As attention turns towards McCain’s memorial, Trump is furiously firing off conspiracy theories and attacks on the media (Hillary’s emails, CNN, Comey, etc). Only a true egomaniac would throw a tantrum to distract from a funeral.

Do you sometimes wish that Trump would get his information from his excellent intel agencies instead

of from Fox News and Tucker Carlson?

Private prison company moves annual conference to Trump-owned golf resort

A private prison company has moved its annual conference to a golf resort owned by Donald Trump in an apparent bid to show its desire to align with the US President.

Until this year, the GEO Group held its conference at venues near its Boca Raton headquarters, a city on the southeastern coast of Florida.
-------------
An investigation into the company's activities found the GEO Group secured the Trump administration's first contract for a detention centre reportedly worth tens of millions of dollars a year.

This comes after the company's spending on lobbying and donations rose sharply during the 2016 election cycle, with nearly half a million dollars donated to Mr Trump's inaugural committee and to a pro-Trump super PAC, an organisation which can raise unlimited funds from individuals and corporations to support a political candidate.

Trump Meets QAnon Kook Who Believes Democrats Run Pedophile Cult

On Thursday, President Donald Trump posed for an Oval Office photo with one of the leading promoters of the QAnon conspiracy theory, which claims that top Democrats are part of a global pedophile cult.

YouTube conspiracy theorist Lionel Lebron was in the White House for an event on Thursday, according to a video Lebron posted online. During the visit, Lebron and his wife posed for a smiling picture with Trump in the Oval Office.

Lebron is one of the internet’s leading promoters of QAnon, the pro-Trump conspiracy theory based on a series of anonymous clues posted to internet forums. QAnon believers have interpreted the clues, which they claim without evidence are coming from a highly placed source in the Trump administration, to mean that Trump and the military are engaged in a high-stakes shadow war against a supposed globalist pedophile cult. The conspiracy theory has caught on with Trump supporters, who have held up QAnon-related signs and wear QAnon shirts to the president’s rallies.

Lebron claimed to have received a “special guided tour of the White House” before posing for pictures with Trump. In a video posted Friday, Lebron said he didn’t use the brief encounter with the president to ask Trump about QAnon or its slogan, “Where we go one, we go all.”

Trump is in trouble, so he's reaching for his ace in the hole: hate

This is a perilous political moment for President Trump, which means that it’s time to pay a visit to the well of resentment and hatred that got him to the White House.

This week, the president has promoted two stories — an imagined oppression of white farmers in South Africa and the murder of an Iowa woman named Mollie Tibbetts — that offer a vivid illustration of how he and the entire conservative movement use race-baiting to keep the Republican base in a state of agitation and anger, the better to take the focus away from issues that could weaken the standing of the president and his party.

-----------

The answer lies in the fact that Trump is not an outlier within the GOP. It’s not as though he dragged an unwilling party toward the use of race-baiting as a core political tactic. He’s only the most visible manifestation of a strategy that reaches back decades and today is on a constant hair-trigger. There’s a network of conservative media outlets and political figures always on the lookout for ways they can promote hate, fear and resentment among white people. When something like Tibbetts’ murder happens, they swing into action. Trump’s own involvement actually comes only after he has been alerted to the case by this network.

So on Wednesday, the morning of that rally, Axios reported that “Former Speaker Newt Gingrich emailed Axios’ Mike Allen to make sure that we’d be covering” the Tibbetts story, which was already in heavy rotation on Fox News. Gingrich — who is more responsible than any other single figure for America’s slide into vicious, bitter partisanship over the last couple of decades — explained that “If Mollie Tibbetts is a household name by October, Democrats will be in deep trouble. If we can be blocked by Manafort-Cohen, etc., then GOP could lose [the House] badly.”

Hate, fear and bigotry. That's the Republican platform.

Trump's tenure in the White House is a disappointment and a disgrace

When your strongest statement of support for a president is that “there are no charges against him,” you’ve described a presidency under siege. So it is for the reign of President Donald Trump, who came into office a whirling, undisciplined outsider and is now paying the price for his unseemly behavior.

---
There is something we can say now: Trump’s tenure in the White House is a disappointment and a disgrace. Presidents are elected to lead and achieve — to work tirelessly toward a vision of a better America. What we have with Trump is a distracted, ill-mannered figure who spends more time bashing perceived enemies on Twitter than uniting a nation that faces serious challenges at home and abroad.

The connection between Trump’s nasty streak and his potential legal jeopardy is his impetuous nature. Trump is a brash bully who sees himself as a political street fighter, a great counter-puncher, as he puts it. His pride in being a tough guy displays a recklessness that has no place in the Oval Office. The president who invited court fights by ordering an ill-considered immigration ban and insisted there were “some very fine people on both sides” of a violent white supremacy rally is now caught up in legal battles over his behavior that imperils his presidency.
