BONNE TERRE, MO (KTVI) – Convicted killer David Zink was put to death by the state of Missouri Tuesday night.

“He was an evil man,” said Sheriff Jim Arnott, Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

Zink was convicted of the 2001 abduction, rape and murder of 19-year-old Amanda Morton. He was on parole for rape when was involved in a fender bender with the victim. Zink told investigators he killed Morton because he was drinking and driving, and feared going back to prison.

National Gummy Worm
Day Gummi worms are one of the most popular gummi candies, originally created by a German company called ‘Trolli’ in 1981. Celebrate Gummi Worm Day with a packet of your favourite type of gummi worms! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/gummi-worm-day/

National Pet Fire Safety Day The combined efforts of the Kennel Club and ADT Security Services led to the first Pet Fire Safety Day being held in the late 2000s. The idea behind the event is to make pet owners aware of the hazards their beloved cat, dog, or other animal could pose in the home with regard to fire. Many fires are caused by pets, especially when they are left alone in a property and the intention is that by highlighting the dangers to owners it can help in preventing them.

Pet owners should take advantage of the day to discuss who in a home is responsible for helping a pet escape in the event of a blaze and carry out some practice escape drills. They can also use Kennel Club advice to pet proof their home against fires and install a pet alert notice in a window for use by emergency services. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pet-fire-safety-day/

Tapioca Pudding Day Tapioca Pudding Day could well be the day to redeem the nightmares of school puddings and rediscover the delights of tapioca when the mysterious grey sludge is actually done properly.

Luckily, modern cooks and recipe-book writers have exerted a bit more imagination on the question of how best to use the cassava root flour, so you’ll be able to find many more appealing variations on the old classic.

Start with tapioca flour, or pearls or even whole root. Try it with cream, milk or coconut milk. Mix in spices, fruit or citrus juices. Layer it with chocolate or jam or tasty syrups. Make it thin and runny, or chunky and firm. Try whipping in an egg or two. Explore variants from every continent. There are even savoury puddings, if you don’t have such a sweet tooth.

Then be thankful it’s just once a year. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tapioca-pudding-day/

Bastille Day Bastille Day is the name given in English-speaking countries to the French National Day, which is celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is formally called La Fête nationale (French pronunciation: [la fɛːt nasjɔˈnal]; The National Celebration) and commonly Le quatorze juillet (French pronunciation: [lə.katɔʁz.ʒɥiˈjɛ]; the fourteenth of July).

The French National Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789,[1][2] as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790. Celebrations are held throughout France. The oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe is held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in front of the President of the Republic, along with other French officials and foreign guests.[3][4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastille_Day

Pandemonium Day Chaos, madness and unexpected surprises abound on Pandemonium Day, when nothing can be predicted and everything can go wrong. Embrace the pandemonium, and do something crazy! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pandemonium-day/

Shark Awareness Day Contrary to expectations, the purpose of Shark Awareness Day is not to stand on the beach and shout out warnings to terrified swimmers and surfers, despite the hours of innocent fun that can provide.

It’s true that sharks are impressive hunters and predators, yet the sad fact remains that these magnificent creatures are more threatened by people than we are by sharks. The worldwide demand for shark-fin soup, shark-tooth medallions, and a false sense of security on beaches everywhere, all combine to leave sharks persecuted and endangered, with millions of them being killed each year.

Like top predators in any ecosystem, sharks play an essential role in keeping the seas healthy and productive. Whilst no-one is suggesting we go out and hug a Great White on Shark Awareness Day, it’s the least we can do to respect these wonderful creatures and let them be. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/shark-awareness-day/

The Bernie Store

Just received my coffee cups ordered in late May. They are very nice and I am more than pleased. Turnaround time was not as fast as I would have liked (I wanted them to materialize when i placed the order), but certainly more than acceptable.

