Prisons that withhold menstrual pads humiliate women and violate basic rights

That should not lead anyone to think that sanitary products are easy to come by in jail. At York, each cell, which houses two female inmates, receives five pads per week to split. I’m not sure what they expect us to do with the fifth but this comes out to 10 total for each woman, allowing for only one change a day in an average five-day monthly cycle. The lack of sanitary supplies is so bad in women’s prisons that I have seen pads fly right out of an inmate’s pants: prison maxi pads don’t have wings and they have only average adhesive so, when a woman wears the same pad for several days because she can’t find a fresh one, that pad often fails to stick to her underwear and the pad falls out. It’s disgusting but it’s true.

____
Connecticut is not alone in being cheap with its supplies for women. Inmates in Michigan filed suit last December alleging that pads and tampons are so scarce that their civil rights have been violated. One woman bled through her uniform and was required to dress herself in her soiled jumpsuit after stripping for a search.

The reasons for keeping supplies for women in prison limited are not purely financial. Even though keeping inmates clean would seem to be in the prison’s self-interest, prisons control their wards by keeping sanitation just out of reach. Stains on clothes seep into self-esteem and serve as an indelible reminder of one’s powerlessness in prison. Asking for something you need crystallizes the power differential between inmates and guards; the officer can either meet your need or he can refuse you, and there’s little you can do to influence his choice.

-----

There are ways to restore dignity to America’s inmates. For example, we could remove the entire sanitary supply problem if American prisons bought the newly-released Thinx for female inmates, which are super absorbent, stain-free underwear designed by a woman’s start-up. Thinx are expensive – $200 for seven pair – but they still might be cost effective when you factor in the cost of buying disposable pads and the time and energy devoted to the pad power struggle in women’s prisons. But I doubt that corrections systems in the United States will give up the forced scarcity of menstrual products in prison.

Children Band Together to Stop the Cops from Hauling an Innocent Elderly Woman Off to Jail

Thursday, the Free Thought Project reported the story of 75-year-old Gerry Suttle, who had a warrant out for her arrest because her grass was not within the arbitrary confines of the state’s regulations.

Suttle, who never had so much as a speeding ticket, was shocked when she found out that she was a wanted fugitive. But she showed no fear, stating that if they wanted her, they could come and get her.

Suttle was unsure of how she was going to mow her lawn being that she is physically unable to do so. However, after getting word of her predicament, several heroic children from the neighborhood decided to help her out.

Four brothers, who were looking to spend some of their summer vacation helping people, saw Gerry Suttle’s story on a local news stat

Video Shows Arkansas Cops Slamming Cooperative Blind, Black Man to the Ground, catches their lies on

http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/video-shows-arkansas-cops-slamming-cooperative-blind-black-man-ground

legally blind Little Rock, Arkansas man who can be seen on video complying with police officers is asking why the officers roughly threw him to the ground in a June 1 incident, resulting in a back injury, local station Fox 16 reports.

In a police report obtained by Fox 16, one of the officers claims that Eric Wilson “pulled away violently causing me to lose grip,” and he was “afraid that Wilson would strike myself or my partner with the handcuff.”i

But video of the incident shows nothing of the sort.

Wilson, who told reporters he can only see shadows, can be seen walking toward the two police officers when they summon him. When they tell him to take his hands out of his pockets, he does so. The video shows Wilson standing quietly with his hands behind his back as the officer goes to handcuff him. The officer then suddenly pushes Wilson to the ground.

Police reported seeing a black handle sticking out of Wilson’s pocket. That turned out to be a clock designed to read the time for blind people.

cops turn off cameras during pot shop raid. miss one. taste the product and mock disabled

During a police raid on an unpermitted medical marijuana dispensary late last month, members of the Santa Ana Police Department were caught on film committing a number of highly questionable actions, reports KTLA-TV.

Not to be outdone by Texas Police’s barrel-rolling hijinx at a teenage pool party earlier in June, members of Santa Ana’s finest were filmed berating a disabled patient, playing darts, and even munching on the shop’s selection of marijuana-laced edibles.

The incident occurred at a dispensary called Sky High Holistic, where surveillance cameras caught the officers sharing the shop’s edibles with each other while discussing the flavors. One officer is consistently playing darts throughout the investigation, while at another point a female officer mocks a disabled patient involved in the raid.

“I was about to kick her in her f—ing nub,” the officer later says of a customer with an amputated leg in a wheelchair.

The video was edited and released to news outlets by attorney Matthew Pappas, who plans to file a lawsuit on behalf of Marla James — the patient with the amputated leg — by alleging gross misconduct on behalf of the officers during the raid.

When I lost my hands making flatscreens I can't afford, nobody would help me

Immediately, I started to worry about my children. I have six children at home, who were between the ages of 9 and 17 during the accident, and I am both mother and father to them. How would I take care of them now?

Working six days a week, I made 5,200 pesos a month ($400). Without my hands, I knew I wouldn’t even be able to make that much.

After five days in the hospital, I checked myself out. But I didn’t go home first. I went directly to the factory where I worked for HD Electronics. I asked to see the manager. He offered me 50,000 pesos ($3,800).

“I’ve lost both my hands,” I said. “How will my family survive on 50,000 pesos?”

“That’s our offer,” he said. “Stop making such a big scandal about it and take it.” I eventually got about $14,400 in settlement money under Mexican labor law, an amount equal to 75% of two years’ wages for each hand. But I knew I had to do better for my family. So I looked across the border, to Texas, where my former employer is based.

Zimbabweans start exchanging national currency into dollars next week: $1 for 35 quadrillion

Zimbabweans will start exchanging 'quadrillions' of local dollars for a few U.S. dollars next week, as President Robert Mugabe's government discards its virtually worthless national currency, the central bank said on Thursday.

The southern African country started using foreign currencies like the U.S. dollar and South African rand in 2009 after the Zimbabwean dollar was ruined by hyper-inflation, which hit 500 billion percent in 2008.

At the height of Zimbabwe's economic crisis in 2008, Zimbabweans had to carry plastic bags bulging with bank notes to buy basic goods

Bank accounts with balances of up to 175 quadrillion Zimbabwean dollars will be paid $5. Those with balances above 175 quadrillion dollars will be paid at an exchange rate of $1 to 35 quadrillion Zimbabwean dollars.
