Many people who end their Friday or Saturday nights in a hospital emergency room have been drinking alcohol. In fact, public health experts estimate that about one-third of all injury-related ER visits involved alcohol consumption.

But what, exactly, are people drinking? What types of alcohol and even what brands? Is there a direct link between advertising and marketing and later injury?

Until now, those questions have been unanswerable, frustrating alcohol epidemiology researchers. But if results of a pilot study conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health hold up, there may soon be a way to connect the dots.

When the Hopkins researchers surveyed ER patients who’d been drinking, they found that Budweiser was the number one brand consumed, followed Steel Reserve Malt Liquor, Colt 45 malt liquor, Bud Ice (another malt liquor), Bud Light, and a discount-priced vodka called Barton’s.

These two features magically combined last month when Animal House inspiration Alpha Delta decided to throw an enormous “Bloods and Crips”-themed party. Now they’re very, very, very sorry.

Dartmouth gossip blog Dartblog just published a July 26 invitation sent by Alpha Delta’s social chairman, warning students to “choose wisely” when deciding to dress up as a member of either Los Angeles street gang. (Surprisingly, the invitation’s author grew up in suburban Massachusetts and plays golf.) Campus sorority Delta Delta Delta pitched in some party supplies, and over 200 students showed up to get schwaysted.

Alpha Delta is no sub-tier house. A month prior to the gang kegger, house alum Phil Hanlon became the 18th President of Dartmouth.

What happened to professional courtesy? We'd heard it's a dog-eat-dog world. Now we know it's also a shark-eat-shark world, thanks to scientists on a project involving the University of Delaware and Delaware State University. Last month, they were trying to recatch tagged sharks in Delaware Bay, when a bait fish helped hook a three-foot-long smooth dogfish shark, which in turn was then gobbled by a sand tiger shark. "We were trying to catch sharks that we tagged last year with internal archival tags that can detect other tagged fish around them, as well as external pop-off satellite tags that estimate the location of the shark," explained Danielle Haulsee, who's working toward her doctorate in oceanography at the University of Delaware. The dogfish shark died, but the sand tiger shark was healthy enough to tag and send back into the bay, she said.

HONOULU —Scientists are going gaga for green. It's their new favorite color.

A team of University of Hawaii and Turkish researchers have successfully produced a litter of fluorescent green rabbits, which may lead to a new way to produce medicines.

It's a medical breakthrough that has scientists "hopping" with excitement.

A herd of rabbits was born last week in Istanbul, Turkey. In normal lighting, they look just like their white rabbit siblings. But when exposed to black light, the pair of transgenic bunnies glow a bright shade of green.

"We put eight eggs, eight babies were born, two were transgenic. 25 percent efficiency. Not bad," said Dr. Stefen Moisyadi, Associate Professor at the UH Institute for Biogenesis Research.

The dangers of texting and driving are well documented but a Hamilton woman has increased those risks even further - doing both while asleep.

The woman, who suffers from a sleep condition and was taking sleeping pills, was asleep when she drove more than 300 kilometres from her Hamilton home to Auckland and then to Mt Maunganui late on Tuesday night.

Police say she was texting throughout her unconscious drive and has no recollection of the incident, which began around midnight on Tuesday.

Five hours later, her cousin found her slumped over her steering wheel in the driveway of her former home in Mt Maunganui.

The Tories and Lib Dems have given up an elderly spinster's £520,000 bequest after a row about it being split between the coalition parties.

Former nurse Joan Edwards left the cash in her will to "whichever Government is in office at the date of my death".

After some initial confusion about how to split it, the Tories pocketed £420,576 and the Lib Dems £99,423 based on their number of ministers and MPs.

But there was consternation that it was treated as a party donation instead of part of the Government's finances and could therefore have been spent on campaigning.

(STMW) – A man carrying cocaine in his car ended up calling the cops on himself Thursday night in a forest preserve near south suburban Crete, the Joliet Herald-News is reporting.

Will County Forest Preserve Lt. Tracy Phillips said an officer drove through the Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve before locking the gate for the night and didn’t see any vehicles inside.

But around 8:30 p.m., sheriff’s police said Christopher A. Pilarski, 38, had called them to ask if someone could open the gate since his blue Dodge Durango was stuck inside, according to Phillips.

“The same (forest preserve) officer went back and asked Pilarski where he had been and he admitted he was driving on the trails,” Phillips said.

Two bungling conmen who tried to pass off ice cubes as iPads were rumbled when they melted, a court heard.

Nathan Meunch, 29, and Nigel Bennett, 39, stuffed ice in a parcel then insured it for the tablets “inside”.

They planned to post it by special delivery then claim £2,500 compensation from Royal Mail when it failed to arrive at the other end.

But Post Office staff contacted investigators after the parcel started leaking.

During the trial the court heard the parcel had ‘disintegrated’ in front of shocked postal workers.

People revere Kanye West like he's the second coming. These people, it seems, also scare him. So much so that he bought two Dartz Prombron armored SUVs from Latvia. Is Yeezus scared?

For those of you who don't know, Dartz are the crazy Latvians who make the Prombron, an armored SUV based on the Mercedes G-Class. They have great options like "fake whale penis leather" and jewel encrusted snake ornaments. They were also the SUVs of choice in The Dictator.

They can retail for around $400,000, but the way Kanye has specced his "North West Protection Mobiles" come to about $1 million each. I don't think of Kanye as the sort of guy to care for others, but I'm betting that's precisely why he bought this SUV. Perhaps he realized that he is a mortal, his daughter is a mortal, and they need the protection that only Latvian armor, and not Kim Kardashian's ample derrière, can provide.

QUINCY (CBS) – A 25-year-old man is behind bars after bragging to an undercover police officer that he was a wanted man.

Transit Police say William Mavrides of Weymouth struck up a conversation with the undercover officer at Quincy Center MBTA Station on Thursday.

According to police, Mavrides was bragging about being a wanted criminal, and said he would probably end up in jail soon.

Mavrides, who in fact had outstanding warrants for Witness Intimidation, Larceny and Assault & Battery, was arrested and taken to jail.
