The song was sung during a recent party hosted at the Glendale Elks Lodge by a retired LAPD officer, police said.
Video of the party and singing was first sent to TMZ.
If investigators find that any current officers attended "and misconduct took place, a formal investigation will be opened,” said Jane Kim, a spokeswoman for the LAPD.
Some of the changed lyrics to the song released by Jim Croce in 1973 include:

Throughout Havana, gas-guzzling, steel “Yank tanks” from the 1950s and early 1960s still run — though many Cubans said Friday they wouldn’t complain if new American cars returned to the market after a 54-year hiatus.
Xiomara Valdez’s rickety red ride from 1960 sat on a jack near the center of Havana while a mechanic replaced the brakes. Yet again.
“I don’t like it because I always have to fix it!” said Valdez, 45. “The Studebaker is very, very bad ... It’s always a problem.”
Indeed, she said it’s been problem that’s been passed down in her family for more than five decades.
Nearby, Francisco Medina, 46, proudly declared that his 4-year-old son, Franki de Jesus, will one day inherit his blue 1952 Ford Sedan. The gift will unfortunately come with seemingly weekly repairs.
“It’s a lot of work to maintain a car like this. We have to repair everything,” he said.

This Google Car Is Worth Hundreds Of Millions But Looks Like It Cost $2,000
Google officially became a car company in 2014 and just in time to catch the waning days of the year, the tech colossus revealed the first prototype of its driverless vehicle.
In roughly the decade since Google began to develop self-driving cars, the company has spent what's likely hundred of millions if not billions on the project, when you take into account all factors.
Those include engineers, equipment, the cost of buying a fleet of regular cars, and the cost of building roadworthy versions of the steering-wheel-less, pedal-less "podmobiles" it introduced this year.
And in all seriousness, I think this is exactly what we'll all be tooling around in — in a few decades, actually sooner than anyone thinks.
That said, the Google Car doesn't look like much. And course we knew we weren't getting a Italian supercar or even a Tesla Model S. That just isn't the way Google does things.

It was a huge pain in the ass for those days. It was the rainy season, and I wound up walking to work, adding another six miles or so a day to my imaginary pedometer. It was my own fault that I’d been towed, really, and I spent more than a couple hours ruing myself. I finally made it to payday, and when I went to get the truck, they told me that I now owed over a thousand dollars, nearly triple my paycheck. They charged a couple hundred dollars a day in storage fees. I explained that I didn’t have that kind of money, couldn’t even get it. They told me that I had some few months to get it together, including the storage for however long it took me to get it back, or that they’d simply sell it. I was working two jobs at the time. Both were part time. Neither paid a hundred bucks a day, much less two.
I wound up losing my jobs. So did my husband. We couldn’t get from point A to point B quickly enough, and we showed up to work, late, either soaked to the skin or sweating like pigs one too many times. And with no work, we wound up losing our apartment.
It’s amazing what things that are absolute crises for me are simple annoyances for people with money. Anything can make you lose your apartment, because any unexpected problem that pops up, like they do, can set off that Rube Goldberg device.

The Kansas City Police Department in Missouri is apologizing after posting tweets that targeted the transgender community this weekend.
The police department held a "tweet-along," the social media version of a ride-along, Friday night. The tweets gave their 58,000-plus followers a glimpse into the jobs and minds of department employees.
The officers stopped to talk to a female "possible prostitute" on Independence Avenue Friday night, according to Twitter. They asked her why she became a sex worker and suggested she instead try working at a nearby Sonic fast-food restaurant, which had a help wanted sign in the window.
The officers soon realized the woman was not what they had expected.
"Wait. That prostitute was, in fact, a man. Not doing anything against the law at present so they let him/her go," a tweet read.

Riverside County animal services officials made the match when they scanned a stray, black dog for an implanted microchip and found she was listed as an 8-month-old reddish-brown pit bull adopted in October from a San Jacinto shelter.
'She actually recognized me when I went in there to verify it was her,' owner Heather Lowery told NBC Los Angeles.
'She shakes her whole body as if she were Pluto basically, and she did it again today. She jumped right on (me) and took pictures with me.'

The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will soon take action against the seat-hogging people of the subway system, according to reports from AM New York.
In January, the MTA will unveil an entirely new public service campaign aimed at preserving space on its already packed trains.
