DNA study seeks origin of Appalachia's Melungeons

My note: This is an extremely interesting article and shows how DNA testing has solved so many old mysteries.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — For years, varied and sometimes wild claims have been made about the origins of a group of dark-skinned Appalachian residents once known derisively as the Melungeons. Some speculated they were descended from Portuguese explorers, or perhaps from Turkish slaves or Gypsies.

Now a new DNA study in the Journal of Genetic Genealogy attempts to separate truth from oral tradition and wishful thinking. The study found the truth to be somewhat less exotic: Genetic evidence shows that the families historically called Melungeons are the offspring of sub-Saharan African men and white women of northern or central European origin.

And that report, which was published in April in the peer-reviewed journal, doesn't sit comfortably with some people who claim Melungeon ancestry.

<snip>

"All of us are multiracial," he said. "It is recapturing a more authentic U.S. history."

Estes and her fellow researchers theorize that the various Melungeon lines may have sprung from the unions of black and white indentured servants living in Virginia in the mid-1600s, before slavery.

They conclude that as laws were put in place to penalize the mixing of races, the various family groups could only intermarry with each other, even migrating together from Virginia through the Carolinas before settling primarily in the mountains of East Tennessee.

Rinse Preakness says Obama is in love with the man in the mirror. He and Wolfie

are having a CNN repub fest and rinse is stating what the romney campaign will be going for. Seems our President has not lived up to all of the promises he made and rinse says that's what they want to bring home to the American people. Of course Wolfie is right there with him, helping him with any promises rinse may have left out. Rinse says the President loves the sound of his own voice and the empty words that come out...sigh. I went to CNN to avoid Dylan, might have to re-think that.

"He was brilliant and charming." These were the words of an attendee to one of the

two fundraisers held last evening in Boca Raton. Romney was feted by approximately 250 people at the first funder, I believe $2,500 to get in the door, invitation only and $10,000 to have your photo taken with him. The second party was given by someone affiliated with Exxon Mobil, also a pricey event. The woman who said he was brilliant and charming was not on camera but also stated she had no doubt he would be in the White House as our next President.

Romney was most likely brilliant and charming, these were his "people." Ultra wealthy, older and white. The local CBS did the coverage...Secret Service surrounded him and the convoy of silver-gray SUVs made quite the entrance in the gated community where the events were held. I see no schedule that includes his speaking to we mere mortals, the middle-class, seniors. This woman is typical of the republican thinking. He's handsome, white, charming and just what we want a President to "look" like. She couldn't have made it any clearer. I doubt she is concerned with his views on foreign policy, unemployment, jobs, etc. He looks right...I did not sleep well last night.

Where is Mika this morning? I tuned in late and assumed she was on a break from the

camera. Joe had announced she would be doing her Op-Ed things we should read but she is not on set. Anybody?

Reminder: "American Experience" Clinton. PBS at 8 pm EST. This causes me a

problem as both NCIS shows have their conclusions for the season on tonight. I can catch AE again at 2:00 a.m. Anyone with me?..LOL.

NBC Anchor a Keynote Speaker at Conservative Fundraiser

<snip>

Elder statesman of the NBC News Department Tom Brokaw has a very specific notion of how the people in the news division should comport themselves. He was so unhappy with what he perceived as the degradation of NBC News' objectivity that he demanded that Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews not be allowed to do any more live coverage of election events in 2008, actually offering himself up as a diplomatic liaison to the McCain campaign, smarting from some Olbermann barbs. Later, he played a key role in seeing that MSNBC rid themselves of Olbermann once and for all (not that Olbermann's actions endeared him to the NBC/MSNBC suits).

Oddly enough, Brokaw seems to have little issue with his Nightly News replacement spoofing the NBC News department on 30 Rock or participating in a Black Eyed Peas lipdub. That doesn't detract from the gravitas of the position at all.

The rest of the article and the video is at Crooks & Liars. How strange no words from Brokaw about this..LOL

Howard Kurtz: Tamron Hall Was Wrong To Cut Tim Carney's Mic During On Air Clash

CNN host and Newsweek/The Daily Beast columnist Howard Kurtz laid into MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall for cutting off a guest's mic on her Friday show.

Hall asked guest Tim Carney to weigh in on the report of GOP candidate Mitt Romney's bullying incidents in prep school. Before answering the question, Carney charged that Hall and her colleagues in the media were hyping up the story. That set Hall off. After smacking him down for a minute, she cut off his mic. "You're not gonna come on and insult me," she said to Carney.

After replaying the clip, Kurtz defended Carney, saying that all he did was "challenge her coverage of the report on Mitt Romney." Kurtz added, "It was Tamron Hall who was being insulting by silencing him."

Kurtz believed that it was "perfectly acceptable" for Carney to state that in his opinion, the story was being hyped up by the media. "Does Hall only want guests that agree with her handling of every story?" Kurtz wondered.

If you want to see a video of Kurtz, and who wouldn't????...LOL. Anyway, here's the link:

Allen West Compares Riding His Motorcycle To 'Touching My Wife'

Do you want to know how nutty Allen West is?????

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) spent part of Mother's Day weekend talking about motorcycles -- and how if someone went for a ride on his bike, it would be like that person was "touching [his] wife."

West was talking about his plans to ride his motorcycle to the Republican convention in Tampa this summer when, during an interview with a California radio show, the host asked West if he could take a ride on West's Honda VTX 1800R retro.

"That would be like touching my wife," West said, according to a report in Sun-Sentinel, a South Florida newspaper.

When the radio show host said it wouldn't be quite the same thing, West doubled down.

"Yes," he said. "It would be."

A request for clarification by West's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

Is anyone thinking or going to buy any shares of Facebook when it becomes

public on Friday? I believe it opens at around $35. Just curious, was thinking about putting a few bucks there for a while and see how it plays out.

Joey Scar's panties in a wad early this morning. The new Obama campaign ad has hit

home and hard re Bain Capital. It is a tough and to the point ad with former workers and they tell the story of how Bain, under Romney, came in and dumped the company. Employees lost their jobs, etc. Joey is just so outraged that the campaign would select this story for an ad against Romney. It's capitalism and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and on and on. The ad is spot on, very powerful and made Joey very upset. I liked it very much.
