Jennifer Rubin on how unions can succeed where Senate Democrats fail:

Great article! I especially like this ending paragraph:

Unions are not an alternative to legislation, but they can be a critical supplement. The beauty of unionization is that Americans need not wait for the requisite number of Democrats to eliminate the filibuster or for Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) to stop depriving workers of new benefits. Unionization can be another form of exercising political power — even when Congress is stymied by GOP obstruction.

A local weekly beach newspaper is celebrating its 52nd Anniversary next month.

Every year it does a special edition to commemorate how long it's survived.

I saw the ad in this week's paper, and it announced how you can submit photos or short stories.

Well......So I submitted three photos. That's the limit.

I'm very fond of these photos, but the competition around here is fierce. There are many professionals and even more gifted amateurs like yours truly. I would be happy to get an Honorable Mention! That's how tough this contest is. But anyway...

Here's the three:

Christmas at the Manhattan Beach Pier

Frolicking in the surf

Seagulls at Dusk

I was recently watching Josh Groban's video of "You Raise Me Up" when I saw this photo.

I am very curious about this instrument, and wondered if any of you good people could identify it. It has a Celtic/wind instrument sound, rather like bagpipes.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

And if I'm in the wrong Group, please tell me that too, so I can put it in a more appropriate place!

Thanks in advance!

***The Winners of the July Photo Contest--"I have my eye(s) on you"***

And what a hard-fought race it was! Back and forth, over and over, till I had to declare a tie with a run-off!

And now to declare the winner in first place:

AndyS with his poignant, faintly humorous Hello Kitty!

And squeaking into second place, Grumpy Old Guy with his astonishing bird photo!

And landing in third place, alfredo with his gorgeous photo, Senorita!

Congratulations to all these winners! What a contest it has been....

Thanks to all the entrants for their wonderful photos, and thanks to all who voted and kicked!
