Adedayo Adeniyi, 20, a Nigerian who attends East Carolina University in Greenville, has said in interviews with The New York Daily News and the East Carolinian college newspaper that a Trump rally-goer slapped him in the face as authorities led him out of the Crown Coliseum, where the rally was held.
Adeniyi said in the published accounts that he was not protesting when deputies told him he had to go. Adeniyi alleges that deputies randomly targeted and tossed him from the event because he's black.
A Sheriff's Office news release said Wednesday that three deputies were demoted in rank and suspended for five days each without pay "for unsatisfactory performance and for failing to discharge the duties and policies of the Office of Sheriff."

President Barack Obama plans to nominate Merrick Garland, chief judge of the federal appeals court in Washington and one of the most respected jurists in the country, to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat opened by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, according to a White House official and other people familiar with the matter.
Republicans have vowed to obstruct any Obama nominee for Scalias seat. The president plans to announce the nomination at 11 a.m. Washington time in the White House Rose Garden. The people who identified Garland requested anonymity ahead of the presidents announcement.
In a statement earlier Wednesday, Obama said his nominee will be "eminently qualified" to join the nations highest court, has an "unquestionable mastery of law" and "unimpeachable credentials." He asked for a fair hearing and up-or-down vote in the Senate.
"That is what the Constitution dictates, and thats what the American people expect and deserve," the president said.
Garland will be an ideologically moderate nominee who in other contexts would have broad bipartisan appeal. When Obama considered Garland for a high court vacancy in 2010, Senator Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, called the judge "terrific" and said he could be confirmed to the Supreme Court "virtually unanimously."

"Don't Despair. After March 15, Entire Last Half of Elected Delegate Race is Favorable to Bernie..."
https://plus.google.com/+OleOlson/posts/D8EKNtnfnpFDon't despair: After March 15th the entire last half of the elected delegate race is favorable to Bernie #FeelTheBern #PrimaryDay
Clinton won in at least 3 of the states today, but only 50% of the elected delegates will have been determined after everything is counted today. The front half of the #DemocraticPrimary schedule was horribly front loaded with states where Clinton does best, but from here on out, we move on to states where Bernie can win almost everywhere.
