monmouth's JournalCharlie Crist does surrogate duty for Obama, rips Romney on tax plan and ‘binders full of women’
Former Gov. Charlie Crist, a potential Republican vice presidential pick in 2008 who criticized Barack Obama as a surrogate for GOP nominee John McCain, returned to surrogate duty this afternoon but this time for Obama.
Crist, who became an independent in 2010 and endorsed Obama in August, appeared on a Democratic conference call to bracket upcoming visits to Florida by Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan.
As Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan come to our own state all they have to offer are empty promises and failed policies, Crist said.
Echoing Obamas stump speeches, Crist accused Romney of backing a deficit-busting $5 trillion tax cut for the wealthy and an unnecessary $2 trillion hike in defense spending.

SS will receive a 1.7 increase in benefits
WASHINGTON (AP) More than 56 million Americans on Social Security will get raises averaging $19 a month come January, one of the smallest hikes since automatic adjustments for inflation were adopted in 1975, the government announced Tuesday.
Much of the 1.7 percent increase in benefits could get wiped out by higher Medicare premiums, which are deducted from Social Security payments.
At the same time, about 10 million working people who make more than $110,100 will be hit with a tax increase next year because more of their wages will be subjected to Social Security taxes.
The cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, on payments is tied to a government measure of inflation released Tuesday. It confirms that inflation has been relatively low over the past year, despite the recent surge in gasoline prices.

Update: A Chinese Flag Flying in Freeport, Illinois?
This was found on Crooks & Liars: Update: This is a statement directly from the now unemployed Sensata workers in Illinois:
"There seems to be some confusion about whether or not our Sensata plant took down our American flag and replaced it with the Chinese flag. Here is the truth. Sensata took down our American flag on the day they flew in our Chinese replacements that we were forced to train. They put our American flag back up after the Chinese workers left. They never flew the Chinese flag."

With elections office closed, Supervisor Bucher taking last-minute voter applications outside
The line for day-before-last voter registrations is a dozen people deep outside the county elections office on Military Trail but with the office closed for Columbus Day, Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher is taking the applications by herself, at a table outside the locked doors.
Tomorrow is the last day for voters to register for the Nov. 6. general election.
Bucher said that there were employees on hand this morning inside the election headquarters, at the corner of Military Trail and Gun Club Road, but only for poll-worker training that was scheduled for today. But when she got there at 9 a.m., she said, people were outside, pounding on the doors, wanting to come in and register.
She dropped everything and set up a table outside and began taking registrations. Hundreds of people have come by, she said. I just couldnt leave them out there.

8-Year-Old Big Bird Fan To Mitt Romney: 'You Find Something Else To Cut Off!'
Eight-year-old Alabama resident Cecelia Crawford wasn't happy during the debate on Wednesday night when Mitt Romney said he would stop government funding for PBS.
On Thursday morning, she was still angry, so she wrote Romney a letter, sent along to The Huffington Post by her mother. Crawford wrote that she is a fan of "Sesame Street" and that it was her "favorite show on earth" when she was younger. "When I grow up I'm going to get married and I want my kids to watch it so do not cut it off," Crawford wrote. "You find something else to cut off!"
Romney told PBS host Jim Lehrer, who moderated the presidential debate, that he would stop the subsidy to Lehrer's network. "Im sorry, Jim, Im gonna stop the subsidy to PBS ... I like PBS, I love Big Bird -- I actually like you, too -- but I am not going to keep spending money on things [we have] to borrow money from China to pay for," Romney said.
Crawford's mother mailed the letter on Thursday to Romney's campaign headquarters.

Here's to WKOW in Madison. The best live stream I've seen in a long time. The camera work
and audio was wonderful. I loved watching SS with the President along that greeting line. Each time he reached in to touch a hand their eyes and heads went down looking, just looking, doing their job. I was very pleased to see their seriousness with their jobs. Ryan must have choked when he saw that crowd. It was awesome and thanks to the DUer who posted that link..
Perhaps we witnessed the "Setup" like in the film, "The Sting"
I was initially very disappointed in the President's lack of response to Romney. However, after reading many of the comments I am wondering if this may not be the President's plan. Let's face it, Romney lied so much, and the President let him do it...Romney is now boxed in, those lies are out there and after the "Setup" comes the "Sting." Tonight's lies could come back to really hurt Romney. I'm just speculating of course, but I am confident in the smarts of this President and his advisors.
