IT’S A BOY! Meet Dallas Zoo's new baby giraffe

The Dallas Zoo has welcomed a leggy, 6-foot-tall baby giraffe, born Sunday, Oct. 26 to first-time mother Chrystal. The energetic male calf weighs about 120 pounds and appears to be healthy. His arrival wasn’t without excitement. Giraffe keepers and the veterinary team had closely monitored the pregnancy, including using ultrasounds, and were prepared. Zoo staffers are now observing to ensure the calf is nursing and meeting appropriate developmental milestones. The calf could go out into the feeding habitat, with limited access, as soon as next week. Special thanks to our giraffe keepers for their photos and video.

Gov. Walker takes the lead in the final Marquette Law School Poll

The final Marquette Law School Poll results before the election were released today. Among registered voters, Gov. Scott Walker has 50%, with Democratic challenger Mary Burke bringing in 43%, with a +/- 3.0% margin of error.

Two weeks ago, the poll had the race tied at 47% to 47% among likely voters.

BREAKING: Court Refuses To Intervene In Case of 40,000 Missing Voters In Georgia

ATLANTA, GEORGIA—On Tuesday, Judge Christopher Brasher of the Fulton County Superior Court denied a petition from civil rights advocates to force Georgia’s Secretary of State to process an estimated 40,000 voter registrations that have gone missing from the public database.

Though early voting is well underway in the state, Judge Brasher called the lawsuit “premature,” and said it was based on “merely set out suspicions and fears that the [state officials] will fail to carry out their mandatory duties.”

Angela Aldridge, an organizer with the group 9 to 5 Atlanta Working Women who has been working to register voters for several months, told ThinkProgress she was “furious” when she learned of the outcome: “That impedes people’s rights,” she said. “People need information before they go out to vote and they don’t even know if they’re registered or not. They were discouraged, upset, kind of frazzled, not really knowing what was going on. What can you even say to people who want to vote but possibly can’t? They might get disengaged and say, ‘Why vote? It doesn’t matter.’ It’s really disheartening.”

The New Georgia Project, who spearheaded the voter registration drive and brought the lawsuit against the state, vowed Tuesday to “continue to pursue all legal avenues available.” But with the election mere days away, there may be little remedy for the tens of thousands of people who submitted all necessary documents, but have still not received a registration card. Four of those impacted voters were present at the court hearing, but were denied the opportunity to testify.

Dr. Francys Johnson, President of the Georgia NAACP, who represented the 40 thousand voters in the court, called the ruling “outrageous.”

“All in all – a republican appointed judge has backed the republican Secretary of State to deny the right to vote to a largely African American and Latino population,” Johnson wrote in a press release.

Scott Walker Runs Ad Supporting Equal Pay After Repealing Wisconsin's Equal Pay Law

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) released an ad on Tuesday in which his female lieutenant governor applauds his support for equal pay for women -- just two years after the governor signed a bill repealing the state's equal pay law.

"Under Scott Walker, workplace discrimination will always be illegal for any reason," Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch says in the ad. "Mary Burke wants to create more opportunities to sue. We want to create more opportunities for women to succeed."

Walker's campaign released the ad soon after recent polls showed him and Burke, his Democratic challenger, in a dead heat, with Burke leading heavily among women.

Burke has criticized Walker for quietly signing a measure in 2012 that repealed Wisconsin's Equal Pay Enforcement Act. The law gave victims of wage discrimination more avenues through which to plead their cases in court.

Google hopes to develop a wristband that would carry out non-invasive blood tests


Google is aiming to diagnose cancers, impending heart attacks or strokes and other diseases, at a much earlier stage than is currently possible.

The company is working on technology that combines disease-detecting nanoparticles, which would enter a patient's bloodstream via a swallowed pill, with a wrist-worn sensor.

The idea is to identify slight changes in the person's biochemistry that could act as an early warning system.

The work is still at an early stage.

Early diagnosis is the key to treating disease. Many cancers, such as pancreatic, are detected only after they have become untreatable and fatal.

There are marked differences between cancerous and healthy tissues.

Google's ambition is to constantly monitor the blood for the unique traces of cancer, allowing diagnosis long before any physical symptoms appear.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson gives $650,000 to Wisconsin GOP as election draws near

Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson has waded into the state's looming Nov. 4 election with a $650,000 contribution to the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

The contribution is listed as having been received Oct. 23. That puts it outside of the reporting window for campaign finance reports due Oct. 27, but the party reported it Sunday as a late contribution, as required.

On the same day as Adelson's donation, Walker's campaign reported receiving a $450,000 late contribution from the Wisconsin GOP.

Adelson, whose personal wealth has been estimated at more than $30 billion, has in recent years emerged as a major player in national elections. He reportedly contributed nearly $150 million to the 2012 elections, on behalf of Republican candidates. The Daily Beast has reported that he is poised to give as much as $100 million in the current elections.

Adelson's six-figure contribution to the Wisconsin GOP was made possible by changes in state law wrought by recent court rulings.

VERNAL, Utah — The smartphone-sized grave marker is nearly hidden in the grass at Rock Point Cemetery. The name printed on plastic-coated paper — Beau Murphy — has been worn away. Only the span of his life remains.

For some reason, one that is not known and may never be, Beau and a dozen other infants died in this oil-booming basin last year. Was this spike a fluke? Bad luck? Or were these babies victims of air pollution fed by the nearly 12,000 oil and gas wells in one of the most energy-rich areas in the country?

Some scientists whose research focuses on the effect of certain drilling-related chemicals on fetal development believe there could be a link.

But just raising that possibility raises the ire of many who live in and around Vernal. Drilling has been an economic driver and part of the fabric of life here since the 1940s. And if all that energy development means the Uintah Basin has a particularly nasty problem with pollution, so be it, many residents say. Don't blame drilling for baby deaths that obituaries indicate were six times higher than the national average last year.
