There should be an annual DU convention.

I was checking this thread out http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025163044

and thought how nice it would be. We could alternate areas of the country, always having it someplace that is not too expensive.

I think someplace warm during the winter for the first one...

SOP of groups particularly safe havens should as specific as possible as to what is OK/Not OK

I think the power to block people and effectively silence them from being able to post in a group is a really negative one around which should be built as many measures to prevent it from coming to that as possible. Obviously some folks will refuse to respect an SOP and they will need to be blocked, I've blocked people myself, but it was clear that they were posting in a way that was against the SOP of the group and refused to stop.

One of the things I think that is essential is that the SOP of groups, particularly safe havens should be as specific as possible as to what behavior is OK and not OK. I know that you can't always anticipate every kind of behavior, but in general I think this is possible. In one of the linked posts, I noted:

I think the LGBT group and BOG group do a very good job of this.

BOG SOP is "A safe haven for members of Democratic Underground who support the president and his policies."

LGBT is "A group for LGBT DUers and allies. All topics of interest to the LGBT community are welcome."

In both cases, if you are intending to post something critical of President Obama or critical of LGBT rights, you know that this is against the SOP and you run the risk of getting blocked. That is very straightforward.

If hosts of a group are not doing a good job of this and are blocking people anyway, I think that is both very unfair and a strongly negative energy that these hosts are creating that really fly in the face of the environment that admins have otherwise created at DU that defaults to letting discussions continue wherever possible.

On the other side of that, I think each block should be reviewed by admins (yes, even the ones I have done) for fairness on both sides. If someone can't seem to stop, for instance, posting in violation of the SOP's of groups, admins might need to deal with that person. On the other side of that, if some group hosts are unfairly blocking people, or the person being blocked didnt have guidance from the SOP that what they were doing was wrong, admins might need to step in there too.

***NOTE: Be sure to read responses to this OP by me as it includes additional important info***

• On the day chief weapons inspectors were to report to the U.N. Security Council on whether Saddam Hussein is disarming, inspection teams returned to Iraq's al-Muthanna chemical weapons installation, where they have been destroying artillery shells and neutralizing four plastic containers filled with mustard gas. They also visited a mineral water plant.

Feb. 19, 2003:

• UNMOVIC inspectors visited at least 10 sites, including an Al Samoud missile site at Abu Ghraib, northwest of Baghdad. Inspectors have tagged several Al Samoud missiles. Indian state minister on rape: Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong

http://m.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/ally-of-indian-pm-says-rape-sometimes-right-sometimes-wrong/article19002421/?service=mobile

A lawmaker from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party has described rape as a social crime, saying “sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong,” in the latest controversial remarks by an Indian politician about rape.

The political leaders of Uttar Pradesh, the state where two cousins aged 12 and 14 were raped and hanged last week, have faced criticism for failing to visit the scene and for accusing the media of hyping the story.

A regional politician from Mr. Modi’s own party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said on Thursday that the crime of rape can only be considered to have been committed if it is reported to police.

“This is a social crime which depends on men and women. Sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong,” said Babulal Gaur, the home minister responsible for law and order in the BJP-run central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Putin Goes On Sexist Rant About Hillary Clinton

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/05/vladimir-putin-hillary-clinton-weak_n_5449851.html

Russian President Vladimir Putin had some choice words for Hillary Clinton during an interview this week, calling the former Secretary of State a "weak" person who's "never been too graceful in her statements."

Putin's comments Tuesday came in response to questions posed by French journalists regarding remarks Clinton reportedly made earlier this year in which she compared the Russian leader's aggression in Ukraine to Adolf Hitler’s tactics in the 1930s.

"It’s better not to argue with women," Putin said, per a transcript of the interview posted online by the Kremlin. "But Ms. Clinton has never been too graceful in her statements. Still, we always met afterwards and had cordial conversations at various international events. I think even in this case we could reach an agreement. When people push boundaries too far, it’s not because they are strong but because they are weak. But maybe weakness is not the worst quality for a woman."

As is often said around these here parts, sexism and homophobia often go hand in hand.

Putin is a piece of garbage.