National Pecan Pie Day National Pecan Pie Day is observed annually on July 12th. The delicious pecan pie is made primarily with corn syrup, pecan nuts, salt and vanilla flavoring with some variations including sugar syrup and molasses or maple syrup. Chocolate and bourbon whiskey may also be added to the pie recipe and is a popular addition in some areas. Pecan pie is often served with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Pecan pie is considered a specialty of Southern U.S. cuisine.

The attempts that have been made to trace this dish’s origin have not found any recipes dated earlier than 1897, even though there are claims made of the pie existing in the early 1800′s in Louisiana. Well known cookbooks such as Fannie Farmer and The Joy of Cooking did not include this dessert until 1940.

Pecan pie was significantly popularized by the makers of Karo syrup. Their company has claimed that the pie was a “discovery”, in the 1930′s, by a corporate sales executive’s wife, as a “new use for corn syrup”. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Simplicity Day Author, naturalist, philosopher, historian, tax resister, abolitionist, development critic, surveyor, and leading transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12, 1817. National Simplicity Day is observed on July 12th in his honor. Thoreau was an advocate for living a life of simplicity.

Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) is well-known, by many, for his book “Walden”, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. He asserted that: “ as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex”. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Rainier Cherries Day In 1952 at Washington State University, Harold Fogle created a new cherry by cross-breeding the Bing and Van cherry varieties. This new cherry was named after Mount Rainier. Now, each year on July 11th, National Rainier Cherry Day is observed.

Due to their superior taste, Rainiers are considered a premium cherry.

As part of it’s Tree-to-Table program, on July 11, in honor of National Rainier Cherry Day, the Northwest Cherry Growers have hand-picked one restaurant in each state that will take part in their program in which each of the 50 restaurants will be dishing up at least one signature menu item featuring fresh cherries from the Northwest highlighting delicious Rainier cherries. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Piña Colada Day The Pina Colada has a long and noble history, both as a mixological standard, and as the heart of a song about not giving up on love, just because you think it’s gotten stale. The name for the drink comes from the basis of its creation, Piña meaning “Pineapple” and Colada meaning “Strained.” This drink is a delicious mix of all the things that speak to the Caribbean and tropical locales, with the pineapple juice mixed together with a rich coconut cream, spiked up with just a bit of white rum into the mix. Is there anything that speaks more of warm white sand beaches and beautiful azure skies than a drink that was born on those same shores? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pina-colada-day/

Don't Step On A Bee Day Don’t Step On A Bee Day is an important reminder that the fate of the common bee lies in the balance – with bee numbers in some countries having halved in the last decade with no apparent cause, it’s vital that we take care to maintain bee populations, pollination and honey production. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/dont-step-on-a-bee-day/

Oklahoma Wal-Mart manager arrested in $75,000 heist

BRISTOW, Okla. • A Wal-Mart manager and his daughter were arrested Wednesday in connection with an investigation into a theft at a northeastern Oklahoma Wal-Mart store in which a man disguised as an armored truck driver walked out with more than $75,000.

Bristow police detective Kevin Webster said the man and his daughter were taken into custody, but he would not say how they are believed to be connected to the theft. No charges have been filed.

A spokesperson for Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Authorities said the suspect entered the Wal-Mart store in Bristow about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, walked to the cash office, signed for the deposit and walked out of the store. He drove away in a dark four-door Chevrolet.

Peabody Energy asks a judge to strike lyrics of protest song from federal lawsuit

CHEYENNE, Wyo. • Peabody Energy Corp. wants a judge to strike lyrics of a strip-mining protest song from a federal lawsuit filed by environmental activists who claim they were jailed for demonstrating at a company shareholders meeting.

The activists, Thomas Asprey and Leslie Glustrom, sued Peabody, the Northern Wyoming Community College District and a college district police officer. They claim campus police jailed them on the company's orders during the 2013 shareholders meeting in Gillette.

Peabody has asked a federal judge not only to dismiss the case but to strike lyrics of the 1971 John Prine song, "Paradise," which criticized Peabody's mining practices in Kentucky, from their complaint. Peabody says the lyrics tarnish its name.

The refrain in "Paradise" cites Peabody's role in strip mining Muhlenberg County in western Kentucky.
