Nick Hanauer: Beware, fellow plutocrats, the pitchforks are coming

TED * Published on Aug 12, 2014

Nick Hanauer is a rich guy, an unrepentant capitalist — and he has something to say to his fellow plutocrats: Wake up! Growing inequality is about to push our societies into conditions resembling pre-revolutionary France. Hear his argument about why a dramatic increase in minimum wage could grow the middle class, deliver economic prosperity ... and prevent a revolution.

Food Fight: ‘Latin America will not bow to EU pressure, will tighten ties with Russia’

RT * Published on Aug 12, 2014

The EU is reportedly planning to put pressure on Latin America to stop it from boosting its agricultural exports to Russia. In response to sanctions, Moscow imposed a food embargo on a range of EU products, and countries like Brazil and Chile are being canvassed to step in and fill the gap. For more on this RT is joined by Robert Oulds, head of the Bruges Group think-tank.

So if you're scoring at home:

The EU not only:

(1) screws their own farmers but they want to;

(2) starve the Russians while;

(3) simultaneously restraining the right of international trade by Latin America; and

(4) demand a continuation of providing them cheap Russian natural gas so they're all warm and cozy this winter while the Russians are eating their cold, cold turnips.

I think that covers the main points.

RT * Published on Aug 11, 2014

Embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki refuses to step down as the country's President names a new Premier. Anti-war activist Brian Becker says Washington has turned its back on Maliki because he no longer serves U.S. interests in Iraq.

Michael Brown Shooting Once Again Exposes Racist Media

breakingtheset * Published on Aug 11, 2014

Manuel Rapalo reports on the shooting of 18 year old St. Louis resident, Michael Brown, highlighting the disproportionate violence against blacks in the America, as well as the race-baiting by the news media that helps perpetuate a cycle of police violence.

“Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. ”

“This blind defense of Israeli brutality towards the Palestinians is betrayal of the memory of all those killed in other genocides in other times. The lesson of the Holocaust is not that Jews are special. It is not that Jews are unique. It is not that Jews are eternal victims. The lesson of the Holocaust is that when you have the capacity to halt genocide, and you do not, no matter who carries out that genocide or who it is directed against, you are culpable. ”

Why Almost No Scientists Are Republican

The Young Turks * Published on Aug 10, 2014

"A large majority of the public (76%) and nearly all scientists (97%) say that it is appropriate for scientists to become actively involved in political debates on controversial issues such as stem cell research and nuclear power.

Among the public, substantial majorities of Democrats (80%), independents (76%) and Republicans (75%) say it is appropriate for scientists to take an active political role on such issues. While older Americans (those older than 50) and less educated people are somewhat more likely to see scientists’ political involvement as inappropriate, majorities in all major demographic and political groups find this appropriate.

Most Americans do not see scientists as a group as particularly liberal or conservative. Nearly two-thirds of Americans (64%) say they think of scientists as “neither in particular”; 20% see them as politically liberal and 9% say they are politically conservative." The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Food for Thought: US students struggle with hunger as tuition skyrockets

RT * Published on Aug 10, 2014

Skyrocketing tuition fees in America are now forcing many students to struggle to find any food for thought. So some universities are now setting up soup kitchens, to make sure their pupils can make it through the day.

- For those who're so inclined toward questioning RT's veracity on this subject, go find a college student and listen to their stomach, because I doubt you'll hear about it on the MSM......
