New York Times reporter Mark Mazzetti e-mailed an advance, unpublished copy of a Maureen Dowd column dealing with the CIA to an Agency spokeswoman last year, according to newly released emails obtained by Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act. Depending on whom at the Times you ask, that was either "much ado about nothing" or a "mistake that is not consistent with New York Times standards."
The emails were released to Judicial Watch as part of a FOIA lawsuit the group brought seeking information about the Agency's cooperation with filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, who are working on a film about the assassination of Osama bin Laden. They show that last August, Mazzetti, who covers national security for the Times, sent CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf a Maureen Dowd column the paper was about to publish critiquing the White House's attempt to spin the raid with the admonition, "this didn't come from me...and please delete after you read." Earlier, Harf had emailed Mazzetti asking "any word?" Mazzetti had replied, "Going to see a version before it gets filed. My sense is there is a very brief mention at the very bottom of column about CIA ceremony, but that Boal also got high level access at the Pentagon."
Indeed, the column reported that Boal had been invited to a CIA ceremony honoring the SEALs. The exchange was obviously an effort on Harf's part to gather intelligence about what the Times was going to report. And if Mazzetti did indeed send Harf a version he saw "before it [got] filed," that means the CIA read Dowd's column before her own editors did. Mazzetti declined to comment for the record.
As far as Times managing editor Dean Baquet is concerned, this sort of cozy information-sharing (for which Wall Street Journal reporter and elephant-fucker Gina Chon was nominally fired in June) is no big deal at all. "I know the circumstances, and if you knew everything that's going on, you'd know it's much ado about nothing," Baquet told Politico's Dylan Byers. "I can't go into in detail. But I'm confident after talking to Mark that it's much ado about nothing. The optics aren't what they look like."

A woman was filmed frantically swerving to avoid fellow drivers after her accelerator allegedly became stuck down on a US highway.
Lori Ubelstad barreled down the interstate highway in Missouri last Sunday at speeds of up to 190km/h, zigzagging through traffic, weaving through a construction zone and careening down the motorway's grassy median strip just to avoid a catastrophic smash.
Ms Ubelstad called 911 to explain her predicament and soon State Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to catch up with the runaway 2011 Kia Sorrento and clear other vehicles from its path.
She said she tried everything to stop her car — slamming on the brakes, turning off the engine, applying the emergency brake, shifting out of drive — but none of it worked.
The state troopers captured some of the high-adrenaline incident on their dashboard cameras.
"Every [steering wheel] correction is more subtle when you are going over 100 mph [160km/h] and for her to drop down in a grass median filled with holes and come back up was amazing," said Sgt. Sheldon Lyon of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, adding that she performed that stunt at least eight times.
After a 35-minute ordeal covering 95km, Ms Ubelstad was able to stop her car by following the troopers' directions to lift up the accelerator while applying the brake.
"She put herself in life-and-death situations several times," said Lyon.
"I feel sorry for her, but she did an outstanding job of controlling that vehicle in difficult circumstances. She overcame so many obstacles."

- Far from promoting democratic initiatives or retaliation against 911 perpetrators-enablers, I believe that just as the war in Iraq was a pretext toward gaining access to oil, I likewise think that our war in Afghanistan is a pretext toward gaining access to their rare earth deposits. Ironically both oil and rare earths are more necessary to those who seek to make war, than those who seek to wage peace.

The toll keeps rising. By the time this issue of Newsweek went to press, members and civilian employees of Afghanistan's security forces had killed no fewer than 40 coalition troops this year-at least 10 of the dead, all of them Americans, in the first three weeks of August alone. The count has already passed last year's total of 35 dead, and it's reached fully double the figure for all of 2010. But as worried as U.S. commanders are by the growing number of insider attacks-"green-on-blue killings," they're sometimes called-Major Hasanzada (as he asks us to call him) says the trend doesn't surprise him. "I understand why our men are shooting U.S. and NATO soldiers," the Afghan National Army officer tells Newsweek. "I too have been personally hurt by the way American forces behave towards my soldiers, our villagers, our religion and culture. Too many of them are racist, arrogant, and simply don't respect us."
Those festering resentments are becoming a serious threat to America's withdrawal plans. A problem that emerged as a few isolated violent incidents in 2005 is now undermining the trust that's essential if allied forces hope to prepare the Afghans to shoulder their country's security responsibilities by the 2014 withdrawal deadline. In the past year or so, coalition troops have been working more closely than ever with Afghan troops. In fact, some U.S. commanders partly blame the rising frequency of insider attacks on this closer partnership between coalition and Afghan forces on the ground.
But these days the partnership is strained. The Americans and other coalition members are busy watching their backs, just in case some disgruntled Afghan recruit decides to avenge some insult, whether imagined or real. The threat is anything but imaginary. Several of the men under Major Hasanzada's command have told him that they too have thought about shooting their foreign trainers and counterparts, he says: "One soldier told me, 'In my heart I want to empty my bullets into their chests.' He has not done anything yet, but we are watching him carefully."
The trouble is that the estrangement is feeding on itself. A 48-year-old Afghan Army colonel confirms that the once cordial relations between Afghan and U.S. troops, both on the frontlines and in the barracks, have deteriorated badly in the past year. A veteran soldier who served under the communist-run government in the 1980s and early 1990s, he says the Americans have worsened the divide recently by shunning the Afghans, largely for fear of insider attacks. "We had a very good understanding with each other for years, but in the past year the Americans seem reluctant to deal with us," he tells Newsweek. (Since he is not authorized to speak to the press, he asks that we not disclose his location or his unit's designation.) "Our social relations and professional cooperation are getting worse," he says.

What was super-cute was after the financial collapse of 08 the ability to 'defer' management and incentive fees (instead of taking cash today and paying tax on them today, they will take a portion of the profits and then 'defer' payment of said fees, plus profits, until some time in the future and paying the taxes then) was made illegal. SOOOO...the super smart hedge and private equity funds created mini-masters, essentially circumventing the new rules and taking the fees as an allocation, taxable as cap gains instead of the traditional income. This is why regulating the financial markets half-assed does not work. You either have to go all in, or let asswipes like Romney do this shit they way they want.
However, Internal Revenue Code Section 457A, adopted as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, disallows such fee deferrals and requires hedge fund managers to take all existing deferrals into income by 2017. Mexico Shooting: Federal Cops Open Fire At U.S. Embassy Vehicle

MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities are trying to sort out why a U.S. Embassy vehicle was ambushed by federal police on a rural back road in mountains south of the capital, leaving two U.S. government workers wounded. Officials from both nations said federal officers were chasing criminals Friday morning when a hail of bullets was fired at the embassy sport utility vehicle carrying the two employees and a Mexican Navy captain.
Federal police earlier said men in four vehicles had fired at the embassy SUV, and a Mexican Attorney General's Office spokesman confirmed Saturday that all were federal police units. He could not be named because he was not authorized to speak on the record.
The official said that Mexico's top police official, Public Security Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna, went to the site of the shooting, indicating the sensitivity and tension over a situation that involved an attack not only on U.S. officials, but on Mexican Navy personnel as well.
The U.S. Embassy took nearly 12 hours to issue a statement Friday, but described the incident as an "ambush." U.S. officials did not identify the wounded employees or their assignments or agencies, saying only that they were heading to a military training base south of Mexico City and traveling with a Mexican naval captain, who was not seriously injured. The Mexican official said 12 police officers had been detained.
